Book A Dictionary of Anglo American Proverbs Proverbial Phrases Found in Literary Sources of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book A Dictionary of Anglo American Proverbs Proverbial Phrases Found in Literary Sources of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by George B. Bryan and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Dictionary of Anglo-American Proverbs & Proverbial Phrases Found in Literary Sources of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries is a unique collection of proverbial language found in literary contexts. It includes proverbial materials from a multitude of plays, (auto)biographies of well-known actors like Britain's Laurence Olivier, songs by William S. Gilbert or Lorenz Hart, and American crime stories by Leslie Charteris. Other authors represented in the dictionary are Horatio Alger, Margery Allingham, Samuel Beckett, Lewis Carroll, Raymond Chandler, Benjamin Disraeli, Edward Eggleston, Hamlin Garland, Graham Greene, Thomas C. Haliburton, Bret Harte, Aldous Huxley, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, George Orwell, Eden Phillpotts, John B. Priestley, Carl Sandburg, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Jesse Stuart, Oscar Wilde, and more. Many lesser-known dramatists, songwriters, and novelists are included as well, making the contextualized texts to a considerable degree representative of the proverbial language of the past two centuries. While the collection contains a proverbial treasure trove for paremiographers and paremiologists alike, it also presents general readers interested in folkloric, linguistic, cultural, and historical phenomena with an accessible and enjoyable selection of proverbs and proverbial phrases.

Book excerpt: A Story about Schizoaffective and Alcohol Addiction is a true account of my struggle with schizophrenia and bipolar illness. It has been a life of acting sane and medicating with alcohol. I usually tell people that I went on a twelve-year drunk. It was only after I got sober, seventeen years ago, at a treatment center, that the mania began to show. I was actually hypomanic and functional at work until 1999. By this time, I had long sold the van, and was finally faced with homelessness. I was actively psychotic for four years and was hospitalized four times. I am currently in remission, but I have to be careful. This is my prescription: 1) take your medication, 2) see a psychiatrist, 3) see a therapist, 4) dont drink or drug, 5) work on your self every day. It is reported that one in two hundred people have schizoaffective disorder. Probably half are addicted to alcohol or drugs. Little is known about this disorder and people dont like to talk about it. Rather than this approach, I am exposing my life to provide insight and reduce stigma of all people who are afflicted by this devastating illness.

For the past two years, New York City high school students have weathered an adolescence shaped by an ongoing global pandemic. Throughout it all, they have found new ways to build community and take root. Roots allow for living beings to journey into our past and forward into the future, toward and away from home, and enable us to withstand the storms that invariably pass through. In short stories, personal essays, poetry, and more, the students reflect on endurance, change, and growth. For twenty-five years, Girls Write Now has been amplifying transformative stories that break down the barriers of gender, race, age and poverty. In addition to being the first writing and mentoring organization of its kind, Girls Write Now continually ranks among the top programs nationwide for driving social-emotional growth for youth. The nationally award-winning nonprofit mentors the next generation of female and gender expansive writers and leaders who are shaping culture, impacting businesses and creating change.
