Egli lascia la sua corvetta nel porto come appoggio alle navi americane e con una lancia tenta di raggiungere il forto per liberare la fanciulla. Lo accompagnano, nell'audace impresa, due singoli personaggi: il mastro d'equipaggio Testa di Pietra, un bretone tutto d'un pezzo e rotto a tutte le astuzie, e il giovane gabbiere Piccolo Flocco. Nonostante l'infuriare dell'assedio William Mac-Lellan sa che il momento è propizio per passare inosservato. Gli inglesi sono impegnati a respingere il nemico e a mantenere il controllo della popolazione che minaccia di sollevarsi trovandosi con poco cibo e scarsa acqua. Ma, come sempre avviene nei romanzi di Emilio Salgari, ogni progetto ha i suoi imprevisti. L'impresa, contrastata da circostanze altramente drammatiche, risospinge l'avventura salgariana in alto mare, in una guerra corsara contro navi inglesi che tentano di forzare il blocco. Mentre gli insorti americani riescono vittoriosi (il presidio inglese di Boston è infatti costretto ad arrendersi) meno felice è l'epilogo della vicenda privata di William Mac-Lellan. Il marchese d'Halifax sembra vincere e con la sua prigioniera scompare all'orizzonte con una veloce fregata. Ma la battaglia finale è solo rimandata al secondo libro del ciclo: La crociera della Tuonante.

Ma una nave spagnola distrugge dopo cinque anni la loro base e i pochi che riescono a sopravvivere trovano un rifugio all'isola della Tortuga facendone la base di partenza per tutte le loro spedizioni. Gli abitanti di Santo Domingo però, vedendo che il loro commercio è in pericolo, dopo un attacco riescono a sconfiggerli e ad allontanarli. Un giorno però, i bucanieri e i filibustieri riescono a far ritorno all'isola. Arriva intanto alla Tortuga un nobile italiano circondato dal mistero, un certo Emilio signore di Ventimiglia, Valpenta e Roccabruna. Durante un assedio in Europa, durante la guerra fra Francia e Spagna, gli spagnoli tagliata la ritirata comprano un duca fiammingo, Van Guld, ordinandogli di tradire i superstiti italo-francesi rifugiatisi in una rocca. Riesce nel suo malvagio piano, ma uccide il fratello maggiore di Emilio, che, dopo essersi miracolosamente salvato dalla carneficina degli Spagnoli, per vendicarsi lo insegue nei Caraibi dove lui e i suoi due fratelli diventano il Corsaro Nero, Rosso e Verde(nero). Il romanzo ha inizio quando due filibustieri, Carmaux e Van Stiller, vengono ripescati dalla "Folgore", nave filibustiera appartenente a Emilio di Roccabruna, conte di Valpenta e di Ventimiglia, conosciuto come il Corsaro Nero. Una volta a bordo, i due raccontano al terribile comandante che suo fratello, Enrico di Ventimiglia conosciuto come il Corsaro Rosso era stato impiccato nella piazza di Maracaibo per ordine di Van Guld, governatore della città. Emilio decide così di recarsi a Maracaibo per sottrarre il cadavere del fratello e, reclutati Carmaux e Van Stiller, affida il comando della nave a Morgan, suo luogotenente. Dopo aver catturato una guardia spagnola e guadagnato l'aiuto di Moko, un africano eremita, i filibustieri giungono aMaracaibo. Dopo numerose avventure il Corsaro riesce a rapire la salma del fratello e a rimbarcarsi sulla Folgoredove, dopo aver celebrato il funerale del fratello, giura solennemente che sterminerà Van Guld e tutta la sua famiglia. Sulla strada del ritorno per la Tortuga, i filibustieri assaltano una nave spagnola che trasporta una bionda fanciulla che si fa chiamare Honorata Willerman, duchessa di Weltrendrem, di cui Emilio si innamora, ricambiato. Dopo essersi imbattuti in un terribile uragano la nave giunge finalmente alla Tortuga. Qui il racconto s'interrompe e l'autore introduce una parentesi storica, citando le imprese di grandi filibustieri realmente esistiti e spiegando cosa siano la filibusteria e la bucaneria. Ha poi inizio il racconto della spedizione per assalire Maracaibo. La caccia di Emilio lo porta, insieme a Carmaux, Wan Stiller, Moko e il soldato che avevano catturato poco tempo prima, promosso a guida del drappello, nella foresta vergine. Lì il gruppo incontrerà coguari e puzzole, vampiri, sabbie mobili e antropofagi. Giunti quasi alla meta, il soldato e Moko si fermano, mentre i tre filibustieri proseguono la caccia. Seguirà uno scontro contro le forze di Van Guld e l'assalto a Gibraltar. Finite queste avventure pericolose, il Corsaro scoprirà che Honorata è in realtà la figlia di Van Guld e, combattuto tra onore e amore, farà imbarcare la giovane su una scialuppa e l'abbandonerà in mare con enorme dolore. Il romanzo si conclude con Carmaux che dice al suo amico Wan Stiller: «Guarda lassù! Il Corsaro Nero piange».

