Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders enclose and separate us. We assign to them tremendous significance. Along them we draw supposedly uncrossable boundaries within which we believe our individual identities begin and end, erecting the metaphysical dividing walls that enclose each one of us into numerically identical, numerically distinct, entities: persons. Do the borders between us - physical, psychological, neurological, causal, spatial, temporal, etc. - merit the metaphysical significance ordinarily accorded them? The central thesis of I Am You is that our borders do not signify boundaries between persons. We are all the same person. Variations on this heretical theme have been voiced periodically throughout the ages (the Upanishads, Averroës, Giordano Bruno, Josiah Royce, Schrödinger, Fred Hoyle, Freeman Dyson). In presenting his arguments, the author relies on detailed analyses of recent formal work on personal identity, especially that of Derek Parfit, Sydney Shoemaker, Robert Nozick, David Wiggins, Daniel C. Dennett and Thomas Nagel, while incorporating the views of Descartes, Leibniz, Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer, Kant, Husserl and Brouwer. His development of the implied moral theory is inspired by, and draws on, Rawls, Sidgwick, Kant and again Parfit. The traditional, commonsense view that we are each a separate person numerically identical to ourselves over time, i.e., that personal identity is closed under known individuating and identifying borders - what the author calls Closed Individualism - is shown to be incoherent. The demonstration that personal identity is not closed but open points collectively in one of two new directions: either there are no continuously existing, self-identical persons over time in the sense ordinarily understood - the sort of view developed by philosophers as diverse as Buddha, Hume and most recently Derek Parfit, what the author calls Empty Individualism - or else you are everyone, i.e., personal identity is not closed under known individuating and identifying borders, what the author calls Open Individualism. In making his case, the author: - offers a new explanation both of consciousness and of self-consciousness - constructs a new theory of Self - explains psychopathologies (e.g. multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia) - shows Open Individualism to be the best competing explanation of who we are - provides the metaphysical foundations for global ethics. The book is intended for philosophers and the philosophically inclined - physicists, mathematicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, linguists, computer scientists, economists, and communication theorists. It is accessible to graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

I wish I had had a book like this when I was a kid struggling with gender identity questions. I found it deeply moving in its simplicity and honesty."—Laverne Cox (who plays Sophia in “Orange Is the New Black”) From the time she was two years old, Jazz knew that she had a girl's brain in a boy's body. She loved pink and dressing up as a mermaid and didn't feel like herself in boys' clothing. This confused her family, until they took her to a doctor who said that Jazz was transgender and that she was born that way. Book You are Therefore I am

Download or read book You are Therefore I am written by Satish Kumar and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces the spiritual journey of the author, as he learns to view the world as a network of multiple, diverse relationships. René Descartes' famous maxim 'I think, therefore, I am' considers the world in terms of dualism, division and separation. Yet the Sanskrit dictum, So Hum, is well known across India but not in the West, and can be translated as 'You are, therefore I am'. A journey of the mind, You are Therefore I am examines the sources of inspiration which formed child monk, peace pilgrim, ecological activist and educator Satish Kumar's understanding of the world as a network of diverse yet interconnected relationships. Written in four parts, the book begins with Satish's memories of conversations with his mother, his teacher and his Guru, all of whom were deeply religious. The second part recounts his discussions with the Indian sage Vinoba Bhave, J. Krishnamurti, Bertrand Russell, Martin Luther King, and E. F. Schumacher. These five great activists and thinkers encouraged him to engage with social, ecological and political issues. In the third part Satish narrates his travels in India, which have continued to nourish his mind and reconnect him with his roots. The final part brings together Satish' world-view, which is based in relationships and the connections between all things. You are, Therefore I am is an inspiring and deeply moving look at how we can re-connect with the world and find peace within ourselves by embracing Satish' emergent world-view.

Book I Am Because You Are

Download or read book I Am Because You Are written by Jacob Lief and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, Jacob Lief, a 21-year-old American university student, met school teacher Malizole "Banks" Gwaxula in a township tavern in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After bonding over beers and a shared passion for education, Gwaxula invited Lief to live with him in the township. Inspired by their fortuitous meeting--which brought together two men separated by race, nationality, and age--and by the spirit of ubuntu, roughly translated as "I am because you are", the two men embarked on an unexpectedly profound journey. Their vision? To provide vulnerable children in the townships with what every child deserves-everything. Today, their organization, Ubuntu Education Fund, is upending conventional wisdom about how to break the cycle of poverty. Shunning traditional development models, Ubuntu has redefined the concept of scale, focusing on how deeply it can impact each child's life rather than how many it can reach. Ubuntu provides everything a child needs and deserves, from prenatal care for pregnant mothers to support through university-essentially, from cradle to career. Their child-centered approach reminds us that one's birthplace should not determine one's future. I Am Because You Are sets forth an unflinching portrayal of the unique rewards and challenges of the nonprofit world while offering a bold vision for a new model of development.

Book I Am Amidst You Now

Download or read book I Am Amidst You Now written by Penny Mc Coy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book you will find prophetic messages, exposition, expression and illustrations depicting God's heart as our Father. They represent the incredible, amazing, grace-filled, loving and faithful beauty of his love to our hearts as his children. I believe these messages will encourage your soul, uplift your eyes, challenge your heart, nurture your mind, soothe your wounds, offer truth, contend for your freedom and offer hope for your destiny. These words are the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God. They demand respectful attention and renew hope for healing, deliverance, wholeness and freedom. They will repeatedly confirm that God himself is Amidst You Now generously providing his healing truth to this lost and dying world - His truth is, he is not dead, he's alive and risen He has ears that hear, eyes that see, a voice that speaks and all authority and power to make the nations tremble. This book gives an image of this period in history where we will be faced with relentless deception. The darkness will be distinguished from The Light as the east is from the west. As the darkness grows expeditiously, The Light will burn brighter on the horizon of God's prophetic vision for the world at large. I believe this book will tug on your heartstrings and question your resolve.
