Book Songs of the Christian Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs of the Christian Life Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Richards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Christian Life Tms book is intended to give inspiration and expression to the larger and richer conceptions of the Christian life now prevailing. It seeks to kindle hope, arouse courage, and stimulate noble purposes. It aims to develop trust and joy, devotion to duty and unselfish service, filial love to God and fraternal love to man. The hymns have been selected because of real poetic merit, and because they breathe a spirit of genuine experience and practical service. While the number is limited, every phase of Christian worship and life is sufficiently covered. Hymns of aspiration, of character, of con duct, of the home, of devotion to the common weal, of effort to secure a kingdom of heaven on earth, of the new spirit of brotherhood are here. Christ is given the central place. Not only is his earthly career fully illustrated, but groups of hymns present him as the Eternal Friend, the Good Shepherd, the Rock of Ages, the Master and the Light of the World. Hymns of the church are here, and especially of its missionary activities, issuing in The Triumphant Kingdom. Christian optimism finds voice in these hymns. Since patriotism is a part of religion an unusual number of national hymns is brought together here. The tunes have been chosen with like care, that the best hymns may be matched with music of the finest quality. The first aim has beenito secure singable tunes, such as congregations will delight to sing tunes with a haunting melody, and such as fit the words. The second aim has been to have music of such excellence in harmony and construction as to be attractive to trained musicians as well as others. The old, familiar tunes are here, as well as those of the latest and best modern composers. Sixty percent of the tunes are already either old or new favorites, and it is hoped that many of the others will speedily become such. It is believed that every tune in these pages, under competent leadership, may be readily learned by any congregation. The great Canticles which the Church has used for centuries are here set to the best music of ancient and modern composers. It is hoped that a much larger use of this form of worship song may be made. With a little practice whole congregations can easily learn to chant under a competent director. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel and Epistle Hymns for the Christian Year A great and increasing desire has been manifested in many quarters for special hymns to be used on the differ ent Sundays in the year. Hoping in some measure to be able to supply this need, the author of this work, who for many years has been engaged in the translation of hymns from the Latin, German, and other languages, has now prepared a series of original hymns for each Sunday and great Festival, based upon the Scriptural teaching of the service for the day, and written in a variety of easy, flowing and familiar metres. At present it has been found impossible to issue a musical edition; but, if sufficient encouragement be given to the work, another edition will be issued with the hymns set to simple and familiar tunes, carefully selected from the best English and German sources, with a very few origi nal compositions. The proper tune for each hymn, with the name of the author is indicated in this edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Whenever it is genuine, it is the natural and spontaneous utterance of a mind possessed by the conception of the infinite relations in which we stand, and aspiring towards a point of new worthy of their solemnity. And though it breathes forth the deepest and greatest of desires, it is essentially an end, and not a means and, like the embrace of friendship, or the kiss of domestic affection, loses all its meaning, when adopted from conviction of its reasonableness, or 'with a view to personal advantage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-Time Hymns: A Collection of Old and New Hymns of the Christian Church; For the Use in Churches, Sunday-Schools, Prayer Meetings and Social Gatherings A book worthy of such a title ought to be rich in hymns and in music. A There is not a hymn in this book that is not worthy to live in our memories for a life time. There are some hymns that go with us from childhood to manhood and womanhood, and are still with us when we reach the gates of heaven. They never lose their power over us and their charm is never broken. Other hymns come and go, but these abide. Such hymns have been gathered from all possible sources for the enrichment of these pages. The music is of a high order. Much of it is classical. Many of the best pieces have been thoroughly tested by trained choirs and large congregations. There is need of a book which will aid in elevating the poetical and musical taste of the people. Life-time-hymns will contribute largely to this desired result. Acknowledgments are hereby gratefully extended to the composers, writers and publishers who have permitted us to use their valuable copy rights. For Sabbath-schools, social meetings, and great out-door assemblies, we believe-life-time-hymns is without a peer. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methodist Free Church Hymns Not less earnestly has the Committee endeavoured, in the inclusion of new hymns, to provide for the glad and grateful expression of praise. It is still, it will always be 'a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.' In all ages praise has been the universal lan guage of the children of God, and He reveals Himself in response, when they draw nigh to Him with songs of thanksgiving. Thus, at the dedication of the temple, when they lifted up their voices, the glory of the Lord filled the House of God and the great multitude which no man can number, ' with 'the voice of many waters, ' sing the new song unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb for ever and ever.' The compilers have also striven, by the choice of suitable hymns, and through the classification and arrangement of the whole book, to stimulate the manifestation of practical Christianity, and to supply a medium for the devout utterance of the varied emotions and experiences of the Christian life. Many hymns are comprised, that, to those who are afflicted, and to those in suffering and sorrow, will be full of consolation, and will be welcome as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.'
