Book Words and Images on the Screen

Download or read book Words and Images on the Screen written by Ágnes Pethő and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The screen has never been merely a canvas for the images to be displayed but also – to quote Jean-Luc Godard – “a blank page”, a surface for inscriptions and a “stage” for all kinds of linguistic occurrences be their audible or visual. Word did not come into the world of cinema at the time of the talkies but has been a primordial medial “companion” that has shaped the cinematic experience from its very beginnings. This volume offers a collection of essays that question the role of words and images in the context of moving pictures covering a wide area of their interconnectedness. How can we analyse literary adaptations? What is the role of adaptations in the evolution of specific national cinemas? In what way are written texts used in films? Is the model of the word and image relations used in silent films still applicable today? What major paradigms can be discerned within the multiplicity of ways Jean-Luc Godard’s cinema plays with words and images? Are these models of modernist or postmodern cinema reflected in films of other directors like R. W. Fassbinder? How do avant-garde works deal with the word and image debate? What are the connections of animation or computer games with verbal text and narrative? What is the phenomenon of jet-setting and how does it connect to the ideological implications of the relations between the culture of books and films? What happens when Hamlet is completely rewritten reflecting the ideology of late capitalism? What happens from the point of view of literariness or rejection of literariness when films are made vehicles of national propaganda? How do words get mediated through images? These are some of the questions addressed in the present volume by in-depth case studies of cinematic intermediality or more general surveys regarding cinema’s long lasting liaisons with language or literature.

Book excerpt: A pulse-pounding psychological thriller based on the popular Dutch tradition of blindfolding and dropping teens and pre-teens in the middle of a forest — and what happens when it goes horribly wrong. Twelve-year old Karin is blindfolded and dropped into the Hoge Veluwe National Forest with three other children. With nothing but a few basic supplies and emergency food, the children are tasked with working together to navigate one of the Netherlands' most beautiful and wild locations and return to where their families are anxiously waiting. Karin quickly finds herself at odds with two of the older teens, and suddenly looks up to see that the other children have vanished. As Karin struggles against the elements to find her way back, she soon realizes that something far more sinister lurks in the woods. Grace, Karin’s mother and an American married to a Dutch husband, has been nervous about this practice from the start. At first she tells herself the space is good for her daughter, but as the hours begin to tick by and the children fail to arrive at their designated campsite, she becomes certain something has gone horribly wrong. As Karin fights for survival, and Grace hastens to find her daughter, the night culminates in the reveal of a deadly secret—and a shocking confrontation—that will push each of them to her edge.

Book Photography and Collaboration

Download or read book Photography and Collaboration written by Daniel Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-14 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography and Collaboration offers a fresh perspective on existing debates in art photography and on the act of photography in general. Unlike conventional accounts that celebrate individual photographers and their personal visions, this book investigates the idea that authorship in photography is often more complex and multiple than we imagine – involving not only various forms of partnership between photographers, but also an astonishing array of relationships with photographed subjects and viewers. Thematic chapters explore the increasing prevalence of collaborative approaches to photography among a broad range of international artists – from conceptual practices in the 1960s to the most recent digital manifestations. Positioning contemporary work in a broader historical and theoretical context, the book reveals that collaboration is an overlooked but essential dimension of the medium’s development and potential.

Book Privacy and Data Protection Issues of Biometric Applications

Download or read book Privacy and Data Protection Issues of Biometric Applications written by Els J. Kindt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 988 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses all critical privacy and data protection aspects of biometric systems from a legal perspective. It contains a systematic and complete analysis of the many issues raised by these systems based on examples worldwide and provides several recommendations for a transnational regulatory framework. An appropriate legal framework is in most countries not yet in place. Biometric systems use facial images, fingerprints, iris and/or voice in an automated way to identify or to verify (identity) claims of persons. The treatise which has an interdisciplinary approach starts with explaining the functioning of biometric systems in general terms for non-specialists. It continues with a description of the legal nature of biometric data and makes a comparison with DNA and biological material and the regulation thereof. After describing the risks, the work further reviews the opinions of data protection authorities in relation to biometric systems and current and future (EU) law. A detailed legal comparative analysis is made of the situation in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. The author concludes with an evaluation of the proportionality principle and the application of data protection law to biometric data processing operations, mainly in the private sector. Pleading for more safeguards in legislation, the author makes several suggestions for a regulatory framework aiming at reducing the risks of biometric systems. They include limitations to the collection and storage of biometric data as well as technical measures, which could influence the proportionality of the processing. The text is supported by several figures and tables providing a summary of particular points of the discussion. The book also uses the 2012 biometric vocabulary adopted by ISO and contains an extensive bibliography and literature sources.

Book The Images of Revelation

Download or read book The Images of Revelation written by Peter Scheele and published by Peter Scheele. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Revelation has many clues in it, that tell us how it should be understood. These clues include many references to the Old Testament that it's using. By putting these texts from other prophets alongside those of Revelation, the true meaning of the images of Revelation become obvious. But also the true meaning of the other prophets becomes clear. This might be a little bit different than what is being thaught all over the place today. Revelation is far more about God's plan with Israel/Judah than most people would like. Revelation is written while Nero was emperor. Revelation predicted the suicide of Nero and the civil war in Rome that erupted after that. Revelation predicted the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70. Revelation predicted Hitler and his Third Reich. Revelation predicted the resurrection of the people of Juda, that happened in 1948. Revelation predicts that Israel/Judah will accept Jesus as Mesiah to a large extend. Revelation shows what the true reading of Daniel 12 should be. Daniel 12 shows that the season in which Jesus will come back has already started and this season will end at 2060.

Book Undercover Disguise Methods for Investigators

Download or read book Undercover Disguise Methods for Investigators written by Arabella Mazzuki and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The road to master of disguise is a difficult and exciting one, fraught with equal parts danger and intrigue, but fortunately you don’t have to go it alone. The book you now hold in your hands will serve as a roadmap through the disguise terrain; novices and masters alike will find in these pages invaluable wisdom, advice and guidance previously unavailable in such a concise format. Recent years have seen unprecedented technology advancements. However, investigation and intelligence agencies still need field personnel; they need feet on the ground. To be effective, investigators and clandestine service persons need strong tradecraft skills that include the ability to disguise themselves. This book presents undercover disguise methods that came into focus in the clandestine services of World War II, evolved during the Cold War, and today features modern innovations. Here the reader discovers the latest disguise technologies, traditional and innovative methods not taught by police academies or included in college law enforcement and criminal justice curriculums. Customary purposes for disguise include to avoid recognition, support a pretext character and the corresponding undercover operation, prevent somebody accurately describing the agent, and to thwart physical surveillance. Naturally, some disguises are quicker to implement than others and some are more believable. Some disguises withstand prolonged close-up scrutiny, whereas others are suitable only when viewed briefly or from afar. The authors have removed the mystery and made short work of carving out a path for anyone looking to hone their craft in the art of disguise, ensuring success for all who are daring enough to pursue this road less traveled.
