Book A SECOND CHANCE

Download or read book A SECOND CHANCE written by Horatio M Bennett and published by Horatio M Bennett. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four of them died untimely deaths - and so were rejected at either ends: Heaven did not want them. Hell could not keep them So the sent them back with an indictment of humanity... Sarah felt little Jo’s body grew tense, and she instinctively looked towards the door. It was only a faint, scatting sound, but recognizable. Footsteps were approaching. She was not expecting anyone. She had not turned a trick in weeks, not since Jerry died. She really was not interested in being with anyone for a spell, if ever again. Jerry’s death still hurts. It was not that Jerry was kind to her, or even considerate, but he was the closest thing she had as family. Of course, he wasn’t family; in fact, he was her pimp and only protector. The number of scars resulting from his years of physical abuse would have eliminated him from her will, if she had anything to will. But Jerry was Jerry, and that was all he could ever be... Sarah listened closely as the steps softly approached. Maybe someone was going to one of the other apartments on the floor. She knew it was not the wayward caretaker. No, he would walk boldly and banged on the door as if he had rights. Sarah waited curiously as the footsteps lightly padded along the bare floors. The steps were hesitant, but obviously belonging to someone with above average weight. From the way the sound followed the footsteps, Sarah was sure the walker was a man, and big one at that. Certainly, not the skinny caretaker. The floor creaked as the person moved forward. As the sound drew near her door it stopped. The air carried an atmosphere of imminent danger.

Book excerpt: Follow the life of the title character as he struggles to attach some understanding to the unforgiving world that seems determined to consume him. At school, he's confronted with indifferent administrators, both over-demanding and hardhearted teachers, and a variety of bullies. At home, he's simply left alone--forgotten--to fend for himself. His father is long gone and barely a memory. His mother is more concerned with surviving her own life rather than being a mother to Nobody. Therefore, all Nobody can hope for in life is to survive, one minute at a time, which leaves little ambition for homework. Even though life seems like a sick, twisted joke with the laugh always at his expense, Nobody searches inside himself to find the strength to endure and eventually overcomes his fate. Nobody understands that it's up to himself alone to find his own path as he tries to decide whether or not to drop out of high school.

Book excerpt: In their exposé of Gen Z, The New York Times qualified its members as the “most diverse generation in American history". Recent Broadway hits have found a successful formula in productions showcasing the emotional turmoil of contemporary young people, yet the majority of these works represent predominantly white voices, both in terms of authorship and representation. Non-white characters tend to exist only in a world of colorblind casting rather than speaking to their distinct racial and cultural heritage. This anthology helps correct that balance and presents a unique offering of plays written for multicultural teenagers by diverse authors who have spent a significant part of their careers working closely with young people in urban settings. The playwrights - among them award winners such as Chisa Hutchinson and Nilaja Sun - have created texts that are dramatic and comic, satirical and earnest, touchingly real, and amusingly surreal. Varying in length and format, suitable for classrooms and youth groups of all sizes, the plays address such themes as ethnic and cultural identity; ancestry and assimilation; bullying and self-empowerment; disenfranchisement and alienation; parental pressure to over-achieve, youth activism and community-building; and the very real perils of daily school life in an era of gun proliferation.

Book excerpt: Antislavery agitation is rocking Utica in 1835 when a young bride discovers an enslaved family hiding in her shed, setting in motion the exhumation of long-buried family secrets. “In this eloquent debut, a diverse cast of characters embodies the political, class, and racial upheavals of its time and milieu, and does it all in living local color . . . [A] powerful look at the prologue to Emancipation.” —Kirkus Reviews It’s 1835 in Utica, New York, and newlywed Helen Galway discovers a secret: two people who have escaped enslavement are hiding in the shack behind her husband’s house. Suddenly, she is at the center of the era’s greatest moral dilemma: Should she be a “good wife” and report the fugitives? Or will she defy convention and come to their aid? Within her home, Helen is haunted by the previous Mrs. Galway, recently deceased but still an oppressive presence. Her husband, injured by a drunken tumble off his horse, is assisted by a doctor of questionable ambitions who keeps a close eye on Helen. In charge of all things domestic is Maggie—formerly enslaved by the Galway family and freed when emancipation came to New York eight years earlier. Abolitionists arriving in Utica to found the New York State Anti-Slavery Society are accused by the local papers of being traitors to the Constitution. Everyone faces dangerous choices as they navigate this intensely heated personal and political landscape.

Book excerpt: In this collection of linked stories, Michael Angrosino imaginatively re-creates the Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York where he grew up in the 1950s. This working-class ethnic enclave was in a state of flux; seemingly timeless verities were being challenged as a younger generation prepared for the great dispersion to the middle-class suburbs. Angrosino's stories are built around vivid neighborhood characters making their way through the joys, sorrows, and confusions of everyday life in a community that was soon to vanish. Meet: Ike, the embittered candystore owner who comes to grief when he tries to arrange a marriage for a long-lost relative; Sadie, the whimsical bag-lady who somewhat improbably pines to settle down; Pally, the tormented boxer who destroys his sister's happiness; Mattie, the optimistic good samaritan desperately trying to extricate himself from the coils of an ancient family vendetta; Sammy T., the undertaker with "connections"; Old Man Conforti, the dying pigeon racer; the Del Lagos, the world's most hopeless streetcorner doo-wop group-and many more. In good Italian fashion, these stories deal with sin and redemption, but with plentiful helpings of good music and delicious food.

  • Pages : 420 pages

Download or read book Time s Fool written by Glyn Maxwell and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2002-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Lea perpetually rides a ghost train -- except every seven years on Christmas Eve, when he is allowed to revisit his home town. Like Wagner's Flying Dutchman, Edmund is condemned to eternity alone until he determines how to lift the curse upon him. Time passes, from 1970 to 2019, but Edmund remains seventeen, unable to age and watching the world grow older. He tries in vain to break the spell by way of true love, repentance, hedonism; he tries to change the world and he tries to die. Characters move in and out of Maxwell's story like Dante's figures in Hell, but Edmund's own Virgil is a careless and unhelpful poet, a portrait of the author as a student. The tale is told in formal terza rima, but its language and tone, its humor and sense of homesickness, are decidedly contemporary. It is a brilliant achievement.
