Book excerpt: When the school year ends, Sierra and her friends plan to have a horsy good time riding their horses, teaching summer day camp, and helping their favorite riding instructor arrange a wedding to the local animal-control officer. Difficulties arise before they even pass their final exams. Robin wants to work at the vintage car lot with the beautiful, classic Mustangs she loves. However, her parents are sending her to horse camp whether she likes it or not and she doesn’t! Meanwhile, Vicky intends to train horses. Does her dream job mean she can’t spend time with her boyfriend before he leaves for college? Horse camp brings in much needed income to the McElroy’s Shamrock Stable, so how can a talented athlete like Sierra tell her family she wants to join the high school basketball and soccer teams at their training camps instead of teaching little beginners again? After a stunning performance in the spring musical, will Dani ever be able to let her glory-hungry parents know she’d rather be at the barn this summer, not on stage in a theatrical company in Oregon? Catch rider, CeCe worries she won’t be ‘emancipated’ and allowed to remain with the people who offered her a ‘real’ home but are her new friends too busy to help when she needs them most? It’s a drama-rama summer at Shamrock Stable. What will the five of them do to stay together and ensure each girl’s dreams come true?

Download or read book Horsing Around written by Lawrence Clayton and published by Texas Tech University Press. This book was released on 1998-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tradition of storytelling and folklore reaches deeply into the American notion of national identity, and among the more prominent emblems of American culture stands the cowboy. Despite the attempts to modernize the cowboy of our frontier past, today's mounted horsemen have learned how to adapt to a rapidly changing world--while tenaciously holding on to their heritage. Tall tales and yarns make up a great amount of the folklore of this literary tradition, yet woven throughout such stories stir an American mixture of humor, wisdom, and philosophy. In Horsing Around, Clayton, Davis, and Collins draw upon the vast amount of anecdotes portraying the lighter side of working on the range. The collected vignettes in Horsing Around will provide the collector of Texana greater accessibility to stories that are often told only at public performances.

Download or read book Roughnecking written by Robert S. Blair and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-09-08 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1950's in the Four Corners area, it took a different kind of man to work out in the oil fields. They were known as "roughnecks" and led lives full of danger, excitement and hard work. These men loved to work as much as they loved to play and camaraderie was a necessity; whether they were out on an oil rig hundreds of miles from civilization, or getting lost out in the wilderness while on a fishing trip. Robert Blair wrote about his adventures working and playing with men who were not only some of the most skilled men in America, they also became life-long friends of his. He traveled all over the Four Corners area working on oil rigs, hunting in the Colorado mountains and digging up ancient remains in New Mexico. The beautiful mesas, clear rivers, and exquisite mountains and vegetation are all referenced with great admiration. It was a different world back then. Men were happy to be Americans and proud of working outdoors for a living. Robert's story is lots of fun and at times sad, but to get a glimpse of these men' lives during that era, is quite fascinating.

Book excerpt: Dear ____________________, I know I can never really tell you about my summer at Camp Pine Haven. Since nobody here knows the real me I've decided to become a new person. I've gotten a fresh start as a loud, funny girl named J.D. (So much cooler sounding than Judith Duckworth!) I've made a point of picking activities Judith would NEVER choose, finding friends Judith would never talk to, and saying things Judith would never say. I just wonder how far I'll have to go to keep up the act. Sincerely, JD

He's got a heart and the more she works with him, the harder it is to stay away from him. His father is an engineer at Harcourt Mill, and Willis is awestruck by the family’s wealth and power. Seeking guidance from Henry Harcourt, Willis meets Bess, the old man’s granddaughter. Determined to make his own way, he sets out on a path that will take him far beyond New England and the insular, old-money world of Henry and Bess. Then the Depression hits, wiping out the Harcourt family fortune. When he comes back into their life, Willis has the power to rescue the last vestige of the family’s prestige: the mill. Book excerpt: IF ANIMALS COULD SPEAK is a fantasy that examines the human condition and our relationship to the animal kingdom. Inspired by 9/11/2001, the central themes of the novel are betrayal, terror, loss, heroism and love. Unlike that infamous September day, however, the primary victims and heroes of LoCicero's work are not human, but a band of farm animals. Faced with the destruction of their farm after its sale to developers, they valiantly but vainly battle the construction workers and their cruel, scar-faced boss. Exiled and pursued, their numbers grow as they recruit a dog, a bear, a colony of bats, a band of raccoons, an eagle, and ultimately a human who was an eyewitness to the terrorist attack on New York's Twin Towers. The latter, a stage actor nicknamed Shake, is also a fugitive, suspected by overzealous government agents of being a terrorist. Horse ultimately takes the unprecedented action of revealing the animals' most guarded secret to Shake. The latter repays their trust after making a remarkable discovery in the far recesses of a mountain cave, a find that has the potential of securing them lasting peace and freedom. In order to do this, however, they must locate Farmer and enlist him to their cause.

Book excerpt: A story of a tragedy that might have been but thankfully wasn't, from the author of Femarine. In 1940, the sky above the English Channel was a battlefield. 'The few' were the heartbreakingly-young fighter pilots on the Allied side, not all of whom were British. Many were the bombs which fell, not all of them on target - a rain of bombs which sank into semi-retirement on the quiet seabed. When the Channel Tunnel was dug under those sleeping dogs they continued to lie, but at the opening of the tunnel, a terrorist bomb unleashed them with a vengeance, and the few became those who were now trapped, with the whole English Channel about to rain in on them.

A combination of fiery rhetoric and brazen acts of violence force Mick to flee his beloved homeland, an odyssey which takes the young Irishman to various locations around the world, including a stint in the United States where he assumes a new name and identity. Lulled into complacency by his middle-American surroundings to the plight of those who considered him a savior, Mick eventually becomes estranged from the freedom struggle in Northern Ireland. Mick’s previous life would eventually catch up with him, however, thrusting Mick McNabb back into The Troubles of Northern Ireland. Initially in the good graces of the Irish Republican Army, Mick’s reckless exploits, as well as growing cult of personality and megalomania, eventually cause the IRA to consider him a liability and a detriment, and the freedom fighter from Belfast soon finds himself a target of both sides in the century-old conflict.
