Download or read book Theatrical Therapeutic Interventions in Cameroon written by Paul Animbom and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2023-10-22 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre use in therapeutic settings is more relevant now in Cameroon than ever. The incessant hike in crises leaves many in difficult mental health conditions that the available modern treatment facilities cannot fully address. Other alternatives can therefore be used to address these and this book looks at those related to theatre. The focus here is on using theatre techniques in therapeutic contexts either directly or indirectly through cross-examination of theatre productions and performative healing rites. Major therapeutic uses of theatre in Cameroon are discussed with a special focus on theatre for development, community theatre, theatre of the oppressed, and traditional healing ritual practices. In all these forms, therapeutic aspects of dramatic art are fore-grounded and developed to their fullest potential. The boundary separating these genres (western and Cameroonian) is narrow compared to their similarities. This examination portrays a Cameroonian model of theatre in health aimed at addressing mental health. As a model, it considers the sociocultural specificities of the participants who combine theatrical elements with health and communication to achieve wellbeing in a collective process. Theatre as a result of this serves as an ideal therapeutic modality wherein individuals and society get rid of their painful memories and thinking, and become involved in a healing process wherein, theatre acts as a powerful catalyst for behavioural change both on individual and community bases.
Download or read book An Epidemic of Absence written by Moises Velasquez-Manoff and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it is asthma, food or pollen allergies, type-1 diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or Crohn's disease, everyone knows someone who suffers from an allergic or autoimmune disorder. And if it appears that the prevalence of these maladies has increased recently, that's because it has--to levels never before seen in human history. These days no fewer than one in fiv, and likely more, Americans suffer from one of these ailments. We seem newly, and bafflingly, vulnerable to immune system malfunction. Why? Science writer Moises Velasquez-Manoff explains the latest thinking about this problem and explores the remarkable new treatments in the works. In the past 150 years, improved sanitation, water treatment, and the advent of vaccines and antibiotics have saved countless lives, nearly eradicating diseases that had plagued humanity for millennia. But now, a growing body of evidence suggests that the very steps we took to combat infections also eliminated organisms that kept our bodies in balance. The idea that we have systematically cleaned ourselves to illness challenges deeply entrenched notions about the value of societal hygiene and the harmful nature of microbes. Yet scientists investigating the rampant immune dysfunction in the developed world have inevitably arrived at this conclusion. To address this global "epidemic of absence," they must restore the human ecosystem.

This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to come to Europe with his family, the married Johnny, father of two children, develops a perfidious plan that looks worldwide for its equal. Now he has found the white woman and married her. The first part of his plan works: He is in Europe. But how can he bring his alleged sister there too? The resourceful Johnny finds the solution in the brother of his new, white wife. Volume 3 tells of the perfidious execution of his plan and how he raves about his “sister” to his brother-in-law for so long that said brother-in-law travels to Cameroon, falls in love with her, marries her and brings her to Europe. The four live together with the children in a family house – a Ménage à quatre, that the two white siblings know nothing off until the third part of his plan works. Volume 3 tells of the difficulties of Afro-European relationships in Europe in a way that they also happen in reality. Difficulties that cause Afro-European relationships to fail and break people. It is often very painful when telenovela-love ends and the reality of every-day-love begins. Afro-European relationships are presented, including cliches, realistically, like never before the case. The reader experiences an Afro-European relationship within their European culture with all its cliches and misunderstandings. You will also learn of the everyday fight of Africans in a society, in which racism is not always called racism, even within relationships. This trilogy is able like seldomly another book before it to take the reader deeply into a magical, African world full of adventures, into an unknown, almost mystical culture with it easy way of living and its many helpful wisdoms. A world, where clocks run into a different direction and then everything goes forwards.
