Download or read book The Blue Hippopotamus written by Paul Ehrlich and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing The Blue Hippopotamus was great fun-sort of reliving my early life and making some incidents even better than they were the first time. What I wanted most of all was to write a page-turner, to give the reader a chance to actually live and feel what I had lived and felt. In a sense, my own life was a page-turner, from day to day, and a wonderful one that I enjoyed and loved-even the difficult and painful happenings. I think that I've been tremendously lucky to have had such a-almost a charmed life-and that's what I wanted to share with the reader. Yes, there were moments and incidents that were difficult and sometimes very painful, like when I said my final goodbye to Maidi, the love of my life, and what a remarkable love that was-several professional authors have called that good-bye "heartbreaking," and so it was. It was my heart that was breaking, and Maidi's, but we both knew that it had to be that way, and we accepted it. And then of course, many, many years later, we finally met again by chance, or by accident, in Paris, and the closure we had needed for so many years finally arrived. I wrote the book when I was ninety, and I was the last survivor of our group of five. We had all been made to swear that we would never tell. But after seventy years, I felt the story could, and should, be told.

Book The Secret Life of Larry Lizard

Download or read book The Secret Life of Larry Lizard written by Russel Hirst and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Lizard lives deep in the Redwood Forest with his mom, dad, sisters, and brothers. At bedtime, under starry skies, his parents tell their little lizards tales about their ancestors: the mighty dragons and dinosaurs! Next day, while his parents are busy and his siblings are nowhere in sight, Larry pretends to be the great king of all dinosaurs—Tyrannosaurus rex—and as his imagination takes over, he sees dinosaurs in everything around him, from the water to the insects to even the clouds above! Soon he is battling a Brontosaurus, then leaping at a flying Pterodactyl, stomping, chomping, and roaring at his prey. As Larry walked, he passed a pool and watched his muscles flex; today our hero was a great Tyrannosaurus rex. The King of Dinos looked about and spied his meal at hand: a huge and heavy Brontosaur was sleeping in the sand. . . . The Secret Life of Larry Lizard is a delightful poem about the fun of adventurous imaginative play and the excitement that comes with learning about one’s ancestors—and the awesomeness of dinosaurs! This picture book includes a glossary, titled “Things to Know,” which is both informative and humorous, plus a Family Tree where children can write the names of some of their ancestors.

Book The Politics of Size

  • Author : Ragen Chastain
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2014-11-25
  • ISBN : 1440829500

Download or read book The Politics of Size written by Ragen Chastain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an unprecedented opportunity for people to hear from a simultaneously ostracized, ridiculed, and ignored group: fat Americans. Find out how the members of this very diverse group of people describe their actual lived experiences, quality of life, hopes and dreams, and demands. Our society is body-size obsessed. The result? An environment where "fat people" are consistently shunned and discussed disparagingly behind their backs. Although fat people typically bear the brunt of the institutionalized oppression around being oversized, pervasive closeminded attitudes about body size in America affect everyone of all sizes—from people who are shamed for being too thin to those whose lives revolve around the fear of becoming fat. This book talks about a topic that is important to all readers, regardless of their physical size, providing an anthology of first-person accounts of what it's like to be part of the fat-acceptance movement and on the front lines of activism in the "war on obesity." The Politics of Size: Perspectives from the Fat Acceptance Movement supplies a frank discussion of the issues surrounding being fat and the associated health concerns—both physical and mental—and reframes the discussion about obesity from a medical issue to a social one. The essays serve to correct misinformation about obesity and fat people that is commonly accepted by the general public, such as the idea that "fat" and "healthy" are mutually exclusive. Subject matter covered includes fat-friendly workplace policies; fat dating experiences; and the intersections of being fat and also a person of color, a person with disabilities, a transgender person, or a member of another sub-group of society.
