Book Love and Other Sins

Download or read book Love and Other Sins written by Emilia Ares and published by Sera Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mina's life is going according to plan; she's acing AP Calc and is perfectly content with her nonexistent social life. Though only a high school junior, Mina knows time is an investment, and she's putting all her capital into academics. Oliver, a child abuse survivor who grew up in the foster care system, is ready to burn down his old life and start from scratch-complete with a new name and emancipation papers-in L.A. When the two are thrown together through circumstance and develop an unexpected connection, they discover how hard it is to keep the past in the past. Love and Other Sins is an emotional coming-of-age YA drama about family, love, violence, and the residue of abuse set against the backdrop of contemporary Los Angeles. When Mina meets Oliver, you'll remember your own first love and just how fast it swept you under. What were the bonds that bound us? Was it purely physical attraction? Circumstance? Or perhaps it was a mutual gravitation toward inevitable pain. "There was something about her-her eyes. Well, not so much her eyes, physically, but more like what they said about her: she had this look-a kind of restless intensity." "It was intimate . . . a strange and beautiful feeling. We were breathing life into each other." Love and Other Sins is a moving story about what it means to be young and vulnerable in today's society. This young adult romance will make you laugh and cry and give you hope for tomorrow because there are people like Mina and Oliver who refuse to let themselves be defined by their pasts or circumstances. If you love reading books like Looking for Alaska or Thirteen Reasons Why, then this is definitely for you. Content warning: sexual assault, recollections of child abuse, discussions of suicidal thoughts, and mention of miscarriage.

Book Soul of the Stone

Download or read book Soul of the Stone written by Sharina Harris and published by Entangled: Teen. This book was released on 2024-10-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slay like no one is watching...in the jaw-dropping, vamp-enemies-to-lovers sequel to Sign of the Slayer There are things I love about being a slayer. Being faster and stronger than everyone else? Love it. Taking down a bunch of evil bloodsuckers before they feed on the innocent? That’s my vibe. Working with the American Slayer Society and creating weapons out of thin air? Here for all of it. But there are some things I didn’t sign up for, and they’re becoming increasingly harder to deal with. People making my life miserable, vampire treachery, heavy-as-all-hell responsibilities I didn’t ask for...all the pressure is growing. Exponentially. I didn’t ask for any of it. Not the black-out rage that’s consuming my closest relationships. Not the lies fed to me by those I trusted—and even my own family. And definitely not the voices from the stone that follow me wherever I go. Guiding me. Taunting me. Haunting me. Because there’s big work to do, and the greatest—and oldest—threat to humanity is now alive, kicking, and thirsty as hell. None of us are safe. And the only person who can help me is the one whose kiss can ignite my soul...or shatter it to a thousand slayer pieces. Catching feelings is one thing. But following him into the underworld to save the world? That’s an even more terrifying problem. The American Slayer Society series is best enjoyed in order. Reading Order: Book #1 Sign of the Slayer Book #2 Soul of the Stone

Book My Own Blood

Download or read book My Own Blood written by Ashley Bristowe and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mothering under normal circumstances takes all you have to give. But what happens when your child is disabled, and sacrificing all you've got and more is the only hope for a decent future? Full of rage and resilience, duty and love, Ashley Bristowe delivers a mother's voice like no other we've heard. When their second child, Alexander, is diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, doctors tell Ashley Bristowe and her husband that the boy won't walk, or even talk--that he is profoundly disabled. Stunned and reeling, Ashley researches a disorder so new it's just been named--Kleefstra Syndrome--and she finds little hope and a maze of obstacles. Then she comes across the US-based "Institutes," which have been working to improve the lives of brain-injured children for decades. Recruiting volunteers, organizing therapy, juggling a million tests and appointments, even fundraising as the family falls deep into debt, Ashley devotes years of 24/7 effort to running an impossibly rigorous diet and therapy programme for their son with the hope of saving his life, and her own. The ending is happy: he will never be a "normal" boy, but Alexander talks, he walks, he swims, he plays the piano (badly) and he goes to school. This victory isn't clean and it's far from pretty; the personal toll on Ashley is devastating. "It takes a village," people say, but too much of their village is uncomfortable with her son's difference, the therapy regimen's demands and the family's bottomless need. The health and provincial services bureaucracy set them a maddening set of hoops to jump through, showing how disabled children and their families languish because of criminally low expectations about what can be done to help. My Own Blood is an uplifting story, but it never shies away from the devastating impact of a baby that science couldn't predict and medicine couldn't help. It's the story of a woman who lost everything she'd once been--a professional, an optimist, a joker, a capable adult--in sacrifice to her son. An honest account of a woman's life turned upside down.

