Book excerpt: A hard-hitting memoir, Divorce by Deployment: "My story, My tragedy, My victory" recounts the marital strife between author Percell Artis Jr. and his first wife and how the marriage failed, partly due to his frequent military deployments. Artis met his first wife in 1989, and they married in 1990. For the first few years they enjoyed a happy life, and after four years they had a son. But when Artis went on his first deployment to Kosovo, things started unraveling-fast. Their communication began breaking down, and by the eighth year their marriage was in jeopardy. Artis's wife met another man, moved out of their house, and told Artis she didn't want to be with him. Then she dropped the real bombshell: She was pregnant with her boyfriend's baby. Thinking that matters could not get any worse, Artis then discovered that she had had a one-night-stand with another man who could possibly be the father of the child. Facing this shocking news and being deployed at the same time was one of the toughest times Artis had ever experienced. Divorce by Deployment tells how he overcame his personal obstacles and patiently rebuilt his life.

Download or read book Dartmouth Veterans written by Phillip C. Schaefer and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are tales of what it was like for young men to go from the bucolic hills of New Hampshire to a land wracked by war and violence. The result is a collection of more than fifty accounts, showing the variety of experiences and reactions to this dramatic period in American history. Some soldiers were drafted, some volunteered; some supported the war, but many turned against it. Common to all the stories is the way in which war changes men, for good and ill, and the way in which the Vietnam experience colored so much of the rest of these writers' lives.

Download or read book Confessions of a Military Wife written by Mollie Gross and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book will have you laughing so hard you cry . . . As Confessions aptly demonstrates, military spouses lead interesting lives.” —Tara E. Crooks, cofounder of Army Wife Network As the wife of a Marine Corps officer, Mollie Gross learned the hard way to laugh instead of cry at what she could not control—and as she quickly discovered, nearly everything was out of her control. A standup comedienne, Mollie explores everything about the “issued” spouse, from deployment and the stress of having a husband in a combat zone, to the realization that marriage changes when your husband returns home from war. Nothing is taboo or out-of-bounds in this funny, poignant memoir, including the “parties” military wives throw for themselves before hubby returns. (You’ll have to read the book to find out about those.) “Mollie Gross is the Chelsea Handler of the milspouse community. She’s unfiltered, honest, and hilarious, with an underlying message to stop whining and be proud. Think of it as heartfelt humor for the home front.” — Military Spouse magazine “Mollie’s no-holds-barred account of what it was like during her first four years of being married to a Marine, dealing with the moves, wartime deployments, and life on the home front, will leave you laughing, crying, and shaking your head in disbelief asking, ‘Did she really just say that!?’” — Kristine Schellhaas, founder of USMC Life

Download or read book Marriage and the British Army in the Long Eighteenth Century written by Jennine Hurl-Eamon and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Girl I Left Behind Me addresses a neglected aspect of the history of the Hanoverian army. From 1685 to the beginning of the Victorian era, army administration attempted to discourage marriage among men in almost all ranks. It fostered a misogynist culture of the bachelor soldier who trifled with feminine hearts and avoided responsibility and commitment. The army's policy was unsuccessful in preventing military marriage. By concentrating on the many soldiers' wives who were unable to win permission to live "on the strength" of the regiment (entitled to half-rations) and travel with their husbands, this title explores the phenomenon of soldiers who persisted in defying the army's anti-marriage initiatives. Using evidence gathered from ballads, novels, court and parish records, letters, memoirs, and War Office papers, Jennine Hurl-Eamon shows that both soldiers and their wives exerted continual pressure on the state through evocative appeals to officers and civilians, fuelled by wives' pride in performing their own military "duty" at home. Respectable, companionate couples of all ranks reflect a subculture within the army that recognized the value in Enlightenment femininity. Looking at military marriages within the telescoping contexts of the state, their regimental and civilian communities, and the couples themselves, The Girl I Left Behind Me reveals the range of masculinities beneath the uniform, the positive influence of wives and sweethearts on soldiers' performance of their duties, and the surprising resilience of partnerships severed by war and army anti-marriage policies.
