Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book excerpt: Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. If you've ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it is to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. When life hurts, we often feel pressure--from others and ourselves--to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who lovingly invites us to give honest voice to our emotions when life hits hard. For most of her life, Esther Fleece Allen believed she could bypass the painful emotions of her broken past by shutting them down altogether. She was known as an achiever and an overcomer on the fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you've done the same. Esther's journey into healing began when she discovered that God has given us a real-world way to deal with raw emotions and an alternative to the coping mechanisms that end up causing more pain. It's called lament--the gut-level, honest prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament, taking you on a journey down the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God's own language to come closer to him as he leads us through our pain to the light on the other side, teaching you that: We are robbing ourselves of a divine mystery and a divine intimacy when we pretend to have it all together God does not expect us to be perfect; instead, he meets us where we are There is hope beyond your heartache, disappointment, and grief Like Esther, you'll soon find that when one person stops faking fine, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

Book I Am He

Download or read book I Am He written by Catrin H. Williams and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Testament scholars often claim that the interpretative key to Jesus' pronouncement of the words ego eimi in the Gospel of John lies in the use of this phrase in the Septuagint of Isaiah to render the Hebrew expression 'ani hu' . While previous studies have paid particular attention to the New Testament usage of ego eimi, Catrin H. Williams sets this evidence within a broader framework by offering a detailed analysis of the interpretation of 'ani hu' in biblical and Jewish traditions. She examines the role of 'ani hu' as a succinct expression of God's claim to exclusiveness in the Song of Moses and the poetry of Deutero-Isaiah, and attempts to reconstruct its later interpretative history from the substantial body of evidence preserved in the Aramaic Targumim and several midrashic traditions. Biblical 'ani hu' declarations are cited by rabbinic authorities as proof-texts against a variety of heretical claims, particularly the 'two powers' heresy, but new 'ani hu' formulations, not necessarily confined to divine speeches, are also attested. In the concluding chapters Catrin H. Williams considers the role of 'ani hu' when seeking to interpret Jesus' utterance of the words ego eimi in Synoptic and Johannine traditions.

Book Echoes of a Prophet

  • Author : Gary T. Manning Jr.
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2004-12-01
  • ISBN : 0567639282
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Echoes of a Prophet written by Gary T. Manning Jr. and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes of a Prophet examines intertextual connections to Ezekiel found in John and in Second Temple literature. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain many allusions to a number of Ezekiel's oracles, while other Second Temple works refer to only a few of Ezekiel's oracles, and those only rarely. In each case, Manning examines the evidence for the presence of the allusions, studies the implied interpretational methods, and comments on the function of the allusion in advancing the author's ideas. He also analyzes John's allusions to Ezekiel: the good shepherd, the vine, the opened heavens, imagery from the "dry bones" vision, and water symbolism. He observes that John has a few unique tendencies: he alludes to all five of Ezekiel's "oracles of hope" and primarily uses that imagery to describe the giving of the Holy Spirit and new life through Jesus.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For I Am He God's love is discovered in the substance of faith. Judgment is the voice; following is His speech. Glory is His name Emmanuel; God is with us. To rest in the tree of life is forever presence. We eat from trees mankind has not planted and drink from wells we dug not. We dwell in homes we haven't even built. Almighty God of provision heals in deliverance. Holy is the medicine for the mind and body of the people. Grace is for those that are just favored. Mercy is what picks man up and places thee on His feet when weak, assigned to grow weary in well doing. We are delighted in Your passion, self-controlled in Your way, protected by Your hand, loved in comfort and peace of knowing You. We are positioned in Your will, pleasure in hope, the joy of faith, and long suffering in patience and motivated with wise thoughts of discernment. Garment of boldness and confidence in praise, restoration has been the straps of the shoes of the gospel that must be preached. Your presence is paradise, majestic above the waters that the clouds detain, for it is Your latter reign. The rain that fell down and the clouds that opened up were the comprehension of the doctrine of understanding. For we are saved by Your name; who can know Thee or understand Thee? Ways above the mind and direction in the feet were completely of Him that existed from the beginning of creation when the world framed. You are the God of salvation no other; Great You are. It is He, that hears and acts. Meditate day and night in your strength. Breathe of life in the sunrise. Visions and dreams and gifts, inspiration is the conformation of the spirit. Bowing before You in favor. For my soul thirsts for Thee. For my eyes and body hand and feet desire Thee. Heartfelt ear inclines to the promises and sits in the heaven, and the earth is His footstool. Souls yearn and cry for You coming. Marriage has been wisdom. Divorce is to the separation of the world. Drink from the brook of eternal life. Confined in holiness as a garment of daily bread purified in Him. Peace are the pupils of the eyes. Swaddled as a baby clothed by the Creator. Spirit dwells in us so mightily and settled so sweetly. Lost in righteousness, found in prayer, walking in humility, veil of submission. Knowledge is only understanding Christ not only what He is or who He is but also what was done. The shame of mankind is undone. Forgiveness is purification looking to the clouds; what a great witness.

