Book excerpt: Brigham Young was one of the most influential—and controversial—Mormon leaders in American history. An early follower of the new religion, he led the cross-continental migration of the Mormon people from Illinois to Utah, where he built a vast religious empire that was both revolutionary and authoritarian, radically different from yet informed by the existing culture of the U.S. With his powerful personality and sometimes paradoxical convictions, Young left an enduring stamp on both his church and the region, and his legacy remains active today. In a lively, concise narrative bolstered by primary documents, and supplemented by a robust companion website, David Mason tells the dynamic story of Brigham Young, and in the process, illuminates the history of the LDS Church, religion in America, and the development of the American west. This book will be a vital resource for anyone seeking to understand the complex, uniquely American origins of a church that now counts over 15 million members worldwide.

Book Autobiography of Protest in Hawaii

Download or read book Autobiography of Protest in Hawaii written by Robert H. Mast and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography of Protest in Hawai‘i explores the state's social and economic fabric through the comments of 35 progressive activists. The activists, ranging in age from the mid-30s to the late 70s, comment on their involvement on issues such as housing, labor, land use, poverty, environment, sexual harassment, seniors, and sovereignty. Almost one-half are women and there is an even split between those born in Hawai‘i and those born elsewhere. The book begins with an overview of political activism in Hawai‘i, and then records the oral history of the individual activists. Each was asked to respond to factors that shaped their moral and political lives. They were invited to explore the forces and events in their past that led them to take on an activist role. The activists were also asked to provide personal assessments of insights gained from their experiences and how they can be applied today, their analysis of Hawai‘i at that time, and some speculation on Hawai‘i's future. The result is a book that produces some very interesting and controversial viewpoints on Hawai‘i's political socialization and history.

Book Work and Play in Southern Indiana

Download or read book Work and Play in Southern Indiana written by Daniel D. Scherschel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WORK AND PLAY in southern Indiana" is the third in a series of my books. It is in the time of the 1970's and 1980's. In it is some things learned working construction and then at a foundry. Also are thoughts on three wheelers, rafting creeks and walking through train tunnels. My first book MAPLE GROVE, was of growing up on a dairy farm. My second book, MAPLE GROVE THE 60's, was of some things I learned during my teenage years. Wanting to save stories for my grandchildren, I bought a computer in 1990 and started compiling my hand written writings. I am just an average person with my average stories. People seem to enjoy relating to these average stories, remembering their version of life.

Apprentice calls spiritual pilgrims, both Christians and non-Christians, to exchange the shallow diversions of secular and religious culture for the pursuit of our true desires. In a book of refreshing honesty, great heart, and rich creativity, Steve Chalke guides us into an apprenticeship with the master teacher, Jesus. Embarking on a relational journey that engages us on every level, we walk with Jesus in an organic, whole-life learning experience, exploring ten areas foundational to the meaning and depth we crave. Apprentice encourages us to ask our most probing questions, embrace our doubts, and learn why we are driven to belong. Combining story and parable with thoughtful commentary, we discover the ancient art and discipline of apprenticeship— living lives stamped with the character, presence, and impact of Jesus.
