Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something to Stand the Rain is a biographical memoir that celebrates the often unrecognized worth of individuals beneath the radar of fame. At a time in our nation when faith in its leadership is at a low ebb, the components of a good man are laid out for review before being illustrated in the life of a man named David Dionisi, someone who rose to wealth as corporate executive before surrendering it to lift up those less fortunate than himself. Youthful longing to be a paratrooper carries him beyond a pancake landing without benefit of parachute from which, miraculously, he walks away. Military service as an intelligence officer ends when conflicting with love for the woman he marries. Though he rises rocket-like in the corporate world, his affluence leaves him dissatisfied. Moved to overwhelming compassion by the suffering of the poor and needy, he decides to devote his savings and his talents to their aid. Among the benefactions born of the foundation he launches are an orphanage in Africaand a writing career. This emerges from realization that one of the most effective ways to lift the impoverished from their plight rests in the exposure of its unrecognized root causes.

This book is designed to answer the questions or give insight into the ways some of us had to think from the inside from a survival standpoint and for those on the outside that have the questions of where this type of thinking came from so they can understand what the problem really is while providing therapy for both sides as well as a potential solution for all. This is a platform for understanding the forced reality—that’s the fact that it takes a village to tend to this properly. So I’m taking this fight head-on.

Download or read book The Meaning of Soul written by Emily J. Lordi and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Meaning of Soul, Emily J. Lordi proposes a new understanding of this famously elusive concept. In the 1960s, Lordi argues, soul came to signify a cultural belief in black resilience, which was enacted through musical practices—inventive cover versions, falsetto vocals, ad-libs, and false endings. Through these soul techniques, artists such as Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Isaac Hayes, and Minnie Riperton performed virtuosic survivorship and thus helped to galvanize black communities in an era of peril and promise. Their soul legacies were later reanimated by such stars as Prince, Solange Knowles, and Flying Lotus. Breaking with prior understandings of soul as a vague masculinist political formation tethered to the Black Power movement, Lordi offers a vision of soul that foregrounds the intricacies of musical craft, the complex personal and social meanings of the music, the dynamic movement of soul across time, and the leading role played by black women in this musical-intellectual tradition.

Book excerpt: This is the late 1970s and ’80s as explained through the urgent and still-relevant songs of the Clash, the Specials, the Au Pairs, the Style Council, the Pet Shop Boys, and nearly four hundred other bands and solo artists. Each chapter presents a mixtape (or playlist) of songs related to an alarming feature of Thatcher’s Britain, followed by an analysis of the dialogue these artists created with the Thatcherite vision of British society. “Tell us the truth,” Sham 69 demanded, and pop music, however improbably, did. It’s a furious and sardonic account of dark times when pop music raised a dissenting fist against Thatcher’s fascist groove thing and made a glorious, boredom-smashing noise. Bookended with contributions by Dick Lucas and Boff Whalley as well as an annotated discography, The Fascist Groove Thing presents an original and polemical account of the era.

Book excerpt: Join award-winning queer Canadian author Giselle Renarde for a year's worth of music and memories. As we listen to songs from a variety of genres, Giselle shares anecdotes about growing up in the 80s, being a teen of the 90s, and listening to the radio on those long and lonely nights in her first apartment. Accompany Giselle on a musical journey as she revisits the days of her youth through song. From the introduction to Play It On My Radio: My name is Giselle and I'm your new best friend. Well, maybe not "best friend." A best friend usually listens in addition to talking, but that's not me. What I will do is be here every day to share whichever song pops into my head. Why? What's the point? Well, here's the thing: I'm a writer. It's a pretty lonely job. Over the years, I've become increasingly socially isolated and you know what? It sucks. It sucks bad. The truth of the matter is that a lot of us are socially isolated, these days. And not just older people—younger ones, too. There are "friendly visitor" programs for seniors, but those of us under 65 are kind of lost at sea. I speak from experience. If you need a no-pressure visit every day, let me be your friendly visitor. I'll bring a song—whichever song pops into my head, gets stuck in my head, or seems relevant to something that day. As a person with chronic depression, music has helped me more than anything. It's magic, I swear. I hope my little musical visits will give you something to look forward to every day, because they'll certainly do that for me.

Book Growing Up King

Download or read book Growing Up King written by Dexter Scott King and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the bestselling tradition of such family portraits as Brooke Hayward's Haywire and Christopher Dickey's Summer of Deliverance comes a disarmingly candid memoir from the youngest son of Martin Luther King, Jr. Dexter King was only seven when an assassin's bullet took his father's life, shattering the boy's childhood. And as he stumbled into adolescence, both the tragedy and the weight of living up to "the King legacy" would exact an additional toll. Challenged with undiagnosed A.D.D. and rocked once again by his grandmother's murder, King became emotionally isolated and, in his early 30s, sought answers from an inspiring source: the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr. Now, in this intimate portrait, Dexter King reveals for the first time what it was like growing up in the shadow of greatness, and how his father's lessons continue to inspire and inform his own ideas on race in America today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As recommended by USA Today and excerpted on Rolling Stone.com! More than forty years after breaking up, The Beatles remain the biggest-selling and most influential group in the history of popular music. Fans endlessly replay their songs, craving more, while thousands of cover versions of their songs have been recorded and performed. Band biographies, pop music histories, song books, and academic titles on the Fab Four clutter shelves. But never has there been a definitive guide to the finest songs of The Beatles after they called it quits. Still the Greatest is a love song to the songwriting and recording achievements of Paul, John, George, and Ringo after each struck out on his own. In this creative history, Jackson selects the best songs in each solo career and organizes them into fantasy albums they might have formed had the legendary group stayed together. This romp through the post–Beatles history of each artist delves into the circumstances behind the composition, recording, and reception of each work, offering a refreshing take on how spectacular much of The Beatles’ second act truly is. Jackson assesses the more than seventy albums and nine hundred songs the four collectively released, selecting the crème de la crème of their output. Still the Greatest brims with facts (release dates, writing and performing credits, and information about production techniques) and insightful analyses of the music and lyrics. In telling the stories behind the songs, Jackson recounts the remarkable influence the Post Fab Four continued to have long after the big split. Both a handy reference and an engrossing cover-to-cover read, Still the Greatest is an invaluable companion for those who thought it all ended with the 1970 album Let It Be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabotage and Silhouettes has a deeper meaning that just two words thrown together to form a creative alliteration. Each word holds a significant meaning in the title of this book. Sabotage is the deliberate damage, destruction, or obstruction of something. In this instance, it relates to my life, and possibly even parts of yours. The traumas that we go through, lead us to specific actions and emotions. When we feed into those emotions, we start to create chaos, sometimes intentionally and sometimes, unintentionally. Either way, we begin to self-sabotage. Whether we sabotage potential or existing relationships, important friendships, or even our own growth. We start to get in our own way. Many times, after the many losses I’ve gone through, I found myself sabotaging the very things that were sent to heal me. Silhouettes are dark shapes or outlines of someone or something against a lighter background. Our dark parts. Especially in times of anguish or hardship. Through traumas, everything goes dark. The silhouettes represent the dark parts of our lives, our mentality, our soul. Even with light all around, a silhouette will remain dark, and the details are impossible to make out. This is exactly how I felt through all my dark times. I wasn’t myself for months, maybe even a year or so, but the silhouettes hid the details in the dark while the light was still shining all around me. It made it hard for people to ‘see’ me. And even harder for me to ‘show’ myself to those around me. I shut down. And everything became dark.
