Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Don’t Necessarily” Trust Me, I’m a Doctor is a healthcare consumer’s guide to forging partnerships with trustworthy healthcare providers and avoiding the potentially life-threatening dangers of failing to do so. This includes information that will demystify the confusing nature of medical economics and provide a pathway to obtaining high-quality, evidence-based medical care at a reasonable cost. The earlier chapters define the trust problem and describe the gold standards for trustworthiness in both individuals and institutions in the healthcare industry. Subsequent chapters alert the consumer to the presence and specific characteristics of unreliable or dangerous providers and offer resources to identify and avoid them. The final chapters are devoted to describing the major problems with the current system of medical economics and include practical solutions to many of these difficulties. The primary goal of the book is to empower the American consumer with the information and tools required to become as sophisticated and savvy with their choices of healthcare services and products as they are with their choices of electronics and automobiles.
Download or read book That s Why I m a Doctor written by Mark Bulgutch and published by Douglas & McIntyre. This book was released on 2020-03-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctors hold a pretty special place in our lives. They’re often there when we’re born, and they’re usually there when we die. They’re there for a lot of the scary or weird stuff that happens in between, too. In That’s Why I’m a Doctor, award-winning journalist Mark Bulgutch brings together forty-six stories from a diverse group of physicians, including pediatricians, interventional radiologists, general surgeons, psychiatrists, family doctors, gastroenterologists, ophthalmologists, gynecologists, neurologists and more. Each doctor’s story describes the moment that left them thinking, “That’s why I became a doctor.” This volume includes stories of innovation (developing a treatment for cholera); rare and fascinating medical cases (the separation of conjoined twins); the less dramatic but still quietly satisfying times when the doctor was able to have a lasting positive impact on the life of a patient or their family; and, of course, those unexpected moments when the patient taught the doctor an important life lesson that would inform their practice for years to come. These stories, big and small, are tied together by a sense of caring. It’s impossible to read what these doctors have to say and not come away with a new understanding of what goes through the mind of the person on the other end of the stethoscope and how dedicated doctors must be to do what they do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lifelong pattern of use and abuse finally caught up with Dr. A. C. Gross when she was forty-three years old. She had been using drugs and alcohol to fix herself for as long as she could remember. Now, in You Can Trust MeIm a Doctor, Gross shares the story of her addiction and her journey to recovery. In this memoir, she describes growing up in a respectable, middle-class, Californian household where she was introduced to alcohol at a young age. She had her first taste of alcohol at age nine and first experienced being drunk at age fourteen. During her twenties, Gross tells how she continued to drink and experiment with drugs despite her rigorous studies. With her compulsive personality, excessive drinking and reckless use of pills became a constant part of everyday life. In 2004, with her physicians career in jeopardy and her family life unraveling, Gross was forced to seek help. Recovery was her next step, but it was not easy. She narrates how it took her nearly ten months to realize that recovery involved surrender of the old self to the will of God. You Can Trust MeIm a Doctor tells Grosss story of learning a new way of life.

Download or read book The Doctor s Stories written by Charles T. Chase, MD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reading William Carlos Williams’ The Doctor Stories the patients of my own past began to haunt me. Driving in my car, musing in elevators, winding down at my desk at the end of the work day; the patients in my own past just crowded out all thoughts in my mind. Their compelling stories nearly became an obsession. I began to keep a journal. In it, I kept track of who was haunting me and as much of their story as I could remember. As their numbers grew and I had more details clear in my mind, their stories took form and shape. I have always been one that remembers people by their face more than their name and the faces would appear and their stories would come back to me as though it was yesterday. Some of these patients had not been remembered for over thirty years going back to my time as a student and intern. And yet when I started to compose at my computer, the words just flowed. The stories wrote themselves. The emotions attached to the patients had not dimmed and propelled me forward in the effort to put their stories down in narrative form. There are scores of patients whose stories came back to me that I have organized into approximately 30 different chapters. Each story stands alone but all have the common themes of pathos, compassion, trial and triumph of the human spirit. The theme of the triumph of the human spirit suffuses the entire book. I am continually amazed at how humans can handle what life throws at them. We never know how much we can handle until we are asked to rise above extraordinary circumstances. At the same time there are the oddly amusing stories. Sometimes it is enough just to put a smile on one’s face. There are stories like that too. The patients in my book all have had to deal with the extraordinary. Everyone is vulnerable to illness and death. The patients described in the pages of my book stand out in some way as remarkable. The book is a memoir, but it is not about me. The book is about the patients and their struggles.