Book excerpt: Winner PEN Translates Award (UK) Recovering from an unspecified accident, the narrator of Loop finds herself in waiting rooms of different kinds: airport departure lounges, doctors’ surgeries, and above all at home, awaiting the return of her boyfriend, who has travelled to Spain following the death of his mother. Loop is a love story told from the perspective of a contemporary Penelope who, instead of weaving and unravelling her shroud, writes and erases her thoughts in her ‘ideal’ notebook. At once, funny and thought-provoking, her thoughts range from her stationery preferences to the different scales on which life is lived, while a cast of unlikely characters cross the page, from Proust to a mysterious dwarf, from a dreamy cat to David Bowie singing ‘Wild is the Wind’. Written in an assured, irreverent style, Loop is the journal of an absence, one in which the most minute or whimsical observations open up universes. Combining aphoristic fragments with introspective narrative, and evoking Italo Calvino and Fernando Pessoa in its playfulness and wry humour, this original reflection on relationships, solitude and the purpose of writing offers a glimpse of contemporary life in Mexico City, while asking what it really means to find our place in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 Bestseller - British Horror, Amazon.com A haunting novel set in the North Yorkshire Moors about isolation, superstition and persecution. Thores-Cross follows the stories of Emma, a present day writer, and Jennet, an eighteenth century witch. Emma Moorcroft is still grieving after a late miscarriage and moves to her dream house at Thruscross Reservoir with her husband, Dave. Both Emma and Dave hope that moving into their new home signifies a fresh start, but life is not that simple. Emma has nightmares about the reservoir and the drowned village that lies beneath the water, and is further disturbed by the sound of church bells - from a church that no longer exists. Jennet is fifteen and lives in the isolated community of Thores-Cross, where life revolves about the sheep on which they depend. Following the sudden loss of both her parents, she is seduced by the local wool merchant, Richard Ramsgill. She becomes pregnant and is shunned not only by Ramsgill, but by the entire village. Lonely and embittered, Jennet's problems escalate, leading to tragic consequences which continue to have an effect through the centuries. Emma becomes fixated on Jennet, neglecting herself, her beloved dogs and her husband to the point where her marriage may not survive. As Jennet and Emma's lives become further entwined, Emma's obsession deepens and she realises that the curse Jennet inflicted on the Ramsgill family over two hundred years ago is still claiming lives. Emma is the only one who can stop Jennet killing again, but will her efforts be enough? 'The writing is near flawless. Your voice is crisp and natural, carrying the reader into lives of the characters and the world you have created seamlessly.' - Lauren Grey, author of 'Threads of Time'. 'I love your historicals. They feel so real. I can already tell this one is excellent. The back and forth between Emma's modern life and Jennet's 18th century life is tantalizing.' - Laura Emmons, author of 'Seeing Magic' and 'Healing Hands'. '...a wonderful piece of writing.' - Lin Churchill, author of 'Pride'. 'Overall I can see this attracting readers of both contemporary and historical fiction. It seems that it will gravitate around characters and relationships so perhaps it may have more appeal to women. It was a pleasure to read, Karen and it's setting up the connection between past and present very well' - Lesa Clarke, author of 'The Glass House'. 'Wow, I've never been into ghost stories before, but this is great!' - Lesley Taylor, author of 'Heart-Brother' and 'Changeling'. 'Startling but extremely accurate use of language . . . Very emotive and skilfully handled . . . I found your writing fluid and accurate but more importantly, completely enthralling.' - R.M.A., author of 'The Snow Lily'. 'This is terrific.' - Chris Bostic, author of 'Game Changer' and 'Fugitives From Northwoods' 'As always, your writing is impressive and so is your knowledge of boats. You have clearly taken the time to research the area, the herbs and other various concepts within your book, and it shows and makes the story that much stronger throughout. I really enjoyed this book, truly, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it. Well done.'- Claire C Riley, author of 'Limerence' 'I love the way you handle your characters and the way you blend them into the book from the word go but in such a clever way... There is a really nice narrative here coupled with a brilliant flow and pace to it. You have done well and I like this a lot.' - Sean Connolly, author of. British Army on the Rampage. (B.A.O.R) 'Very well crafted... a fantastic read' - Annabel Watkinson, author of 'The Year of Us' 'This is an excellent example of the timeslip genre. Both Jennet's and Emma's voices are realistic and representative of the two different timeframes.' - Lynne Jones author of The Bon Ton Club

Book Social Functions of Literature

Download or read book Social Functions of Literature written by Paul Debreczeny and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the effect of literature on readers, both as individuals and as members of social groups, focuses on Russia's national poet, Alexander Pushkin, as a model for investigating the aesthetic and social functions of literature. The individual reader's response to the literary text is demonstrated in Part One through a broad range of memoirs, diaries, and correspondences in which Russian readers recorded their reactions to Pushkin. Among the reactions are testimonies that Pushkin's works helped readers form their personalities, provided cathartic relief in times of stress, and aided them in releasing their suppressed emotions. In his analysis, the author draws on various psychological approaches, from studies of perception through developmental psychology to psychoanalysis. Part Two exposes the extent to which individuals' aesthetic responses are conditioned by their social environment. Against the backdrop of Russian social history in the early nineteenth century, the author describes the dissemination of new aesthetic norms, notably the relations of the Russian literary elite to "lowbrow" and "middlebrow" groups. In this context, he analyzes a number of Pushkin imitations (with Pushkin's responses to them) and links Nikolai Gogol's development as a writer to the social groups surrounding Pushkin. Among the other topics discussed are the popularization of Pushkin on the stage and his inclusion in school textbooks and anthologies. The aura surrounding the personality of an author is the subject of Part Three, in which the author shows how Pushkin's death in a duel with a foreigner contributed to his emergence as a symbol of the Russian nation, and how deep-seated anxiety about national identity gave rise to the Pushkin myth and to the canonization of the poet as martyr. The author also describes how the combined effect of the widespread reading of Pushkin's work and his legend as martyr allowed him to remain Russia's main mythic figure despite the Soviet Union's attempts to supplant him with Lenin. Throughout the book, theoretical arguments are buttressed by close readings of Pushkin's works, especially The Prisoner of the Caucasus, Eugene Onegin, Poltava, Egyptian Nights, and several lyric poems.