Download or read book Critical Perspectives on Cameroon Writing written by Hansel Ndumbe Eyoh and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume brings together a very rich harvest of forty critical essays on Cameroon literature by Cameroon literary scholars. The book is the result of the Second Conference on Cameroon Literature which took place at the University of Buea in 1994. The Buea conference was motivated by a determination to look at Cameroon literature straight into its face and criticize it using literary criteria of the strictest kind. Gone were the times when the criticism was complacent because it was believed that a nascent literature could easily be stifled by application of rather strict cannons of literary criticism. Both writers and critics had a lot to say. Subjects dealt with ranged from general topics on literature, survival and national identity, through specialized articles on prose, poetry, drama, translation, language, folklore, children's literature, Journalism and politics. It is the hope of the volume editors that the publication of these papers will instigate the kind of actions that were recommended and that the prolific nature of Cameroon literature will equally give rise to a prolific and robust criticism.
Download or read book Bipolar Faith written by Monica A. Coleman and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcome with mental anguish, Monica A. Coleman's great-grandfather had his two young sons pull the chair out from beneath him when he hanged himself. That noose remained tied to a rafter in the shed, where it hung above the heads of his eight children who played there for years to come. As it had for generations before her, a heaviness hung over Monica throughout her young life. As an adult, this rising star in the academy saw career successes often fueled by the modulated highs of undiagnosed Bipolar II Disorder, as she hid deep depression that even her doctors skimmed past in disbelief. Serendipitous encounters with Black intellectuals like Henry Louis Gates Jr., Angela Davis, and Renita Weems were countered by long nights of stark loneliness. Only as Coleman began to face her illness was she able to live honestly and faithfully in the world. And in the process, she discovered a new and liberating vision of God. Written in crackling prose, Monica's spiritual autobiography examines her long dance with trauma, depression, and the threat of death in light of the legacies of slavery, war, sharecropping, poverty, and alcoholism that masked her family history of mental illness for generations.
Download or read book Confrontations written by Simone Atangana Bekono and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold, unsettling, surprisingly tender debut novel for readers of Jesmyn Ward and Nightcrawling. Salomé Atabong is the sixteen-year-old daughter of a Cameroonian father and a Dutch mother, living in the Netherlands. She arrives at a juvenile detention center to start a six-month sentence for a violent crime, which she did commit but does not regret. Expected to visit with a racist psychologist and perform her apologies, Salomé refuses to atone. But even if Salomé could get home, it would be no refuge: her father has recently been diagnosed with liver cancer, and her elder sister Miriam's main preoccupation is to get out of the village as soon as possible. After months in the prison system, she realizes she must come to terms with the real reason behind her rage. Raw and unsentimental yet lyrical, Confrontations captures the paradoxical demands society makes on Black women, the way communities, schools, and the prison system perpetuate racism, and the cost of Black female defiance.

Download or read book Mothers on the Move written by Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massive scale and complexity of international migration today tends to obscure the nuanced ways migrant families seek a sense of belonging. In this book, Pamela Feldman-Savelsberg takes readers back and forth between Cameroon and Germany to explore how migrant mothers—through the careful and at times difficult management of relationships—juggle belonging in multiple places at once: their new country, their old country, and the diasporic community that bridges them. Feldman-Savelsberg introduces readers to several Cameroonian mothers, each with her own unique history, concerns, and voice. Through scenes of their lives—at a hometown association’s year-end party, a celebration for a new baby, a visit to the Foreigners’ Office, and many others—as well as the stories they tell one another, Feldman-Savelsberg enlivens our thinking about migrants’ lives and the networks and repertoires that they draw on to find stability and, ultimately, belonging. Placing women’s individual voices within international social contexts, this book unveils new, intimate links between the geographical and the generational as they intersect in the dreams, frustrations, uncertainties, and resolve of strong women holding families together across continents.
Download or read book Childhood in African Literature written by Eldred D. Jones and published by Africa World Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "African authors have consistently returned to childhood to find their personal as well as their racial roots. Far from being merely nostalgic yearnings for a lost paradise, many of the treatments of childhood as shown in articles in this issue have exposed a grim reality of cruelty, harshness, parental (particularly paternal) egocentrism and extraordinary bruisings of the vulnerable child psyche. Camara Laye may have portrayed a paradise state but Yvonne Vera has treated one of the cruelest features of childhood anywhere. African authors generally have been sternly responsible in their portrayal of childhood." -- Publisher's description
