Download or read book India written by Aline Dobbie and published by Melrose Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her infancy the author has been fascinated by that most magnificent and elusive of beasts, the tiger. Her second book on India, [this] is a personal account of her pilgramage to India's great wildlife parks and tiger sanctuaries ... and provides a comprehensive study of Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Corbett Tiger Reserves as well as detailed backgrounds to Nagarahole, Kaziranga, Pench, Bharatpur and Gir National Park, home of the rare Asiatic Lion ... In addition, the author highlights the continuing threat to India's tigers and the on-going efforts to protect them ... Dobbie is a Hindi speaker and uses her many contacts and childhood reminiscences to great effect throughout this book. The reader will also find valuable information on some of India's historical gems such as Gwalior, Orchha, Sonagiri, Mandu, Sanchi and Bhimbetka as well as the hill station of Nainital. India: The Tiger's Roar is certainly not a travel guide, nor a guide to the wildlife of India, although it is an excellent source of information on both subjects. Instead it is a heady blend of travelogue and personal insight, cultural and political philosophy, anecdotes, cautionary tales, historical and religious references and a thesis on the state of Indian wildlife conservation.
Download or read book Daughters of Parvati written by Sarah Pinto and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her role as devoted wife, the Hindu goddess Parvati is the divine embodiment of viraha, the agony of separation from one's beloved, a form of love that is also intense suffering. These contradictory emotions reflect the overlapping dissolutions of love, family, and mental health explored by Sarah Pinto in this visceral ethnography. Daughters of Parvati centers on the lives of women in different settings of psychiatric care in northern India, particularly the contrasting environments of a private mental health clinic and a wing of a government hospital. Through an anthropological consideration of modern medicine in a nonwestern setting, Pinto challenges the dominant framework for addressing crises such as long-term involuntary commitment, poor treatment in homes, scarcity of licensed practitioners, heavy use of pharmaceuticals, and the ways psychiatry may reproduce constraining social conditions. Inflected by the author's own experience of separation and single motherhood during her fieldwork, Daughters of Parvati urges us to think about the ways women bear the consequences of the vulnerabilities of love and family in their minds, bodies, and social worlds.

Book excerpt: “This book is a chance to get a fix on some of India’s best crime writers” (The Globe and Mail, Toronto). These fourteen original stories, from some of India’s most outstanding literary talents, take you into a world of sex in parks, male prostitution, and vigilante rickshaw drivers. Set in a city plagued by religious riots, soulless corporate dons, and murderous servants, this collection offers bone-chilling, mesmerizing take on the country’s chaotic capital, where opulence and poverty clash, and old-world values and the information age wage a constant battle. Brand new stories by Irwin Allan Sealy, Omair Ahmad, Radhika Jha, Ruchir Joshi, Nalinaksha Bhattacharya, Meera Nair, Siddharth Chowdhury, Mohan Sikka, Palash Krishna Mehrotra, Hartosh Singh Bal, Hirsh Sawhney, Tabish Khair, Uday Prakash, and Manjula Padmanabhan. “Like the rest of this superb series (Brooklyn Noir, L.A. Noir, Toronto Noir, etc.), we are introduced to the city by stories set in locations iconic to the city. In the case of Delhi, that means we go to some very dark spots indeed.” —The Globe and Mail (Toronto) “Delhi Noir has no lack of true-to-life characters getting twisted, mangled and discarded. Which is why, like the proverbial train wreck, even as you cringe, you won’t be able to look away.” —San Francisco Chronicle

Book excerpt: **Selected for Doody's Core Titles® 2024 in Pharmacology** Master an understanding of pharmacology — and apply that understanding to nursing practice! With an engaging approach that actually makes learning nursing pharmacology enjoyable, Lehne's Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 12th Edition makes it easier to understand difficult pharmacologic principles and the clinical use of drugs. The book discusses physiology and pathophysiology for each of the major drug families, using drug prototypes to simplify learning.
