Download or read book Russian Invasion of Ukraine Identity History Conflict written by Vladimir Putin and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 1808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which began in 2014. Following the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution, Russia annexed Crimea, and Russian-backed paramilitaries seized part of the Donbas region of south-eastern Ukraine, which consists of Lugansk and Donetsk oblasts, sparking a regional war. In March 2021, Russia began a large military build-up along its border with Ukraine, eventually amassing up to 190,000 troops and their equipment. Despite the build-up, denials of plans to invade or attack Ukraine were issued by various Russian government officials up to the day before the invasion. On 21 February 2022, Russia recognized the Donetsk People's Republic and the Lugansk People's Republic, two self-proclaimed breakaway quasi-states in the Donbas. The next day, the Federation Council of Russia authorized the use of military force and Russian troops entered both territories. This book tries to shed light on the causes which led to this war. It presents arguments of both sides carried through the words of presidents Putin and Zelenskyy. This edition includes as well the book about the historical background of the conflict and the military actions during the war. Content: The Speeches and Decisions of Vladimir Putin The Speeches and Decisions of Volodymyr Zelenskyy The Consequence: Russo-Ukrainian War

Book excerpt: A selection of fifteen of Ukraine's most important, dynamic and entertaining contemporary writers Under USSR rule, the subject matter and style of literary expression in Ukraine was strictly controlled and censored. But once Ukraine gained independence in 1991 its literary scene flourished, as the moving and delightful poems, essays and extracts collected here show. There are fifteen authors included in this book, both established and emerging, and in this anthology we see them grappling with history and the future, with big questions and small moments. From essays about Chernobyl to poetry about Robbie Williams, from fiction discussing Jimmy Hendrix live in Lviv to underground Ukrainian poetry of the Soviet era, WRITING FROM UKRAINE offers a unique window into a rich culture, a chance to experience a particularly Ukrainian sensibility and to celebrate Ukraine's nationhood, as told by its writers.

Book Ukraine s Quest for Identity

Download or read book Ukraine s Quest for Identity written by Maria G. Rewakowicz and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Omeljan Pritsak Book Prize in Ukrainian Studies. Ukraine's Quest for Identity: Embracing Cultural Hybridity in Literary Imagination, 1991–2011 is the first study that looks at the literary process in post-independence Ukraine comprehensively and attempts to draw the connection between literary production and identity construction. In its quest for identity Ukraine has followed a path similar to other postcolonial societies, the main characteristics of which include a slow transition, hybridity, and identities negotiated on the center-periphery axis. This monograph concentrates on major works of literature produced during the first two decades of independence and places them against the background of clearly identifiable contexts such as regionalism, gender issues, language politics, social ills, and popular culture. It also shows that Ukrainian literary politics of that period privileges the plurality and hybridity of national and cultural identities. By engaging postcolonial discourse and insisting that literary production is socially instituted, Maria G. Rewakowicz explores the reasons behind the tendency toward cultural hybridity and plural identities in literary imagination. Ukraine’s Quest for Identity will appeal to all those keen to study cultural, social and political ramifications of the collapse of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe and beyond.

Download or read book Tehran written by Asma Mehan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary research work designed to be of interest to a broad range of academics. The book examines the relationship between democracy and the (trans)formations of urban spaces through comparative perspective. It engages with the ideas of ‘modernity’ in architecture and investigates how they might align (or not) with other forms of radical power. This book offers an understanding of the public spaces through political change, power struggle, and autocratic modernity manifested. It addresses the subject of politics in architecture and built environment by examining the various academic literature in urban studies, architectural history, urban anthropology, urban sociology, cultural geographies, planning history, philosophy, and the broader social and political sciences. Followingly, it will be focused on the less well-known traditions of architecture and democratic values drawing upon western and (non)western perspectives to decolonize the notion of public space in the global south. In better words, the book investigates the mechanisms of power struggles and the transformative dynamism of totalization and state-led modernization, which motivates or shapes a creative tension in the form of the city. The topic of the work is novel and aims to examine the relationship between the affordances of public spaces, their micro-histories, and the emergence of critical social events and movements. The breadth of the topic demanded engagement with a rich body of architectural theory and history and relevant texts in urban sociology, colonial and postcolonial studies, political geography, and cultural studies, a challenge to which the book has responded outstandingly. The issue is urgent for policymakers and architects, urban designers, political and cultural geographers, and other practitioners working on the built environment to create more democratic public spaces in the global south.

