Book Hypernuclei and Interactions of Kaons with Nuclei

Download or read book Hypernuclei and Interactions of Kaons with Nuclei written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental and theoretical progress in hypernuclear physics is reviewed. Different models for hyperon-nucleus central and spin-orbit potentials are compared: several models yield a very small spin-orbit strength for the ..lambda.., as experimentally observed, but differ considerably in their predictions for the ..sigma ... The new data on the 13C hypernuclear spectrum, as obtained in the (K−, ..pi..−) strangeness exchange reaction at 800 MeV/c, are discussed. It is shown how one extracts constraints on the ..lambda..-nucleus and effective ..lambda..-nucleon ineractions from the data. The new BNL data on the (K−, ..pi..) reaction at 720 MeV/c, leading to ..sigma..-hypernuclear states, are examined. The case of 6Li(K−, ..pi..)6H is discussed in some detail, and some speculations concerning the (K−, ..pi..+) reaction on other targets are presented. The physical mechanisms which may lead to unusually narrow ..sigma.. excitations in some systems are examined. Finally, the physics motivations for several future hypernuclear experiments which are already under development, such as (K−, ..pi..−..gamma..) and ..pi../sup + -/, K+) studies, or under preliminary consideration, for instance, the (K−, K/sup +/) reaction producing S=-2 hypernuclei are reviewed.

Book excerpt: High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure covers the proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure, held in Versailles on July 6-10, 1981. The book focuses on the processes, reactions, and methodologies involved in high energy physics and nuclear structure. The selection first offers information on experiments on antinucleon-nucleon, baryonium, nucleon-nucleon, and dibaryons and the quark model pion and the goldstone pion. Discussions focus on antinucleon-nucleon and baryonium, nucleon-nucleon and dibaryon, and spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. The text also ponders on quarks and nuclei, multiquark resonant states, and electron scattering from complex nuclei. The publication elaborates on electromagnetic interactions on light nuclei, electromagnetic interactions with nuclei at high momentum transfer, and inelastic electron scattering at low energy. The book also touches on the dynamics of hadron nucleus interactions, hypernuclei and interactions of kaons with nuclei, and pion-nucleus scattering theory. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in high energy structure and nuclear physics.

Book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei

Download or read book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei written by Hans Volker Klapdor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.

Book Introduction to Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics written by Jerzy Bartke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to cover the fascinating field of physics of relativistic heavy ions, mainly from the experimentalist's point of view. After the introductory chapter on quantum chromodynamics, basic properties of atomic nuclei, sources of relativistic nuclei, and typical detector set-ups are described in three subsequent chapters. Experimental facts on collisions of relativistic heavy ions are systematically presented in 15 consecutive chapters, starting from the simplest features like cross sections, multiplicities, and spectra of secondary particles and going to more involved characteristics like correlations, various relatively rare processes, and newly discovered features: collective flow, high pT suppression and jet quenching. Some entirely new topics are included, such as the difference between neutron and proton radii in nuclei, heavy hypernuclei, and electromagnetic effects on secondary particle spectra.Phenomenological approaches and related simple models are discussed in parallel with the presentation of experimental data. Near the end of the book, recent ideas about the new state of matter created in collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei are discussed. In the final chapter, some predictions are given for nuclear collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now in construction at the site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva. Finally, the appendix gives us basic notions of relativistic kinematics, and lists the main international conferences related to this field. A concise reference book on physics of relativistic heavy ions, it shows the present status of this field.

Book Hadron Nucleus Interactions

Download or read book Hadron Nucleus Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic and inelastic scattering of intermediate energy (less than or equal to 1 GeV) protons by nuclei is considered first. The discussion focuses on the determination of the proton-nucleus optical potential in terms of the elementary nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and the properties of the target and residual nucleus. The result is a series of terms for the optical potential. Then the interaction of pions with nuclei for energies in the neighborhood of the .delta.-resonance is discussed. In this energy domain an incident pion will with high probability be absorbed by a nucleon to produce the .delta.-resonance and thus form a .delta.-particle hole state in the nucleus. Next, the subject of hypernuclei is taken up. The .lambda. hypernuclei and a recently observed .sigma. hypernuclei comprise situations in which the core nucleus can be probed by a baryon of roughly the same mass as a nucleon, with similar albeit not identical interactions with nucleons. But the .lambda. (or .sigma.) does not need to satisfy the Pauli exclusion principle with respect to the nucleons, and therefore can be in orbits forbidden to it if it were a nucleon. As the energy of the projectile increases, it becomes correspondingly more important to take relativistic effects into account. The importance of these effects is strikingly revealed by experiments involving the collision of ultrarelativistic hadrons, protons, pions, kaons (up to Fermilab energies) with nuclei. This phenomenon forms part of the final topic, which includes as well as the collision of relativistic heavy ion projectiles with nuclei. A nuclear Weiszaecker-Williams method developed for dealing with peripheral collisions is described. 32 figures, 10 tables. (RWR).
