Book Elections in Australia Ireland and Malta under the Single Transferable Vote

Download or read book Elections in Australia Ireland and Malta under the Single Transferable Vote written by Shaun Bowler and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-06-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Single Transferable Vote, or STV, is often seen in very positive terms by electoral reformers, yet relatively little is known about its actual workings beyond one or two specific settings. This book gathers leading experts on STV from around the world to discuss the examples they know best, and represents the first systematic cross-national study of STV. Furthermore, the contributors collectively build an understanding of electoral systems as institutions embedded within a wider social and political context, and begins to explain the gap between analytical models and the actual practice of elections in Australia, Ireland, and Malta. Rather than seeing electoral institutions in purely mechanical terms, the collection of essays in this volume shows that the effects of electoral system may be contingent rather than automatic. On the basis of solid empirical evidence, the volume argues that the same political system can, in fact, have quite different effects under different conditions. Contributors to the volume are Shaun Bowler, David Farrell, Michael Gallagher, Bernard Grofman, Wolfgang Hirczy, Colin Hughes, J. Paul Johnston, Michael Laver, Malcom Mackerras, Michael Maley, Michael Marsh, Ian McAllister, and Ben Reilly. Shaun Bowler is Professor of Political Science, University of California, Riverside. Bernard Grofman is Professor of Political Science, University of California, Irvine.

Book The Constitution of Australia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cheryl Saunders
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2010-11-30
  • ISBN : 1847317405
  • Pages : 185 pages

Download or read book The Constitution of Australia written by Cheryl Saunders and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consistently with the aims of the series, the book canvasses the Australian constitutional system in a way that explains its form and operation, provides a critical evaluation of it and conveys a sense of the contemporary national debate. The chapters deal with the foundations of Australian constitutionalism, its history from the time of European settlement, the nature of the Australian Constitutions, the framework for judicial review, the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government, federalism and multi-level government and rights protection. Running through all chapters is the story of the gradual evolution of Australian constitutionalism within the lean but almost unchanging framework of the formal, written, national Constitution. A second theme traces the way in which the present, distinctive, constitutional arrangements in Australia emerged from creative tension between the British and United States constitutional traditions on which the Australian Constitution originally drew and which continues to manifest itself in various ways. One of these, which is likely to be of particular interest, is Australian reliance on institutional arrangements for the purpose of the protection of rights. The book is written in a clear and accessible style for readers in both Australia and countries around the world. Each chapter is followed by additional references to enable particular issues to be pursued further by readers who seek to do so. 'The Constitution of Australia' has already been cited in a High Court of Australia case: Momcilovic v The Queen [2011] HCA 34 (8 September 2011)

Book FIDIC Contracts in Asia Pacific

Download or read book FIDIC Contracts in Asia Pacific written by Donald Charrett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FIDIC contracts are the most widely used contracts for international construction around the world and are used in many different jurisdictions, both common law and civil law. For any construction project, the General Conditions of Contract published by FIDIC need to be supplemented by Particular Conditions that specify the specific requirements of that project subject to the relevant laws. FIDIC Contracts in Asia Pacific provides readers with detailed guidance and resources for the preparation of the Particular Conditions that will comply with the requirements of the applicable laws for a number of the jurisdictions in which FIDIC contracts are used. The laws that apply to the governing law of the contract, construction works and dispute resolution in each jurisdiction are identified. This book offers chapters on the FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Underground Works, and the perspective of a bilateral aid agency on the use of FIDIC contracts. Each jurisdiction features an outline of its construction industry and information on the impact of Covid-19 on both the execution of construction projects and the operation of construction contracts. This book is essential reading for construction professionals, lawyers and students of construction law using FIDIC contracts.

Book The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia

Download or read book The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia written by Nicholas Aroney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia examines the body of constitutional jurisprudence in an original and rigorous yet accessible way. It begins by exploring the historical and intellectual context of ideas surrounding the Constitution's inception, and closely examines its text, structure, principles and purposes in that light. The book then unpacks and critically analyses the High Court's interpretation of the Constitution in a manner that follows the Constitution's own logic and method of organisation. Each topic is defined through detailed reference to the existing case law, which is set out historically to facilitate an appreciation of the progressive development of constitutional doctrine since the Constitution came into force in 1901. The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia provides an engaging and distinctive treatment of this fundamental area of law. It is an excellent book for anyone seeking to understand the significance and interpretation of the Constitution.

Book Tettigoniidae of Australia Volume 3

Download or read book Tettigoniidae of Australia Volume 3 written by David Rentz and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2001-08-03 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the series will assist with identification and study of this important genus. Specialised collecting techniques, and the rearing of immature specimens, have yielded many more species than would otherwise have been recorded using only normal collecting techniques. The work accounts for four subfamilies, two of which, the Tympanophorinae and Microtettigoniinae, are endemic to Australia. Each of these endemic subfamilies is represented by a single genus containing several species. Tettigonidae of Australia Volume 3 will be a valuable resource for orthoptera researchers and academics, general entomologists, as well as those with an interest in the ecology and conservation issues related to grasshoppers.
