Download or read book An Archive of Skin An Archive of Kin written by Adria L. Imada and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the longest and harshest medical quarantine in modern history, and how did people survive it? In Hawaiʻi beginning in 1866, men, women, and children suspected of having leprosy were removed from their families. Most were sentenced over the next century to lifelong exile at an isolated settlement. Thousands of photographs taken of their skin provided forceful, if conflicting, evidence of disease and disability for colonial health agents. And yet among these exiled people, a competing knowledge system of kinship and collectivity emerged during their incarceration. This book shows how they pieced together their own intimate archives of care and companionship through unanticipated adaptations of photography.

Download or read book Perhaps the Stars written by Ada Palmer and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 2017 John W. Campbell Award Winner for Best Writer, Ada Palmer's Perhaps the Stars is the final book of the Hugo Award-shortlisted Terra Ignota series. World Peace turns into global civil war. In the future, the leaders of Hive nations—nations without fixed location—clandestinely committed nefarious deeds in order to maintain an outward semblance of utopian stability. But the facade could only last so long. The comforts of effortless global travel and worldwide abundance may have tempered humanity's darkest inclinations, but conflict remains deeply rooted in the human psyche. All it needed was a catalyst, in form of special little boy to ignite half a millennium of repressed chaos. Now, war spreads throughout the globe, splintering old alliances and awakening sleeping enmities. All transportation systems are in ruins, causing the tyranny of distance to fracture a long-united Earth and threaten to obliterate everything the Hive system built. With the arch-criminal Mycroft nowhere to be found, his successor, Ninth Anonymous, must not only chronicle the discord of war, but attempt to restore order in a world spiraling closer to irreparable ruin. The fate of a broken society hangs in the balance. Is the key to salvation to remain Earth-bound or, perhaps, to start anew throughout the far reaches of the stars? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing has always been an inseparable part of me. At first it didnt seem necessary or important to share with others. Then we bought our first PC and have been on the Internet about three years. Since then sharing has blossomed into unbelievable proportions. It is a thrill to be able to share with others. Hopes dreams and things we all wish for, such as acceptance by fellow writers. I can not think of one single thing that inspires me to write poetry. The entire spectrum of living is an inspiration. I feel extremely passionate about life with all its complexities. Ive always thrown myself head long into every project I tackle. Intensity serves me well by capturing the moment, fresh and captivating. The results get me into to trouble at times in that I loose all concept of time. Here I bow to my husband and his patience for many late dinners when in the middle of a writing frenzy. Endless miracles of love spur me on! It sets Ada thinking about the thrills of young love lost, and the hundred or so pounds gained since her college days, and she decides it's high time to change her body, and her life. So she starts laying down some rules. The first rule is: Don't Keep Doing What You've Always Been Doing. And so begins her unforgettable journey on the way to less weight and more love...For anyone who has ever found themselves at a crossroads, with one hand in their pocket and the other in the cookie jar, Ada's Rules is a warm, funny and soulfully wise novel about falling back in love with the life you have.
