Book John Ashbery and You

Download or read book John Ashbery and You written by John Emil Vincent and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Ashbery and You approaches Ashbery’s critically neglected recent poetry with an ear to his use of the supremely elastic pronoun “you” and an eye toward his construction of his books as books. Together, these devices produce effects new to Ashbery’s oeuvre and offer readers new ways “in” to his work. John Ashbery and You argues that starting with April Galleons (1987), and reaching an apex in Your Name Here (2000), the poet has been paying increasingly keen and affectionate attention to his readers. Vincent tracks these techniques but above all offers his readers tools to reapproach a dauntingly difficult body of work. Some critics have suggested that Ashbery is producing books too quickly for criticism to keep up or that the later books represent, as Vincent summarizes it, “a kind of logorrhea . . . and therefore don’t really register as separate events as much as episodic eruptions of one big volcano which is the Later Ashbery.” Vincent contends that critics are not keeping up with Ashbery not so much because it is all of a piece, but rather because his work varies so much from volume to volume. Each of the volumes from the latter part of Ashbery’s career represents an individual and different poetic project, depending precisely on the unit of the book to produce its effects. By showing us that the entry point to Ashbery is not any given individual poem within a volume, but the entire volume, Vincent gives us a new and productive approach to reading the recent work of one of our most challenging poets.

Book Pagan Time

Download or read book Pagan Time written by Micah Perks and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With little more than a run–down Jeep and their newborn baby in tow, author Micah Perks' parents set out in 1963 to build a school and a utopian community in the mountains. The school would become known as a place to send teens with drug addictions and emotional problems, children with whom Micah and her sister would grow up. This complex memoir mixes a moving celebration of the utopian spirit and its desire for community and freedom with a lacerating critique of the consequences of those desires — especially for the children involved. How could the campaign for a perfect home and family create such confusion and destruction? The '60s, for many, became a laboratory of hope and chaos, as young idealists tested the limits of possibility. Micah Perks has cast her unflinching and precise eye on her own history and has illuminated not only those years of her childhood, but a wide–open moment that marked our culture for all time.

Book The Global Culture of Bullying

Download or read book The Global Culture of Bullying written by Carol L. Castleberry and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explicates “bullying” as a concept and as a social and cultural phenomenon that has become a defining reality of the times in which we live. The author begins in the arena where it is first, and most acutely individually, experienced—in school—and expands to other institutions and areas of social life—the family, the workplace, and the local, national, and international spheres, extending the concept of bullying to the global arena to uncover the social and institutional root causes of the extreme forms of bullying such as trafficking, torture, terrorism, and genocide. The book discusses the steps taken to address these issues and analyzes their efficacy. It explores the concept of epigenetics, brain development, childhood experiences, and other psychological factors that contribute to bullying behaviors and predispositions. The book investigates and compares anti-bullying and anti-violence initiatives taken particularly in the U.S, the U.K., and India to address the issue and create community-wide resilience practices. It also describes the current trends in decisions from international, regional, and domestic law, and offers evidence-based policy recommendations to establish a culture of respect for human dignity. An interdisciplinary, intercultural exploration, and analysis of the phenomenon of bullying, this book will be of interest to students, teachers, and researchers of psychology, sociology, anthropology, social justice and law, human rights, and cultural studies. It will also be useful for academic libraries, academicians, policy planners, school administration, government officials, and readers interested in reading about bullying.

Book EMDR and The Art of Psychotherapy With Children

Download or read book EMDR and The Art of Psychotherapy With Children written by Carolyn Settle, MSW, LCSW and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008-06-16 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...[This book contains] invaluable material for the child therapist with varied theoretical backgrounds to more confidently apply EMDR to children." -- Frances Klaff, for Journal of EMDR Practice and Research, Volume 3, Number 3, 2009 In this book the authors present an overview of how therapists can get started in conceptualizing psychotherapy with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) methodology through Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) theory. The focus of the book is to teach therapists to effectively use the entire EMDR protocol with young children. The first chapter provides a comprehensive overview of how to get started with EMDR after completing basic training. The book continues with chapters that detail the basic skills in using EMDR with children and then transitions to more advanced skills in using EMDR with children with specific diagnosis and presenting issues. They follow with a chapter summarizing the published evidence to date supporting the practice of EMDR with children. Data is then incorporated into a chapter summarizing their research on EMDR with young children in order to provide evidence of therapists' ability to adhere to the EMDR protocol with children, and to document their research findings about training therapists to use EMDR with children. Finally, they conclude the book with goals for the future of EMDR with children while encouraging therapists to consider conducting research in order to compel the practice of EMDR with children into the mainstream of child psychotherapy. It is a major task of the book to inspire therapists to begin thinking about conducting research and how important research is to therapists in order to validate and advance the practice of psychotherapy. In the end, the most significant goal of this book is to provide best practice for children who are in need of expert psychotherapy in order to change the trajectory of their lives. The hope is to provide guidance and support to therapists in order to launch them in their practice of EMDR. This is the art of treating children with EMDR.

Book excerpt: Your journey toward a life of yes begins as you open the pages of this powerful book. How we view God affects our whole world—including our view of ourselves. Many see God as The Great Restrictor, saying no to our every move. But the God of the Bible is a God of yes, empowering us with confidence, hope, and expectancy. Speaking with boldness and clarity to the post-modern generation, David Edward reveals the God of yes as he explores subjects like the four agreements God has made with humankind: God's agreement with Adam—to remove sin; God's agreement with Abraham—to release blessings; God's agreement with David—to reign with authority; God's agreement with Jeremiah—to redeem nations. Are you ready to look past the static religiosity of our day and peer deeply into the God of yes to find a life that truly works? The choice is yours.
