Book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Download or read book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings written by Maya Angelou and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide. Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned. Poetic and powerful, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings liberates the reader into life simply because Maya Angelou confronts her own life with such a moving wonder, such a luminous dignity.”—James Baldwin From the Paperback edition.

Book excerpt: “Readers new to the work of Christopher Moore will want to know two things immediately. First: Where has this guy been hiding? (Answer: In plain sight, since he has a cult following.)...[H]e writes laid back fables straight out of Margaritaville, on the cusp of humor and science fiction.”—Janet Maslin, New York Times Whale researcher Nathan Quinn has a problem. It’s not a new problem; in fact, it’s been around for nearly 20 million years. And Nate’s spent most of his adult life working to solve it. You see, although everybody (well, almost everybody) knows that humpback whales sing (outside of human composition, the most complex songs on the planet) no one knows why. Nate, a Ph.D. in behavior biology, intends to discover the answer to this burning question—and soon. Every winter he and Clay Demolocus, his partner in the Maui Whale Research Foundation, ply the warm waters between the islands of Maui and Lanai, recording the eerily beautiful songs of the humpbacks and returning to their lab for electronic analysis. The trouble is, Nate’s beginning to wonder if he hasn’t spent just a little too much time in the sun. Either that, or he’s losing his mind. Because today, as he was shooting an I.D. photo of a humpback tail fluke, Nate could’ve sworn he saw the words “Bite Me” scrawled across the whale’s tail. . .

Book Understanding I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Download or read book Understanding I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings written by Joanne Megna-Wallace and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-06-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maya Angelou's autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was nominated for a National Book Award, yet in 1995 it topped the list of books most frequently challenged in schools and libraries. This interdisciplinary collection of documents and commentary explores the historical and social context, as well as the contemporary issues and controversies raised by Angelou's autobiography. A rich resource for teachers and students, it will help to enhance the reader's understanding of the historical and social forces that shaped Maya Angelou's experience—race relations in the pre-civil rights South, segregated schools, the African American church, and the African American family. It also examines the issue of childhood sexual abuse, the inclusion of which has been the basis of most of the challenges to the autobiography, and the issue of the work's censorship since its publication. This rich resource begins with a literary analysis of the structure and dramatic elements of Angelou's autobiography, as well as discussion of the genre of autobiography. Subsequent chapters include introductions and documents that provide insight into the topics of race relations, lynchings, and racial etiquette; the education of African Americans in the South in the 1930s (particularly county training schools like the one Angelou attended); the otherworldliness, emotion, and music of the African American church; African American women as nurturers, and the effect of frequent migration on children such as Angelou; information from the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect which puts the sexual abuse Angelou experiences in a broader context; and many news stories regarding censorship attempts on I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Documents in the work include newspaper articles, interviews and first-person narratives, government documents, excerpts from books and journals, and legal statutes. Study questions, ideas for project topics, and suggested readings conclude each chapter and further enhance the usefulness of this interdisciplinary research tool for students and teachers.

In the real world we are all free to ask that we may grow. It is the relationship between the Creator and the created that is the beginning of our understanding. And this is the first step in the finding of faith in the discovery of what love is and in the wonder of being loved. When the answer is given we can move forward into the new day. We have right now and the journey begins with our first breath and ends with our last sigh. In between it is the miracles unfolding that are the treasures we keep forever. The one who gives is the true gift and there in the giving is the miracle itself- that we are remembered.

This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom One of the best and most influential books written in English since 1923. A biblical study of life in the midst of death. A New York Times bestseller. A National Book Awards nominee. One of the essential books produced by our culture. One of the most banned books in America. All of these phrases have been used to describe I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The much-loved and oft-feared book is Maya Angelou’s autobiography. Within the context of her life story, Angelou dares to examine racism, sexism, familial bonds, feminine strength, religion, sexual violence, and the things we do survive. The story begins when she is three years old and sent with her brother to live with their grandmother in rural Arkansas. It ends with the sense of empowerment Angelou felt upon giving birth to her son Guy when she was only 17 years old. Maya Angelou is now in her 80s and still revered for her wisdom, independence, and grace. She has managed to achieve great success as a writer, actress, dancer, director, musician, editor, activist, philanthropist, teacher, and mother. She is called doctor and has received countless honors. And yet Angelou never went to college. She was a single teenage mother. She grew up in rural, segregated Arkansas. She was mute for many years. She once lived in a junkyard for a month. When she was just eight years old, she was raped. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK She didn’t want her family to think she was a bad person, but she felt awful about lying. Mr. Freeman received a light sentence and was released that day. His body was found that evening. Maya blamed herself for Mr. Freeman’s death and decided not to talk anymore for fear of hurting others. Not knowing what to do with Maya, the Baxter family sent her and Bailey back to Stamps. Bailey dealt with his devastation by making outlandish stories about St Louis, while Maya continued in her silence. Many of the townsfolk didn’t understand and thought she was uppity or simple. Momma and Uncle Willy simply accepted it with understanding. Commentary From today’s perspective, it seems almost criminal that the family never took Maya to a therapist. How could they ever expect a little girl to understand that what had happened to her and subsequently to Mr. Freeman was not her fault? How could they simply send her away when she stopped talking? And yet, in those days people didn’t talk about such things. The adults didn’t know how to deal with the rape, so how could they know how to deal with the little girl that was raped? They just didn’t talk about it and hoped that the experience would fade with time. It obviously didn’t. Chapters 15 & 16 Summary Mrs. Bertha Flowers is a wealthy, educated woman and the closest thing the black community in Stamps has to aristocracy. She and Momma have been friends for years. One day Mrs. Flowers comes into the store and asks Maya to carry her grocery bags home for her and visit for a little while. She tells Maya that speaking is very important in life and gives her a book to read aloud. Mrs. Flowers also challenges Maya to memorize some poems and recite them on her next visit. Once Maya gets her voice back, she begins working for Mrs. Viola Cullinan... Buy the book to continue reading! Follow @hyperink on Twitter! Visit us at www.facebook.com/hyperink!