Serving as a vital component of the main Ottoman fleet, the Barbary pirates also conducted independent raids of Christian ships and territory. While their activities declined after 1700, Jamieson reveals that it was only in the early nineteenth century that Europe and the United States finally curtailed the Barbary menace, a fight that culminated in the French conquest of Algiers in 1830. Book excerpt: In the century after 1530 the empires of the Habsburgs of Spain and the Ottoman Turks fought a maritime war that seemed destined to lead nowhere:: lasting peace was as unlikely as final triumph, in part because the salient feature of this conflict was a violent form of piracy practiced by the 'corsairs' of North African and Malta. It was fundamentally a war of unequal means, since the Habsburgs of Spain had too few good warships and the Ottomans too many bad ones. Christendom and Islam engaged in a war fought largely through the exercise of private violence: the Hospitaller Knights of Malta and ghazi captains of North Africa succeeded in imposing their crusading ethos on the Mediterranean. If a degree of futility loomed over these campaigns, it was nevertheless true that the Mediterranean witnessed a sustained conflict which in scale and intensity was far greater than that of any contemporary form of warfare at sea. Moreover the sea was never abandoned as, until at least 1620, large galley fleets continued to patrol the inland sea. The raiding methods employed by Elizabethan 'seadogs' like Sir Francis Drake would certainly not have worked in this theatre of arms, as the defences in Italy and North Africa were much more formidable than those of the Atlantic. Phillip Williams begins with a detailed examination of the oared warships used in these campaigns. He then explores the structures of political and military organization and the role of geography and the environment in shaping the fighting; stressing that the Italian territories were of vital significance to the Habsburgs of Spain. He considers the cultural and historical outlook of protagonists such as the Habsburg rulers Charles V and Philip II and the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, examining the extent to which the dictates of prudence triumphed over ideals of performing 'the service of God'. Providing a unique perspective on early modern maritime conflict, this book will be essential reading for all students and researchers of Mediterranean History and the early modern world.

Nonostante il tradimento della guida Davis e tante insidie, Testa di Pietra è sempre all'altezza della situazione; grazie alla sua forza riesce a sconfiggere in un duello a colpi d'ascia il capo di una tribù indiana e diventa così nientemeno che grande "sakem"! È in questa veste che incontra il suo amato baronetto William Mac-Lellan, inviato da Washington a controllare la situazione. Quest'ultimo viene anche informato della presenza molto vicina del fratellastro, il pericoloso rivale marchese d'Halifax. Infine nel castello del barone di Clairmont avviene lo scontro decisivo tra i due nobili scozzesi. La vittoria non può però che spettare al leale e generoso Mac-Lellan ed è con la morte del Marchese d'Halifax che si chiude definitivamente questo ciclo sullo fondo di un'altra vittoria: quella dell'indipendenza americana.

Its influence was significant both in the decline of Venice and in the shift of the economic hegemony of Europe. Professor Tenenti maintains that Venice is a fitting focus for study of this period, for the mediterranean became and increasingly a centre of European activity. On one side was Venice which, in spite of a huge navy and a still sizable merchant fleet, observed the strictest neutrality and sought only to protect her trade. On the other were potentially or openly hostile navies, which clashed with one another and frequently also with Venetian shipping. english and Dutch navies forced their way into the area by a combination of trade and piracy and established themselves in positions of great strength. Professor Tenenti analyzes the impact of northern piracy on the trade of the Venetian republic and her failure to resist this threat. During the early seventeenth century Venetian prosperity was irreparably damaged, not only by competition from the north, but also by a severe shipbuilding crisis. He suggests that Venice wa unable to adapt the organization, equipment and discipline of her navy to the changed conditions; for these were spheres in which her pride was particularly strong and tradition enduring. He describes the different types of pirates from the Barbary pirates, the Knights of Malta and the English corsairs to the Uscocchi, whom even sophisticated Venetians regarded as necromancers. The translation of this important work fo Venetian economic history makes a valuable addition to the books on the period available to English readers. Infatti, mentre la lotta infuriava tra la "Tuonante" e la fregata del Marchese d'Halifax, la bella nave del capitano William Mac-Lellan aveva ricevuto un grave danno: le era stato spezzato l'albero di trinchetto e quindi la sua corsa era stata interrotta e l'odiato marchese aveva potuto prendere il largo. La nave deve perciò tornare a Boston per le riparazioni, ma è di nuovo ben presto pronta a riprendere il mare e a dare battaglia. È pronta per la sua "crociera" ed è tanto più temuta per la presenza, a bordo, di un artigliere abilissimo, Mastro Testa di Pietra, sempre in compagnia del simpatico Piccolo Flocco. Postosi nuovamente sulle tracce del Marchese, riprende con lui la battaglia, furiosa e terribile. Sia la corvetta "Tuonante" che la fregata nemica si incagliano in banchi di sabbia e gli equipaggi si affidano a zattere di fortuna. Navi inglesi raccolgono il Marchese d'Halifax e Mary, che raggiungono così New-York, dove il fratellastro di Mac-Lellan è deciso ad organizzare il suo matrimonio con la fanciulla. L'astuto Testa di Pietra vigila e così il duello decisivo tra Mac-Lellan e il Marchese si svolge nientemeno che nella cappella sotterranea di una chiesa, interrompendo la cerimonia. Il libro si chiude con un affrettata conclusione in cui si accenna alle nozze tra il baronetto e la bella Mary, nello stesso giorno in cui il generale Washington vinse le armate inglesi comandate dal capitano Cadwallari sulla Delavara.
