Book excerpt: My Son, My Father, My Hero is based on the journal that was kept by Larry A. Woodruffs parents from the beginning of his illness. During the first week of dealing with this horrible nightmare, they met another mother whose son had cancer. She gave them some tips on how to get the best care and choices for their son. She told them to keep a daily journal of his medicines and treatments and record how he reacted to them. When the doctors order a medical test, she told them to ask what they hoped to learn and what they would do differently after obtaining the results. And she told them to never forget that this was a teaching hospital and that the medical staff would do tests to learn different things concerning the illness. This book was written to help other parents and families with loved ones who have had not only cancer but also other diseases that put a family in dreadful distress. The disease affects not only the patient but also everyone who is in direct contact with him or her. Download or read book A Damn Near Perfect Game written by Joe Kelly and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball’s most outspoken fireballer brings the high heat—calling out the hacks, cheats, and ridiculous rules that have tarnished the game—and pitches a-plus stuff on how to make baseball pure, fun, and damn near perfect. Baseball has an image problem. The chorus of nonbelievers gets louder every year, and the Major Leagues have made an art of tuning them out. Enter Joe Kelly: a walking, talking, fast-ball-throwing embodiment of why baseball matters. He and his All-Star team of athletes and celebrities have some things to say about what’s gone wrong with our once great game and how to fix it. A Damn Near Perfect Game is the loudest insider’s exposé of the laws and culture of Major League Baseball since Jim Bouton’s classic Ball Four. From Kelly’s perspective as a two-time World Series champion and baseball’s most memeable player according to ESPN, he takes readers on a house-cleaning tour of the clubhouse, the field of play, the bullpen, the front office, the commissioner’s office, and a ballplayer’s restricted life off the field. Kelly has something to say about baseball’s rule changes (pitch clocks, limiting defensive shifts, the designated hitter); hacks (overused analytics, sign-stealing); stale promotion to new fans; and encouraging players’ emotions (let them fight, bat-flip, and talk sh*t!). Plus, he details how he aired his complaints in an illuminating meeting with commissioner Rob Manfred. And to show what happens when baseball has some piss and vinegar, Kelly gives the inside scoop on his legendary exploits—starting a bench-clearing brawl with the Yankees’ Tyler Austin, his famous “pouty face” scene when calling out the notorious sign-stealing Houston Astros, and wearing a mariachi jacket to visit the White House with his World Series champion LA Dodgers.

Download or read book Joe You Coulda Made Us Proud written by Joe Pepitone and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age seventeen Joe Pepitone signed with the New York Yankees, and soon experts were predicting that he would be the team’s next superstar. He could run, throw, and field, and he had a sweet home run swing. But during his twelve years in the major leagues Pepitone devoted most of his energy to swinging off the field. He blew his career, destroyed two marriages, lost custody of three children, and came very close to a nervous breakdown. At the age of thirty-three he quit baseball for good and finally admitted that for most of his life, he’d been living a lie. He’d been acting the carefree clown in order to cover up immense inner pain. In Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud, first published in 1975, Pepitone reveals what was behind his wild behavior. He does so in the most devastatingly honest terms, holding back none of the embarrassment, anguish, and guilt that perpetually haunted him. He tells of the father he loved so much, “Willie Pep” Pepitone, the toughest man in a tough Brooklyn neighborhood. Obsessed with making Joe a baseball star, Willie beat his son when he failed to meet expectations. One night, enraged at his father, Joe said, “Mom—I wish he’d die!” Willie died the next day. Along with pain, the book has plenty of humor. Pepitone tells of partying with Frank Sinatra and Mickey Mantle, carousing with groupies and hookers, and “living the life” of a famous ballplayer in the sixties and seventies. One of the most moving, honest, and hilarious books ever written by an athlete, Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud was selected by Esquire magazine as one of the “20 best baseball books ever.” Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Download or read book MAC written by Virginia Freytag MacGeorge and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To tell this story I have to start somewhere. These letters (and there are almost 300 of them) have been in three boxes, all tied together with a double wrap of cord. They have been tied up in those boxes for over fi fty years; a few of the early letters are fi fty-nine years old. One box was a four-pound, heart shaped Fanny Farmer candy box. One of the white gift shirt boxes contained a white satin night gown, a blue print rayon dress which I had made, and a small knitted, very dainty looking blue baby sweater, which I also had made. Once I tied them together I never looked at them again until now, and I really regret that I did not do it sooner. There are so many questions I would ask, but now it is too late.