Book The Importance of Peeling Potatoes in Ukraine

Download or read book The Importance of Peeling Potatoes in Ukraine written by Mark Yakich and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unconventional collection from a National Poetry Series award-winning poet, author of Spiritual Exercises Mark Yakich 's acclaimed debut collection, Unrelated Individuals Forming a Group Waiting to Cross, examined the blessing and curse of romantic love in its multiplicities. The poems in his new collection approach questions of suffering and atrocity (e.g., war, genocide, fallen soufflés) with discerning humor and unconventional comedy. These poems show how humor can be taken as seriously as straight-ahead solemnity and how we can re-envision solemnity in terms other than lamentation, protest, and memorial.

Book Coderspeak

Download or read book Coderspeak written by Guilherme Orlandini Heurich and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software applications have taken over our lives. We use and are used by software many times a day. Nevertheless, we know very little about the invisibly ubiquitous workers who write software. Who are they and how do they perceive their own practice? How does that shape the ways in which they collaborate to build the myriad of apps that we use every day? Coderspeak provides a critical approach to the digital transformation of our world through an engaging and thoughtful analysis of the people who write software. It is a focused and in-depth look at one programming language and its community – Ruby - based on ethnographic research at a London company and conversations with members of the wider Ruby community in Europe, the Americas and Japan. This book shows that the place people write code, the language they write it in and the stories shared by that community are crucial in questioning and unpacking what it means to be a ‘coder’. Understanding this social group is essential if we are to grasp a future (and a present) in which computer programming increasingly dominates our lives. Praise for Coderspeak 'Heurich perfectly captures the generous camaraderie, quirky spirit and intellectual curiosity at the heart of the Ruby world. Packed with tidbits of Ruby history, code snippets, and fascinating conversations, this book has something to teach every Rubyist.' Jemma Issroff, Ruby Core Team

Book The Power of Language

Download or read book The Power of Language written by Viorica Marian and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sparkles with insight.”—Daniel Pink This revolutionary book goes beyond any recent book on language to dissect how language operates in our minds and how to harness its virtually limitless power. As Dr. Marian explains, while you may well think you speak only one language, in fact your mind accommodates multiple codes of communication. Some people speak Spanish, some Mandarin. Some speak poetry, some are fluent in math. The human brain is built to use multiple languages, and using more languages opens doors to creativity, brain health, and cognitive control. Every new language we speak shapes how we extract and interpret information. It alters what we remember, how we perceive ourselves and the world around us, how we feel, the insights we have, the decisions we make, and the actions we take. Language is an invaluable tool for organizing, processing, and structuring information, and thereby unleashing radical advancement. Learning a new language has broad lifetime consequences, and Dr. Marian reviews research showing that it: · Enhances executive function—our ability to focus on the things that matter and ignore the things that don’t. · Results in higher scores on creative-thinking tasks. · Develops critical reasoning skills. · Delays Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia by four to six years. · Improves decisions made under emotional duress. · Changes what we see, pay attention to, and recall.

Britain offers covert support in the form of five MI7 agents. However, once the five operatives are shipped east, events take an unexpected turn. One by one, they begin to disappear. Enter Grey Department’s John Mordred, by grudging consensus, MI7’s best agent. Especially when the lives of his co-agents are at stake. Which – given the job description - they usually are … “James Ward brings protagonist John Mordred alive on the page … The author displays exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling.” – Emerald Book Review.
