Book The Idiom Principle and L1 Influence

Download or read book The Idiom Principle and L1 Influence written by Ying Wang and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines delexical verb + noun collocations such as make a decision, give rise to and take care of in Swedish and Chinese learner English. Using a methodological framework that combines learner corpus research with a contrastive perspective, the study is one of the very few in the field to incorporate corpora of the learner’s L1 to investigate the effects of L1 influence. The book provides a highly detailed and multi-faceted analysis of delexical verb + noun collocations in terms of frequency of occurrence, lexical preferences and morphosyntactic patterns. Quantitative and qualitative results on overuse, underuse and errors are presented with linguistically and pedagogically relevant interpretations that include cultural and discourse aspects. More importantly, the book throws light on how L2 learners may alternate between the open-choice principle and the idiom principle as well as the extent and nature of L1 influence on their collocational use.

Book The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma

Download or read book The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma written by L. Susan Work and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it adopted a new constitution in 1969, the Seminole Nation was the first of the Five Tribes in Oklahoma to formally reorganize its government. In the face of an American legal system that sought either to destroy its nationhood or to impede its self-government, the Seminole Nation tenaciously retained its internal autonomy, cultural vitality, and economic subsistence. Here, L. Susan Work draws on her experience as a tribal attorney to present the first legal history of the twentieth-century Seminole Nation. Work traces the Seminoles’ story from their removal to Indian Territory from Florida in the late nineteenth century to the new challenges of the twenty-first century. She also places the history of the Seminole Nation within the context of general Indian law and policy, thereby revealing common threads in the legal struggles and achievements of the Five Tribes, including their evolving relationships with both federal and state governments. As Work amply demonstrates, the history of the Seminole Nation is one of survival and rebirth. It is a dramatic story of an Indian nation overcoming formidable obstacles to move forward into the twenty-first century as a thriving sovereign nation.

Book The progressive in 19th century English

Download or read book The progressive in 19th century English written by Erik Smitterberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is an empirical, corpus-based study of the progressive in 19th-century English. As the 1800s have been relatively neglected in previous research, and as the study is based on a new cross-genre corpus focusing on this period (CONCE = A Corpus of Nineteenth-Century English), the volume adds significantly to our knowledge of the historical development of the progressive. The use of two separate measures enables an accurate account of the frequency development of the progressive, which is also related to multi-feature/multi-dimensional analyses. Other topics covered include the complexity of progressive verb phrases and the distribution of the construction across linguistic parameters such as clause type. Special attention is paid to progressives that express something beyond purely aspectual meaning. The results show that the progressive became more fully integrated into English grammar over the 19th century, but also that linguistic and extralinguistic parameters affected this integration process; for instance, the construction was more common in women’s than in men’s private letters. Owing to the wide methodological scope of the study, it is of interest to linguists specializing in corpus linguistics, language variation and change, verbal syntax, the progressive, or the linguistic expression of aspect, either in synchrony or diachrony.

Book Syntactic Change in Late Modern English

Download or read book Syntactic Change in Late Modern English written by Erik Smitterberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syntactic Change in Late Modern English presents a stability paradox to linguists; despite the many social changes that took place between 1700 and 1900, the language appeared to be structurally stable during this period. This book resolves this paradox by presenting a new, idiolect-centred perspective on language change, and shows how this framework is applicable to change in any language. It then demonstrates how an idiolect-centred framework can be reconciled with corpus-linguistic methodology through four original case studies. These concern colloquialization (the process by which oral features spread to writing) and densification (the process by which meaning is condensed into shorter linguistic units), two types of change that characterize Modern English. The case studies also shed light on the role of genre and gender in language change and contribute to the discussion of how to operationalize frequency in corpus linguistics. This study will be essential reading for researchers in historical linguistics, corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics.

Book Studies in the History of the English Language II

Download or read book Studies in the History of the English Language II written by Anne Curzan and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the History of the English Language II: Unfolding Conversations contains selected papers from the SHEL-2 conference held at the University of Washington in Spring 2002. In the volume, scholars from North America and Europe address a broad spectrum of research topics in historical English linguistics, including new theories/methods such as Optimality Theory and corpus linguistics, and traditional fields such as phonology and syntax. In each of the four sections - Philology and linguistics; Corpus- and text-based studies; Constraint-based studies; Dialectology - a key article provides the focal point for a discussion between leading scholars, who respond directly to each other's arguments within the volume. In Section 1, Donka Minkova and Lesley Milroy explore the possibilities of historical sociolinguistics as part of a discussion of the distinction between philology and linguistics. In Section 2, Susan M. Fitzmaurice and Erik Smitterberg provide new research findings on the history and usage of progressive constructions. In Section 3, Geoffrey Russom and Robert D. Fulk reanalyze the development of Middle English alliterative meter. In Section 4, Michael Montgomery, Connie Eble, and Guy Bailey interpret new historical evidence of the pen/pin merger in Southern American English. The remaining articles address equally salient problems and possibilities within the field of historical English linguistics. The volume spans topics and time periods from Proto-Germanic sound change to twenty-first century dialect variation, and methodologies from painstaking philological work with written texts to high-speed data gathering in computerized corpora. As a whole, the volume captures an ongoing conversation at the heart of historical English linguistics: the question of evidence and historical reconstruction.

Download or read book Man in the Mirror written by Howard T. Lundy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I look into the glass, thinking about my past. Finally realizing how fast time has moved. Yesterday, today, and I'm still losing. Shame with no gain, and I'm still living in yesterday's window frame, and still feeling the aches and pain. Hmm, fallen from a place of grace. Disappearing without a trace. Now my life is an illusion, with so much confusion. I'm in dire need of a spiritual transfusion. I look into the glass, and what do I see, a very sad man staring back at me. So many brothers and sisters are lost in the struggle. Placed in the line of sight of the devil's muzzle. Confused by the enemy's jigsaw puzzle. The enemy tricks the mind with worldly gifts, as he traverses around for those that he missed. The man in the mirror stares at me, wondering how I've allowed misery to creep back up on me. When I look into his eyes, I see a once saved man that's full of lies. If he's not careful he will surely die.
