Book excerpt: A dazzling fiction debut from the author of Mama’s Girl, Miss Black America is the warm and tender story of Angela, a young girl growing up in 1970s Brooklyn. Angela goes to school one ordinary day and returns home to find her glamorous and fiercely independent mother gone. Her magician father, Teddo, left to raise Angela alone, insists on keeping Melanie’s disappearance shrouded in mystery. As Angela grows to womanhood and struggles to understand her mother’s motivation for escaping the bonds of her family, she wryly observes, “My father was a magician, but my mother was the real Houdini.” A universal story that is both finely tuned and elegant, Miss Black America captures the intricacies, pleasures, contradictions, and complexities at the heart of every family. Spare and finely told, this novel will seep beneath your skin and stay with you long after the last page has been turned.

Book Laughing on the Way to Heaven

Download or read book Laughing on the Way to Heaven written by Don Waddell and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don has lots of opinions: On being a buffoon: I hate being a buffoon, but it seems like I'm always messing up. Not long ago I got in the car with my wife to run some errands. I took the TV remote with me just in case I had to make a cell phone call. Nancy made fun of me, and I tried to use the mute button on her, but it didn't work. On his 37th Anniversary: "We returned home and wandered off to bed at 10:00. Nancy donned her "Born to Sleep" PJs and I was asleep before my head hit the pillow. When we were newly married this is not the way we would have anticipated our 37th anniversary ending, but in 2004 it was just fine. So much for romance. It's still there; it's just different. On fasting: Fasting is a fundamental Christian practice, and it is mentioned 33 times in the Bible. Now, let me ask a question. When was the last time you heard a sermon on the subject of fasting? You'll hear a hundred sermons on eschatology, a thousand on tithing or how many angels you can stack on the head of a pin before a preacher will suggest a Christian forego his or her staple of donuts, fried chicken or baked beans. Actually, I don't mind fasting; it's just the hunger I object to. On remodeling the house: "What on earth do we need a new toilet for?" I protested. Nancy's response was: "The old toilet was the wrong shade of white." The wrong shade of white?! You got to be kidding me! Our 401K is in the toilet due to the economy, and now I'm spending my kid's inheritance replacing a toilet that is the improper shade of white!!

Download or read book Remote written by David Shields and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this truly one-of-a-kind book, the author/narrator—a representative, in extremis, of contemporary American obsession with beauty, celebrity, transmitted image—finds himself suspended, fascinated, in the remoteness of our wall-to-wall mediascape. It is a remoteness that both perplexes and enthralls him. Through dazzling sleight of hand in which the public becomes private and the private becomes public, the entire book—clicking from confession to family-album photograph to family chronicle to sexual fantasy to pseudo-scholarly footnote to reportage to personal essay to stand-up comedy to cultural criticism to literary criticism to film criticism to prose-poem to litany to outtake —becomes both an anatomy of American culture and a searing self-portrait. David Shields reads his own life—reads our life—as if it were an allegory about remoteness and finds persuasive, hilarious, heartbreaking evidence wherever he goes. Winner of the PEN / Revson Award?

Book Driving Force

Book excerpt: The McLaughlin family transformed the face of Canada, first with the horse-drawn carriage and then with the motor car. The McLaughlin Motor Car Company, created in 1907, manufactured the closest thing to a Canadian car – the much-loved McLaughlin Buick. This is the first book to chronicle the life of this influential family and, in particular, the dynamic entrepreneur and tycoon, Sam McLaughlin. Through the lens of Sam’s achievements, Robertson covers a wide range of social history: the fever of invention at the turn of the century, rum-running, the invention of Canada Dry ginger ale, the early unstable history of GM in the US, the Autopact of 1965, and much, much more. Part business story, part social history, Driving Force is an exciting approach to biography and to the complex drama surrounding the men who founded what became General Motors of Canada.

