Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Friedman was robbed of his adolescence by the monstrous evil that annihilated millions of European Jews and changed forever the lives of those who survived. When the Nazis overran their home town near the Polish-Ukrainian border, the Friedman family was saved by Ukrainian Christians who had worked at their farm. Henry, his mother, his younger brother, and a young schoolteacher—who had been hired by his father when Jews were forbidden to attend school—were hidden in a loft over the animal stalls at a neighbor’s farm; his father hid in another hayloft half a mile away. When the family was liberated by the Russians after eighteen months in hiding, Henry, at age fifteen, was emaciated and too weak to walk. The Friedmans eventually made their way to a displaced persons camp in Austria where Henry learned quickly to wheel and deal, seducing women of various ages and nationalities and mastering the intricacies of dealing in the black market. In I’m No Hero, he confronts with unblinking honesty the pain, the shame, and the bizarre comedy of his passage to adulthood. The family came to Seattle in 1949, where Henry Friedman has made his home ever since. In 1988 he returned with his wife to Brody and Suchowola, where he succeeded in finding Julia Symchuk, who, as a young girl, had warned his father that the Gestapo was looking for him, and whose family had hidden the Friedmans in their loft. The following year he was able to bring Julia to Seattle for a triumphal visit, where she was honored in many ways, although, as Friedman writes, “in her own country she had never been honored with anything except hard work.” Like many other survivors, Henry Friedman has found it difficult to confront his past. Like others, too, he has felt the obligation to bear witness. Now retired, he devotes much of his time to telling his story, which he believes is a message of hope, to thousands of schoolchildren throughout the Pacific Northwest. He has received national recognition for his role in establishing the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and as a founder of the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating her family history helps a teenager heal after a brutal attack. Olivia, 17, becomes the victim of a rape by someone she knows on her way home from school. Unwilling to face her classmates, she turns to her extended family while she heals, listening to stones about their journeys from Poland in the late 19th century. Her grandmother's story touches her deeply. She hears about Albert and Sara, who leave for America just one step ahead of revenue agents; Peter and Ursula, who dream of a land without oppression; and Francis and Anna, who emigrate rather than endure rule by the Russians, even though Anna was forced to travel alone. Listening to their stories brings strength to Olivia, who learns of their courage in creating new lives. Set in the 1960s, the novel also highlights the history of Poland in the 1800s, when it existed mainly in the minds of its people because the country did not exist from 1795 to 1918. Without a homeland to call their own, immigrants to the United States had to claim Germany, Russia or Austria as their native country, and more than a million did so in that timeframe. Like Olivia's ancestors, they found community in neighborhoods and Roman Catholic churches that spoke their language and followed Polish customs. Journey to Polonia echoes the author's own family history of immigrants and will resonate with anyone who has taken a chance on a better way of life.

Book excerpt: 1,260 Days is a journey to a foreign land, a detour called a shortcut in a cab. It's riding on a night train in a warm sweat as you hear the choo choo chuggen down the tracks. It's a vision in a restless dream, a nightmare with a bloody scene, a demon putting thoughts into your head. 1,260 Days is about the man in black. It's about a work shift. It's about a suicidal note. It's the unheard music. It's a forty-day fast. It's a severed artery. It's an itchy rash. 1,260 Days is a holy book. It's a trumpet being blown upon a hill. It's a paradox. It's a riddle. It's a jest. It's hope. It's change. It's woe. It's greed. It's me. It's you. It's them. It's us. 1,260 Days is about the end of the world. "I found myself alternately astounded, intrigued, and ultimately jealous of Enoch, whose adventures on a daily basis made my own life seem small and mundane by comparison." Rich Marotta, KFI Radio Inducted 2011, Southern California Sportscasters Hall of Fame "Brilliant 'manure'vres of narrative wreaking havoc upon accepted norms." Tortelvis of Dread Zeppelin "An honest and straightforward book, one man's experiment with disgrace takes on an aura of supernaturally experienced grace. Easy on the ear and steering clear of massaging his own story-telling of an awfully curious humanity, Conte gives a read hell-bent on making us experience the nit and grit of rubbing up against the taboos binding human pleasure." Scott Hartstein, Author of Adagia

Book excerpt: A panoramic and epic novel in the grand romantic style, Push Not the River is the rich story of Poland in the late 1700s--a time of heartache and turmoil as the country's once peaceful people are being torn apart by neighboring countries and divided loyalties. It is then, at the young and vulnerable age of seventeen, when Lady Anna Maria Berezowska loses both of her parents and must leave the only home she has ever known. With Empress Catherine's Russian armies streaming in to take their spoils, Anna is quickly thrust into a world of love and hate, loyalty and deceit, patriotism and treason, life and death. Even kind Aunt Stella, Anna's new guardian who soon comes to personify Poland's courage and spirit, can't protect Anna from the uncertain future of the country. Anna, a child no longer, turns to love and comfort in the form of Jan, a brave patriot and architect of democracy, unaware that her beautiful and enigmatic cousin Zofia has already set her sights on the handsome young fighter. Thus Anna walks unwittingly into Zofia's jealous wrath and darkly sinister intentions. Forced to survive several tragic events, many of them orchestrated by the crafty Zofia, a strengthened Anna begins to learn to place herself in the way of destiny--for love and for country. Heeding the proud spirit of her late father, Anna becomes a major player in the fight against the countries who come to partion her beloved Poland. Push Not the River is based on the true eighteenth century diary of Anna Maria Berezowska, a Polish countess who lived through the rise and fall of the historic Third of May Constitution. Vivid, romantic, and thrillingly paced, it paints the emotional and unforgettable story of the metamorphosis of a nation--and of a proud and resilient young woman.

Nearly fifty years later, the couple’s granddaughter, Beata, repeats this journey, seeking a new life in the fairy-tale city of her grandmother’s stories.