Book excerpt: JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH, THE CRUCIFIED, FULFILLED THE LAW AND MUCH MORE ON BEHALF OF THE REDEEMED TO BECOME THE SOLE SUBJECT AND OBJECT OF OUR PRAISE AND WORSHIP. Jesus Christ, "the beginning and the end," according to Revelation 22v.13, is in all the Scripture from Genesis 1v.1 through Revelation 22v.21, just as He is spiritually omnipresent in real life. Mankind has many modes or ways of worship of God today because of misconceptions about who God is and His prescribed WAY (singular) therefore. There are many ways men have set up for approaching the ONE Almighty God who created and owns heaven and earth; so it is not out of place to find out if He, the One God, instituted these other ways and if not, did He delegate to man such an important assignment? Remember nothing was made without Him. If the lord of a manor on earth will not permit his biological children open individual entry points into his domain, he will be much harder on intruders. Now translate that scenario to heaven and fancy God seated on His throne and watching the walls of His heavenly paradise bombarded by contractors opening doors of entry for those who refuse to come to Him through His authorized entry point and that is what other modes of worship of tantamount to. The logical conclusion from this scenario is that these other doors or ways do not lead to the one true God of heaven and earth, for such ones are seeking access through illegal doors and so are thieves which are barred from entry. When Satan tried to go to God, he did so by the authorized door but by hiding in the midst of the sons of God and since he is not of the family of God, he was spotted and sent packing; now think of him trying to do so through the back door and that is what religions other than faith in Christ Jesus are trying to do. So when Jesus, the Lamb of God to the world came and did not meet man's specification for a Messiah and more so when He came as a Babe in a manger, He was rejected out of hand as a ruse. He was called the carpenter, rubbished, despised and killed even when He told them and us that if we believed Him not for who He IS, we cannot ignore His works and indeed at a point well after His resurrection and ascension, when all attempts to suppress and cover up His claim to messianic mission failed, the very sanctimonious antagonists of His confessed that the works done by His disciples could not be denied because they were there for all to see.The disciples then and now are, as it were, the Lord Jesus' fingers for it is the mind that controls the fingers and what a SELF-CONDEMNATORY denial of the truth which amounts to Jesus' fingers doing greater works than the Body that owns and uses them. You can see what prophet Jeremiah means when he asks how a man can contend with horses if he cannot run with footmen? and those disabled and crippled ecclesiastics were struggling to outrun the One who created the cheetah, considered the fastest land animal.Only the King James Version (K.J.V.) of the Bible is quoted in this write-up.

Book How Jesus Became God

  • Author : Bart D. Ehrman
  • Publisher : Harper Collins

Download or read book How Jesus Became God written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Bible expert Bart Ehrman reveals how Jesus’s divinity became dogma in the first few centuries of the early church. The claim at the heart of the Christian faith is that Jesus of Nazareth was, and is, God. But this is not what the original disciples believed during Jesus’s lifetime—and it is not what Jesus claimed about himself. How Jesus Became God tells the story of an idea that shaped Christianity, and of the evolution of a belief that looked very different in the fourth century than it did in the first. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman reveals how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty, Creator of all things. But how did he move from being a Jewish prophet to being God? In a book that took eight years to research and write, Ehrman sketches Jesus’s transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus’s followers had visions of him after his death—alive again—did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God. And what they meant by that was not at all what people mean today. Written for secular historians of religion and believers alike, How Jesus Became God will engage anyone interested in the historical developments that led to the affirmation at the heart of Christianity: Jesus was, and is, God.
