Book A Tortilla Is Like Life

Download or read book A Tortilla Is Like Life written by Carole M. Counihan and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative portrait of a small Colorado town based on a decade’s worth of food-centered life histories from nineteen of its female residents. Located in the southern San Luis Valley of Colorado, the remote and relatively unknown town of Antonito is home to an overwhelmingly Hispanic population struggling not only to exist in an economically depressed and politically marginalized area, but also to preserve their culture and their lifeways. Between 1996 and 2006, anthropologist Carole Counihan collected food-centered life histories from nineteen Mexicanas―Hispanic American women―who had long-standing roots in the Upper Rio Grande region. The interviews in this groundbreaking study focused on southern Colorado Hispanic foodways―beliefs and behaviors surrounding food production, distribution, preparation, and consumption. In this book, Counihan features extensive excerpts from these interviews to give voice to the women of Antonito and highlight their perspectives. Three lines of inquiry are framed: feminist ethnography, Latino cultural citizenship, and Chicano environmentalism. Counihan documents how Antonito’s Mexicanas establish a sense of place and belonging through their knowledge of land and water and use this knowledge to sustain their families and communities. Women play an important role by gardening, canning, and drying vegetables; earning money to buy food; cooking; and feeding family, friends, and neighbors on ordinary and festive occasions. They use food to solder or break relationships and to express contrasting feelings of harmony and generosity, or enmity and envy. The interviews in this book reveal that these Mexicanas are resourceful providers whose food work contributes to cultural survival. “An important contribution to Mexican American culture.” ―Oral History Review “Counihan’s book is well written and will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers . . . I would recommend this book to those whose interests lie in foodways, gender studies, ethnography and folklore. A Tortilla is Like Life would be a good addition to any reading list, and a beneficial resource for those who desire to understand the complex associations of gender, food, culture and ethnicity.” —Digest: A Journal of Foodways and Culture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope.” – Martin Luther King Jr. The odds were stacked against me from the start. Raised in poverty with a father who rejected his children, my teachers and the police were convinced I had no future and would wind up in prison. As I battled addiction and depression and dabbled with crime, all the while haunted by defeat, my path seemed set. But God had other plans, and over time, he turned every stumbling block that had been thrown my way into a stepping stone toward success. This raw, real story follows an underdog on an unbelievable journey from the streets to the pulpit. From divorce and adultery to burnout and suicide. From total bankruptcy to millionaire success. Stumbling Blocks to Stepping Stones is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. More than a memoir, it’s an inspirational roadmap for getting up after life knocks you down. It also proves that circumstances don’t define you and that with faith, anything is possible. If you’re facing what seems like insurmountable odds, this book will encourage you to keep going. If you need hope to defeat the voices of discouragement, this motivational true story shows it’s never too late to turn any stumbling block into a stepping stone that will lead you toward peace, happiness, and fulfillment. No matter how far down you are, a greater power is at work that can lift you higher than you ever imagined. “When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Download or read book An Unsuspecting Trap written by George E. Buttner and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An Unsuspecting Trap" is a compelling and candid account of the author's struggles with alcoholism and his exploration of the events that led him down a path of self-destruction. At his mother's funeral, George flashes back to the abuse, abandonment, and early frustrations that impoverished his personal growth and kept him imprisoned by his past for most of his adult life. The disparagement and lack of guidance that characterized his early years led to his truancy, low self-worth, a dramatic near-death experience in the Navy, and a long and agonizing bout with alcoholism. However, this story is not about one child being battered or even the drunkenness that followed, but rather the human heart. Not knowing why, but knowing just the same, it is about a child's resourceful spirit searching for its place in the sun. It is about freeing whatever is good from the wreckage of my broken dreams. Wishing for some of them to come true, it is about a chance at having a hopeful future, of being restored to full humanity, and yes, most of all, it is about the necessary conviction that in sharing these things with others, life will have peaceful promise for our children in the shrinking fast changing world we know today.

Download or read book Taste of War written by Lizzie Collingham and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of 2012 Food, and in particular the lack of it, was central to the experience of World War II. In this richly detailed and engaging history, Lizzie Collingham establishes how control of food and its production is crucial to total war. How were the imperial ambitions of Germany and Japan - ambitions which sowed the seeds of war - informed by a desire for self-sufficiency in food production? How was the outcome of the war affected by the decisions that the Allies and the Axis took over how to feed their troops? And how did the distinctive ideologies of the different combatant countries determine their attitudes towards those they had to feed? Tracing the interaction between food and strategy, on both the military and home fronts, this gripping, original account demonstrates how the issue of access to food was a driving force within Nazi policy and contributed to the decision to murder hundreds of thousands of 'useless eaters' in Europe. Focusing on both the winners and losers in the battle for food, The Taste of War brings to light the striking fact that war-related hunger and famine was not only caused by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, but was also the result of Allied mismanagement and neglect, particularly in India, Africa and China. American dominance both during and after the war was not only a result of the United States' immense industrial production but also of its abundance of food. This book traces the establishment of a global pattern of food production and distribution and shows how the war subsequently promoted the pervasive influence of American food habits and tastes in the post-war world. A work of great scope, The Taste of War connects the broad sweep of history to its intimate impact upon the lives of individuals.
