Download or read book The Nail written by Stephen Cottrell and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Lent book offers imaginative reflections on Christ's crucifixion. Each of the seven chapters is focused on a different key character, who describes his or her experience of the Passion. The nails used to crucify Christ are used as a jumping off point for their reflections. Each character considers the questions, 'who killed Christ' and 'who was responsible?' Each chapter includes a Biblical passage, a meditative hymn, a reflection from the point of view of the character, and a short prayer. The book finishes with practical suggestions on how the book can be used as a Lent study course. It is ideal for individual reflection or group study, and can also readily be adapted for use as a Good Friday liturgy.

Download or read book Gender Is a Choice written by Grace Alice Mukasa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Is a Choice is a remarkable book that thoughtfully demystifies gender discrimination. It shows the underlying causes of discrimination, which lie deep in our cultures. Based on the human rights perspective of equality and dignity, Ms. Mukasa reaffirms that we are all born equal, without gender bias or prejudice, and we all share a propensity to learn, grow, and maximize our innate potential to lead meaningful, happy lives. However, societies have views based on cultural norms, attitudes, and beliefs that lead to unequal gender relations of power. As a result, many women and girls suffer. This highly educational book highlights the key gender concepts and gives them meaning through a practical family portrait at the end. Ms. Mukasa decisively affirms that despite powerful socialization processes, gender injustice can be overcome. The key issue to transform is the traditional socialization process. The main tool is to create awareness of the embedded negative aspects concerning women’s and men’s relationships. It calls upon men and women to appreciate that the current gender relations of power are unnatural and unacceptable. They are man-made and can be dismantled using our agency to make the right choices. Women’s disempowerment can be disrupted, and gender justice can be promoted. This book is relevant to all people since gender discrimination is universal and has universally negative consequences. Gender discrimination must therefore be disrupted everywhere, every time, by everyone. However, Ms. Mukasa makes her own choice to focus on the African gender context and the audience whose culture she understands best.

Download or read book Vickie S Story written by John Sherman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction I still remember the first time I heard about Vickies stroke. My husband and I were on a mission trip in Florida, working with an international Bible translation team. Emails began to pop up on my computer screen with fragmentary pieces of information from home. Vickies dogs had been viciously attacked by neighborhood dogs and were in emergency surgery. Vickie asked us to pray for the recovery of her precious pets. Then the news got dramatically, unbelievably worse. Vickie herself had had a major stroke and the prognosis was not good, recovery uncertain. Information was suddenly sparse from the hospital as John and we (my husband and I) waited for the medical tests and for time to give us some idea of what was ahead for Vickie. It had been only the previous Sunday that John and Vickie had done another of their beautiful choral duets at our home church. It was less than six months since we had celebrated with John and Vickie at their wedding and reception. Vickie was too young to have a stroke. John and Vickie had just begun a new life together after suffering through broken relationships in both of their pasts. How could God allow such a thing to happen to such a couple? As I worked on the sermon I was to deliver back home the next Sunday, projected to be on the joy of the Lord, I was seized with doubts. Could I proclaim this joy with such a heavy heart? Could the congregation receive the promise of joy as we wept and waited and prayed? It was John Shermans blog that showed us the way. He began to chronicle the medical, emotional, and spiritual struggles that Vickie and he were experiencing, beginning that very first day. He drew on his deep knowledge of the scriptures. As time passed and events unfolded, John listened and considered and reflected on the painful times and the hopeful times, the frustrations with medical and insurance problems as well as the unexpected joys of love and service received from friends and hospital staff. His words and Vickies indomitable spirit through very difficult circumstances drew an ever-increasing Facebook audience, with dozens of people near and far uplifted and encouraged by their endurance and trust in the Lord. Johns eloquence in expressing all of these realities was something seldom seen on social media, something that seemed truly inspired by the Holy Spirit. I recommend John and Vickies story for your reading. If youre dealing with a similar medical issue, youll find it informative as well as encouraging. If youre just trying to live a joyful and victorious life, youll be uplifted and inspired by one couples overcoming journey toward recovery and restoration. My favorite text about joy comes from Nehemiah 8:10: Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. At the time this was written, the city of Jerusalem was in ruins and enemies were encircling and numerous. Nehemiah helped the people understand that when times were tough, those were the times they needed joy the most. John and Vickies story is ultimately a story of finding sustaining strength through experiencing the joy of the Lords promises and presence. Thats a message all of us need to hear. In Christ, Rev. Marie B. Allen Congregational Life and Discipleship Pastor New Town United Methodist Church Williamsburg, Virginia Friends, I know many of you are asleep now. Vickie has had a stroke and has no feeling or movement in her left side. As her doctor said, this is a life-changing episode, but I am praying for his light and glory to shine even in a dark moment. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support as we navigate through this present uncertainty. As I learn more, I promise to update you with what I know. My apologies, Facebook cant convey these thoughts with all that is filling my heart now. God bless you (John).

Aarón Medrano has been haunted by the onstage persona of his favorite DJ ever since his mother passed away. He seems to know all of Aarón’s deepest fears, like how his brain doesn’t work the way it should and that’s why his brother and father seem to be pushing him away. He thinks his ticket out is a scholarship to the prestigious Acadia School of Music. That is, if he can avoid blowing his audition. Mia Villanueva has a haunting of her own and it’s the only family heirloom her parents left her: doubt. It’s the reason she can’t overcome her stage fright or believe that her music is worth making. Even though her trumpet teacher tells her she has a gift, she’s not sure if she’ll ever figure out how to use it or if she’s even deserving of it in the first place. When Aarón and Mia cross paths, Aarón sees a chance to get close to the girl he’s had a crush on for years and to finally feel connected to someone since losing his mother. Mia sees a chance to hold herself accountable by making them both face their fears, and hopefully make their dreams come true. But soon they’ll realize there’s something much scarier than getting up on stage—falling in love with a broken heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passionately and with a relatable, eccentric, engaging, raw approach, I Am Great Because I Believed It First delivers the strong attitude and mind-set of belief in oneself starting now, in the present, wherever you are. It’s a mind-set that we must understand the “I,” regardless of external positive praise from others or negative criticism; it’s not real or relevant until you believe it, absorb it, and therefore embrace it. This book bodily and emphatically embraces the paradigm that the first step is, before anybody else in the world believes it, you have to believe it. That is the spark that brings every idea or thought to fruition!