Book The Liebold Protocol a Mattie McGary Winston Churchill 1930 s Adventure

Download or read book The Liebold Protocol a Mattie McGary Winston Churchill 1930 s Adventure written by Michael McMenamin and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her latest adventure, The Liebold Protocol, Winston Churchill’s Scottish goddaughter, Mattie McGary, the adventure-seeking Hearst photojournalist, reluctantly returns to Nazi Germany in the summer of 1934 and once again finds herself in deadly peril in a gangster state where widespread kidnappings and ransoms by the SA and SS are sanctioned by the new Nazi government. It didn’t begin that way. At Churchill’s suggestion, Mattie initially investigates one of the best-kept secrets of the Great War—that in 1915, facilitated by a sinister German-American agent working for Henry Ford, British Empire and Imperial German officials essentially committed treason by agreeing Britain would sell raw rubber to Germany in exchange for it selling precision optical equipment to Britain. Why? To keep the war going and the profits flowing. After Mattie interviews Ford’s German-American go-between, however, agents of Scotland Yard’s Special Branch are sent by Churchill’s political opponents in the British government to rough her up and warn her she will be prosecuted under the Official Secrets Act unless she backs off the story. Left no choice, Mattie sets out for Germany to investigate the story from the German side and to interview the German nobleman who negotiated the optics for rubber deal with the British. Once In Germany, however, Mattie lands right in the middle of a potential civil war between the SA Brown Shirts of Ernst Rohm who want a true socialist ‘second revolution’ to follow Hitler’s stunning first revolution in 1933 and Adolf Hitler who believes one revolution is enough. Mattie learns that Hitler has ordered his SS to assassinate all the senior leadership of Ernst Rohm’s SA Brown Shirts as well as other political enemies on Saturday 30 June, an event known to History as ‘The Night of the Long Knives’. Mattie soon learns she is threatened from two sides and must flee Germany to save her life. Not only does the German-American working for Henry Ford want her story on the Great War optics for rubber treason killed, he wants her dead along with it. Worse, Mattie’s nemesis, the ‘Blond Beast’ of the SS, Reinhard Heydrich, is in charge of Hitler’s ‘Night of the Long Knives’ purge and he’s secretly put her name on his list of targets… The McMenamin writing teams are award-winning, and one should not expect anything different from The Liebold Protocol. Three-Time Grand Prize Winner Fiction, Next Generation Indie Book Awards. Three-Time Thriller/Suspense Book of the Year, ForeWord Reviews. Two-Time Historical Fiction Book of the Year, ForeWord Reviews. Michael McMenamin is the co-author with his son Patrick of the first five award-winning 1930s era historical novels featuring Winston Churchill and his fictional Scottish goddaughter, the adventure-seeking Hearst photojournalist Mattie McGary. Book Doris Day and my search for relatives

Download or read book Doris Day and my search for relatives written by Marianne E. Meyer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery of life puzzles all of us. Marianne Meyer had her first out-of-body experience at age two. Not being able to make herself understood led to a seeker's life. The confusing n o t h i n g called time drifts us relentless toward the end. As long as the brain makes connections we can leap back and forth in time. From infancy to middle age and back, the author scavenges tidbits from those times and transfers them to the presence. Shortly after moving from Frankfurt to L. A., Marianne met her great-grandfather on a higher level of consciousness. She was told he had migrated to USA, took on the last name Victor and lived in the Carmel area. He had left his homeland after creating the child of love on Christmas 1901. Wilhelmina Meckes was married in a hurry, in vindication of honor, and on October 5, Maria Hörr was born as a credited 7 month child. A few years ago, Marianne learned about her mother's family relationship with the Carmel resident Doris Day! Both their grandmothers descended from J. J. Mann and M. E. Nollert and grew up in Neckarhäuserhof, a tiny village near Heidelberg. The synchronicity of both her parents' relatives living in Carmel Mrs. Meyer views as an appeal to go forward with searching for her father's family members. She still has a clear vision of her incorporeal ancestor. Will she find a picture of him in photo albums of a Victor family living in or near Carmel? Enthralling, Marianne portrays her exciting life in India, USA, South Pacific, Africa and Europe. Proving prophecy, past lives and synchronizes, Dr. Meyer presents metaphysics as the true science and shows how she heals herself and her pets. She also uncovers how she cracks the mysterious water code via exploring water crystal photos. Marianne wishes men to fast progress on the way of knowledge. That would be likely if scientists would go out on a limb, rid themselves of blinders and examine life without preconceptions just like children. She is inspired by a pioneering spirit and a passionate dedication on the well-being of the people and the animals. Therefore, 50 cents of each sold copy goes to DDAF and two pounds.

Our House is Cathy Woodman's honest and hilarious novel, perfect for fans of Carole Matthews and Lucy Diamond. 'A cast of diverse characters that grow on you. For a vet, Woodman knows a lot about human nature' - Nottingham Evening Post Sadie Keith doesn't have it all, but she's proud of what she's got: two gorgeous children, a challenging career as a magic operative (that's a clown to you and me) and a cleavage that has, so far, pluckily resisted the forces of age, twin babies and gravity. When Sadie goes to bed (alone) she dreams about two things - a night of passion before she forgets what it feels like, and making enough money to hang up her red nose for good. So when she sees a dilapidated house on the market, Sadie has a brainwave. Why not buy the property, do it up and sell it on? If the people on the telly can do it, so can she. All she needs is a builder. With his tight jeans, tanned torso and tools at the ready, Gareth Bryant seems the perfect choice. What's more, he's wild about Sadie. But as the money runs out, the rain runs in and the kids run riot, Sadie wonders if she's fallen for the wrong kind of cowboy. What readers are saying about Our House: 'Excellent story teller - makes you laugh out loud too' 'Absolutely loved it. Very easy to read and hard to put down'
