Book excerpt: Since antiquity, the she-wolf has served as the potent symbol of Rome. For more than two thousand years, the legendary animal that rescued Romulus and Remus has been the subject of historical and political accounts, literary treatments in poetry and prose, and visual representations in every medium. In She-Wolf: The Story of a Roman Icon, Cristina Mazzoni examines the evolution of the she-wolf as a symbol in western history, art, and literature, from antiquity to contemporary times. Used, for example, as an icon of Roman imperial power, papal authority, and the distance between the present and the past, the she-wolf has also served as an allegory for greed, good politics, excessive female sexuality, and, most recently, modern, multi-cultural Rome. Mazzoni engagingly analyzes the various role guises of the she-wolf over time in the first comprehensive study in any language on this subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the Jew follows the evolution of stereotypes of Jews from the level of traditional Romanian and other Central-East European cultures (their legends, fairy tales, ballads, carols, anecdotes, superstitions, and iconographic representations) to that of "high" cultures (including literature, essays, journalism, and sociopolitical writings), showing how motifs specific to "folkloric antisemitism" migrated to "intellectual antisemitism." This comparative perspective also highlights how the images of Jews have differed from that of other "strangers" such as Hungarians, Germans, Roma, Turks.

Book Would You Lie to Save a Life

Download or read book Would You Lie to Save a Life written by Michael Glenn Maness and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would You Lie to Save a Life? Love Will Find a Way Home: A Theology on the Ethics of Love In 1968, Commander Lloyd Bucher and the USS Pueblo were pirated on the high seas. They were held captive for 11 months, and Bucher was forced to sign a confession – forced to lie to save the lives of his men. How does Love impact that decsion in a Christian theology? Love makes the world go round. Without Love, little else has value this side of heaven. In this dilemma between Love and Truth, Love was chosen over Truth, but not at the expense of all Truth. Between the deontological and teleological elements, time itself comes into play in the determination of the absolute "rightness" of the choice in perfect Love. How is as capable as Jesus was and is today? The course of Love is a sacred "stewardship of time" that is the highest exhibition of the Christian’s own Imago Dei or image of God granted to us in creation. When we are able to follow the Scarlet Thread of obedience perfectly, it will lead straight through all of (1) the areas of complexity, uniting (2) all of the demands of all of the absolutes and run dead center between (3) all of the ethical fine lines. These three areas are detailed specifically.

Book Exporting Democracy

Download or read book Exporting Democracy written by Sophia Z Kovachevich and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is in ferment. The situation of today’s world is at its worst. There is trouble in every part of the world. We were supposed to have peace and prosperity at the end of the Great Wars. And for a few decades we did. The Cold War kept peace of sorts and no major wars were fought. But it all changed with the collapse of the USSR. We lost the balance of power and only USA dominated. At the moment there are wars all over the world on every continent – it is the super-powers attacking small nations. The excuses are taking democracy to those countries by force through war or war on terror. We are terrorising small nations in the name of ending terror by bringing not only terror, but also death, destruction and annihilation in our wake. This book sets out to comprehensively look at the reasons behind the present condition of the world today. It looks to uncover if there is any real democracy in the world today and the types of democracy available to us. Not everything is suited to everyone. We certainly do not want totalitarian rule in the name of democracy. But that is the way we are going. It is time to stop. Take stock and decide – do we want a better world or do we want to destroy this world? Perhaps we are the final throes of our civilisation and don’t even realise it!

Book excerpt: After the disaster at Stalingrad, Karlos von Ohr, a Luftwaffe pilot, returns to Berlin to discover that a small group of army officers is secretly plotting not only to bring an end to a losing, stupid war but even to put an end to Hitler. Luckily Karlos is transferred to faraway Romania, where his father is the chief flight instructor for the local air force. The local dictator, Marshal Antonescu, a friend of Hitler, refuses to acknowledge that by the spring of 1943 the Third Reich is everywhere in retreat. In nearby Istanbul Karlos uncle Siegfried runs an art gallery and does a little spying on the side. In that neutral city Karlos contrives to meet a friendly American agent who promises (for a price) to help Karlos defect to the Allied lines in Italy. Of course, Karlos realizes that if he renounces his allegiance to Hitler and goes over to the enemy, he will be denounced as a traitor by his countrymen. He can never go back home to Berlin. Karlos wonders: Am I about to make the worst (and last) mistake of my life?

Book Aspects of Independent Romania s Economic History with Particular Reference to Transition for EU Accession

Download or read book Aspects of Independent Romania s Economic History with Particular Reference to Transition for EU Accession written by Professor David Turnock and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After fifteen years of transition in the former communist states of Central and Eastern Europe it has become clear that for a substantial number the objective of reform and restructuring process is a market system in line with membership of the EU. In this study the long term economic transformation of Romania is studied, offering a detailed narrative and thematic account of events from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. From the first steps towards large scale industrialisation begun prior to the First World War, through the accelerated pace set by the communist regime after 1945 and the uncertainty following its subsequent collapse in 1989, the book addresses a wide range of pertinent issues that have shaped Romania's economic development. The study also offers an interpretation of a distinctive phase in the modernisation of post-communist Romania, supported by economic-historical surveys of the proceeding century as a context for recent restructuring on the eve of EU accession. This is linked with trends in the region as a whole so that a broad perspective is maintained throughout the book. By highlighting Romania's position as one of more backward accession states and considering in what ways its experience during transition differs from the more developed states of the region, this study offers a valuable insight into both the history of Romania, and its future prospects. Furthermore it provides a valuable case study that can be compared and contrasted with other countries who are likewise still grappling with the legacy of a centralised economy, and in the process of adopting a more market orientated approach in order to gain EU membership. As such this study will be of interest not only to historians and economists, but anyone with an interest in the expansion of the European Union.

Book German Balkan Entangled Histories in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book German Balkan Entangled Histories in the Twentieth Century written by Christopher A. Molnar and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a diverse group of scholars from North America and Europe to explore the history and memory of Germany’s fateful push for power in the Balkans during the era of the two world wars and the long postwar period. Each chapter focuses on one or more of four interrelated themes: war, empire, (forced) migration, and memory. The first section, “War and Empire in the Balkans,” explores Germany’s quest for empire in Southeast Europe during the first half of the century, a goal that was pursued by economic and military means. The book’s second section, “Aftershocks and Memories of War,” focuses on entangled German-Balkan histories that were shaped by, or a direct legacy of, Germany’s exceptionally destructive push for power in Southeast Europe during World War II. German-Balkan Entangled Histories in the Twentieth Century expands and enriches the neglected topic of Germany’s continued entanglements with the Balkans in the era of the world wars, the Cold War, and today.

  • ISBN : 9780810119024
  • Pages : 742 pages

Download or read book The Bitter Smell of Almonds written by Arnošt Lustig and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, Arnost Lustig's short story collections Street of Lost Brothers and Indecent Dreams and his novel Dita Saxova are brought together in an omnibus edition. As with all of Lustig's works, these tales reverberate with themes of loss and contradiction, with the torments of suffering and survival. In The Bitter Smell of Almonds, Lustig asks questions as old and as universal as humankind's search for the meaning of existence; and his characters, often juxtaposed against people or situations they cannot comprehend, attempt to come to terms with the unthinkable and with life itself.
