Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quasi-autobiography began when I concluded my nightly prayer in The Home, “Enough is enough. Please take me back, God.” My intention was a one-way ticket to heaven. However, God sets me straight. “Luke, you have never been to heaven. Believe me, I AM never forgets a face.” But God does take me back, back to the day I was born, eventually. However, whoever was in charge, ignored any close consideration for chronology, duration of events or individuals actually involved was ignored. Nevertheless, I got what every man, woman and child, covets, and dying to get. A second first-chance!

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have read before. "Delightful and absorbing." —The New York Times • "Utterly brilliant." —John Green One of the Best Books of the Year: The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, TIME, GoodReads, Oprah Daily From the best-selling author of The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: On a bitter-cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then, she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money, beg favors, and, before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old, Sam and Sadie are brilliant, successful, and rich, but these qualities won’t protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. Spanning thirty years, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Venice Beach, California, and lands in between and far beyond, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow examines the multifarious nature of identity, disability, failure, the redemptive possibilities in play, and above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love.

  • Author : Douglas W. Portmore
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Opting for the Best written by Douglas W. Portmore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We ought to opt for the best-that is, we ought to choose the option that is best in terms of whatever ultimately matters. So, if maximizing happiness is what ultimately matters, then we ought to perform the option that results in the most happiness. And if, instead, abiding by the Golden Rule is what ultimately matters, then we ought to perform the option that best abides by this rule. However, even if we know what ultimately matters, this is not always sufficient for determining which option we ought to perform. There are other questions that we need to consider as well. Which events are options for us? How do we rank our options-in terms of their own goodness or in terms of the goodness of the best options that entail them? How exactly does that which ultimately matters determine which options we ought to perform? In Opting for the Best, Douglas W. Portmore focuses on these three questions, which he argues can best be answered by putting aside any specific determination of what ultimately matters. He argues that tackling these three questions is crucial to solving many of the puzzles concerning what we ought to do, including those involving supererogation, indeterminate outcomes, overdetermined outcomes, predictable future misbehavior, and good acts that entail bad acts, among others. Engaging with arguments in areas as wide-ranging as action theory and deontic logic, the solutions that Portmore offers systematize our thinking about some of the most complex issues in practical philosophy.

Book So Long See You Tomorrow

Download or read book So Long See You Tomorrow written by William Maxwell and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-04-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this magically evocative novel, William Maxwell explores the enigmatic gravity of the past, which compels us to keep explaining it even as it makes liars out of us every time we try. On a winter morning in the 1920s, a shot rings out on a farm in rural Illinois. A man named Lloyd Wilson has been killed. And the tenuous friendship between two lonely teenagers—one privileged yet neglected, the other a troubled farm boy—has been shattered. Fifty years later, one of those boys—now a grown man—tries to reconstruct the events that led up to the murder. In doing so, he is inevitably drawn back to his lost friend Cletus, who has the misfortune of being the son of Wilson's killer and who in the months before witnessed things that Maxwell's narrator can only guess at. Out of memory and imagination, the surmises of children and the destructive passions of their parents, Maxwell creates a luminous American classic of youth and loss.

Download or read book Clonenstein written by Gary B. Cooke and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clonenstein was given to me by God, as a revelation of things to come. There is a quest for immortality in the flesh. I wrote as I saw it in Clonenstein. Mary Shelley saw it in 1818 in her book Frankenstein. I believe cloning will come to pass one day. How did I get such an insight of the future? Back when I was twenty-two, my room was glowing one night about midnight. I woke up to see a cherub angel hovering over the bed. There was a glowing light coming from this angel. I reached up and touched the cherub to see if it was real. A shock hit me, and I passed out. Ever since then, I can hear and see things. I heard a voice telling me what to write in this book and how to tie it into the first book I wrote, Spirit Led DNA. I have had out-of-body experiences. An angel would come and take me to places and show me things to come. I wrote of this angel in the book. Read and see into the future. Clonenstein is a life story of true love, adventure, mystery, horror, and resurrections of the dead. See for yourself in Clonenstein.
