Book Ella Mae and the Great Depression

Download or read book Ella Mae and the Great Depression written by B. J. Taylor and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses memoirs from my mother as she grew up and lived before, during, and after the Great Depression. It details some of her experiences. She was from a very poor background educationally and financially, like many people were during those days. It discusses her poor living conditions, her discomforts, and how she lacked any of the conveniences that one has today. It details how hard people had to work at that time and how she persevered to the end-ever, ever struggling to reach her goal of a permanent home. Some of the types of working conditions are described: how difficult it was to get a job that paid enough to live, how hard it was to keep enough food to eat, and how uncomfortable their living conditions were. The homes were poorly built and drafty. It emphasizes the struggle to get rid of lice since they seemed to be everywhere, and just the difficulty to keep warm during winter since there was no central heat or air- conditioning. It discusses her father going to World War I and his war conditions and hazards, such as body lice, gases, death, and not having enough to eat. Then, her husband was drafted into World War II. It touches on the polio epidemic and hospital conditions. It tells how she scrimped and saved unendingly to finally reach her goal of a permanent, warm, and comfortable home. Young people will see a great deal of contrast between living conditions then and now.

Oh, she casts witch's spells and incantations, but not the usual kind. ANITA's main interest is boys, just like any other girl her age. And she doesn't really need things like love potions - not with her face and figure. But ANITA is a witch, and she's young and a little reckless. Which means she sometimes makes mistakes (usually with boys), and when she does... all Hell might break loose....

Book The Thing About My Uncle

Download or read book The Thing About My Uncle written by Peter J. Stavros and published by BHC Press. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thing about my uncle was that I hardly knew him. Uncle Theo kept to himself, some would say he was a recluse, and by all accounts, that was how he preferred it. I couldn’t precisely recall when I had seen him last in the flesh. I just had a foggy recollection from when I was little, like a grainy home movie with cracks and skips and frames missing… Although ten years have passed, Rhett Littlefield has always blamed himself for his father abandoning him and his family. When the troubled fourteen-year-old gets kicked out of school for his latest run-in with the vice principal, his frazzled single mother sends him to the hollers of Eastern Kentucky to stay with his Uncle Theo, a man of few words who leads an isolated existence with his loyal dog, Chekhov. Resigned to make the best of his situation while still longing for the day when Mama will allow him to return home, Rhett settles into his new life. Rhett barely remembers his uncle, but he’s determined to get to know him. As he does, Rhett discovers that he and Uncle Theo share a connection to the past, one that has altered both their lives, a past that will soon come calling. The Thing About My Uncle is an engaging and heartwarming coming-of-age story that explores the cost of family secrets, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of reconciling the two in order to move forward.

Download or read book Confederate Money written by Paul Varnes and published by Pineapple Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, as this story opens with the Yankee raid on the salt works at Cedar Key, Florida, a Confederate dollar is worth 90 cents in gold or silver. The Yankee soldiers, in their zeal to destroy the important Confederate salt works, kill young Henry Ferns step-pa, who has brought Henry to the Gulf Coast town on his first train ride. From that moment on, Henry's mind is locked on revenge. His goal to find the Yankee killers leads him throughout the South and much of the North as the war spreads. He studies medicine and offers aid to whichever side he needs to move through at the time. Through shrewd dealings he manages to amass $40,000 in Confederate paper money. Henry realizes that the Yankees are going to win the war or, at best, the South will end it a draw. In either case, the Confederate money will not be worth as much as silver or gold, so he sets out to change it into specie. Henery's adventures take him into both sides of the Battles of Shiloh Church, Chickamauga, and Olustee. With his charismatic personality and keen judgment, Henry manages to thrive even as the war rages, persisting in changing his paper fortune into silver and gold. He is as generous with his family, friends, and those he perceives to be in need as he is ruthless with those he knows to be his enemies. By the time Sherman marches through Atlanta in late 1864, the Confederate dollar has declined to 28 for one in silver or gold. When Sherman reaches Savannah, its worth is 45 to one. When Lee surrenders the next April, its worth is 80 to one. One month later it has fallen to 1,000 to one. Shortly after this, Henry undertakes a daring raid on the hidden Confederate treasury to bring him to his financial goal.

Book excerpt: AN EPISODE OF GRACE, a full score of new stories by Linda McCullough Moore, will delight readers with uncanny charm, disarming humor, and yes, unlikely but so-welcome episodes of grace. Here are divorcing parents, prisoners, patients, in-laws, wives and husbands caught up in living lives of complication, sometime regret, and willing honesty. These are people we know, people we are, but with a difference. Their confusions and misgivings vie with something very much like joy, like some new understanding of what love might be, of what redemption feels like. These stories take on loss and sadness, but you get your money back if they don’t make you laugh out loud and think perhaps the human enterprise might just be worth another think.

Book Can the Elect Be Deceived

Download or read book Can the Elect Be Deceived written by Ashira Bellamy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the Elect Be Deceived is not intended to ask a question, but to incite a vigilant stir in us. We can get so comfortable in our ceremonial, habitual, routines and patterns that the subtleties of the enemy too often go unnoticed, and many times do not even occur to us until it is too late. The spirit of deception is rampant among us, and without keen discernment one can and will fall prey to the devourer. Deception mimics sincerity and is designed to look and sound good and feel right. The impostor comes posing as the "Real McCoy," and oft times we are none the wiser. Even as a minister of the gospel, when deception came I did not recognize it. It did not come the usual way. It did not announce itself. It did not come as I would suspectI did not have a clue that my deceiver was truly a "wolf in sheep's clothing." So I tell my story to sound the alarm!
