Book Historical Sources on Slavery

Download or read book Historical Sources on Slavery written by Chet'la Sebree and published by Cavendish Square Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1619, Dutch traders sold twenty Africans to English settlers for the purposes of slave labor. By the late seventeenth century, enslaved Africans would become the primary source of labor in America, especially in the South. While the North relied more on technology after the Industrial Revolution, the Southern economy was based on agriculture. Despite the aversion of many Northerners to slavery after the American Revolution, the demand for cotton and tobacco in the North kept slavery, on which the antebellum Southern economy was based, alive. Students will read accounts about the lives of those enslaved laborers. Through primary sources, they'll also learn about the laws designed to protect the institution of slavery and how the institution was dismantled.

Book RUN TO WHERE NOBODY IS WAITING

Download or read book RUN TO WHERE NOBODY IS WAITING written by Decebal Bugariu and published by Auto Book Bots. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After living in a corrupt, totalitarian regime in which you are denied the very basic individual rights of freedom– to speak without censorship, to worship without intimidation, to read books you want and meet friends without fear of being spied or reported on, to grow professionally without shameful compromises, to get a passport without the humiliation of having to bribe a corrupt official—when all of these become unbearable, fleeing is one of the very few options; no certain destination, no one waiting for you, yet the only way you can save your sanity, dignity, and integrity. This is a personal account of a long journey from total desperation, through life and near-death events, to safety, hope, and freedom, and I hope that, as crude and unhindered this story is, it is also highly entertaining.

Book Nobody is Protected

Download or read book Nobody is Protected written by Reece Jones and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent look at the U.S. Border Patrol from its xenophobic founding to its assault on the Fourth Amendment in its quest to become a national police force Late one July night in 2020, armed men, identified only by the word POLICE written across their uniforms, began snatching supporters of Black Lives Matter off the street in Portland, Oregon, and placing them in unmarked vans. These mysterious actions were not carried out by local law enforcement or even right-wing terrorists, but by the U.S. Border Patrol. Why was the Border Patrol operating so far from the boundaries of the United States? What were they doing at a protest that had nothing to do with immigration or the border? Nobody Is Protected: How the Border Patrol Became the Most Dangerous Police Force in the United States is the untold story of how, through a series of landmark but largely unknown decisions, the Supreme Court has dramatically curtailed the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution in service of policing borders. The Border Patrol exercises exceptional powers to conduct warrantless stops and interrogations within one hundred miles of land borders or coastlines, an area that includes nine of the ten largest cities and two thirds of the American population. Mapping the Border Patrol’s history from its bigoted and violent Wild West beginnings through the legal precedents that have unleashed today’s militarized force, Guggenheim Fellow Reece Jones reveals the shocking true stories and characters behind its most dangerous policies. With the Border Patrol intent on exploiting current laws to transform itself into a national police force, the truth behind their influence and history has never been more important.
