Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, this study explores the ideas of belonging and citizenship among former pro-autonomy East Timorese who have elected to settle indefinitely in West Timor. The study follows different East Timorese groups and examines various ways they construct and negotiate their socio-political identities following the violent and destructive separation from their homeland. The East Timorese might have had Indonesia as their destination when they left the eastern half of the island in the aftermath of the referendum, but they have not relinquished their cultural identities as East Timorese. The study highlights the significance of the notions of origin, ancestry and alliance in our understanding of East Timorese place-making and belonging to a particular locality. Another feature of belonging that informs East Timorese identity is their narrative of sacrifice to maintain connections with their homeland and move on with their lives in Indonesia. These sacrificial narratives elaborate an East Timorese spirit of struggle and resilience, a feature further exemplified in the transformation of their political activities within the Indonesian political system.

Book excerpt: East Timor, the world's newest nation, finally gained its independence in 2002, following half a millennium of Portuguese rule and 24 years of Indonesian occupation. That occupation produced a refugee diaspora spread between Portugal and Australia that has been integral in advancing East Timor's cause abroad. Because East Timorese in the diaspora identified strongly as exiles and invested so much in pursuing East Timor's independence, the homeland's liberation has complicated the very basis on which many have "imagined" themselves since fleeing to Australia. Wise interrogates the space after exile for members of the East Timorese diaspora in Australia, in dialogue with key debates on diasporic identities within cultural studies, contemporary anthropology, and cultural geography. Drawing on innovative ethnographic research, Exile and Return Among the East Timorese explores questions of shifting identity and home, trauma and embodiment, belonging and return among the East Timorese abroad at this critical juncture in their lives. The book asks what forms of cultural identity emerge among politically active refugee diasporas, what happens to such groups when the dream of homeland is fulfilled, and how they renegotiate a sense of home after exile. The lived experience of Timorese in Australia and former refugees who have returned to East Timor is brought to life through their eloquent and often moving firsthand narratives, which the author has used liberally throughout the book, vividly presenting them alongside images and analysis of their role in the political struggle. Book excerpt: The Indonesian invasion of the former Portuguese colony of East Timor in 1975 was opposed by a coalition of local nationalist groups who engaged in armed resistance. Many people fled to Australia as refugees. Following years of turmoil and after direct urging from the Howard Government, President BJ Habibie offered the East Timorese self-determination. The United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) would ensure voting was free and fair. On 30 August 1999, the East Timorese people declared their overwhelming support for independence. Violence initiated by pro-Jakarta militias produced a humanitarian crisis. Xanana Gusmão, former guerrilla leader and independence advocate, called for international military forces to restore order. The UN accepted Australia's offer to lead what became the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) consisting of 22 nations. On 20 September the first elements of the largest Australian deployment since the Vietnam War arrived in the East Timorese capital, Dili. More than 5,500 uniformed men and women were involved in the intervention and many thousands more were to follow over the ensuing three years. On 28 February 2000, INTERFET was dissolved and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) assumed complete responsibility for peacekeeping operations and civil affairs. The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was inaugurated on 20 May 2002.

Since 1975 to 1999, men, women and children, and even grandparents, have been forced to flee their beloved homeland, their culture, their language, their families - - and the graves of those murdered in repeated massacres over those years. The East Timorese have a special place in our history: so close geographically; giving succour and safe haven to our soldiers during the Japanese occupation of their island; our government in 1975 giving tacit support for an Indonesian invasion with its consequent brutal oppression; and later, in the bloody aftermath of the 1999 independence vote, Australia supporting independence and leading a UN international peace-keeping force to the island. And from 1975 to 1999, refugees arrived in Australia, mostly settling in Melbourne, quietly making new lives, without fuss or fanfare. Some returned after independence, many contributing their Australian-acquired skills and experience to the fledgling country. Until now, their stories, written by people in their community, have not been recorded and published. With a heritage tied so closely to Australia in so many ways, this collection represents an essential part of the great story of migration, whether voluntary or forced, to this country particularly in the last 50 years. The reader will be moved by these remarkable, courageous, and resilient people, who endured so much, just on our doorstep. The East Timorese families in these stories settled in the City of Casey in Melbourne's south-east. The stories are woven into the history of East Timor, a country that was colonised by Portugal for four hundred years, invaded by the Japanese during World War Two, later abandoned by its colonisers and suffered civil war before being invaded by neighbouring Indonesia. In the various periods of this history there are acts of defiance against oppression which resulted in family members being exiled, imprisoned or executed. In two families this fate was passed down through several generations. Some families were split apart as a result of war and conflict, suffering separation for many years. One family of seven children lost their father and were then separated from their mother for more than three years. A 13-year-old girl was away from home when her family were forced to flee. Left behind, she suffered incredible trauma for many years before being reunited with the other family members. Several mothers and some grandmothers were left alone in conflict zones to care for their children and grandchildren, and some were forced to take refuge before being able to escape. And yet, in times when family members were suffering great deprivation at the hands of occupying forces, there were small acts of kindness by individual soldiers.
