Book Hymns of the Atharvaveda Vol II

Download or read book Hymns of the Atharvaveda Vol II written by Ralph T.H. Griffith and published by Sanctum Books. This book was released on 2023-11-29 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India both the Rgveda and the Atharvaveda represent the earliest age in the history of sacred literature. However the spirit of the Atharvaveda breathes of a prehistoric stage. Some of its charms, witchcrafts and exorcism go back to Indo-European period. Dr. A. Kuhn has proved how some of its spells for curing bodily ailments agree in purpose and content as well as to some extent even in form, with certain old German, Lettic and Russian charms. Every evil thing in nature, from a drought to a fever or bad qualities of the human heart, is personified and made the object of terror-stricken propitiation, or of attempt at circumvention through witchcraft, or the instrument of harm to others through the same compelling nature. Here as there, worship takes the form of conjuring, not prayer; its ministers are sorcerers, not priests. The synonyms of the Atharvaveda like Atharvangirasah, Bhrgavangirasah and Brahmaveda speak of the development and the status it has enjoyed from time to time. In domestic sacrifices the Atharvan influence has been indelible. A deep study of the Atharvaveda and other Vedic texts unfolds new dimensions to modern sciences namely Comparative Philology, Comparative Mythology, Comparative Religion and Comparative Literature. Though Vedic literature the practical teaching of the classical languages in Europe has undergone an important change. The intellectual debt of Europe to India has thus been immense. It may perhaps become greater still in these post-independence years. Its special features include: a comparative study of the Saunaka and the Paippalada schools; and pointed references to the latest but lesser known researches expressed in Sanskrit language in the sixteen volumes Vedic Padanukramakosa by Acarya Dr. Vishva Bandhu Shastri and his distinguishes colleagues. This will evoke response from enlightened scholars for our prospective publications on other works.

Stanzas 1--3 are taken from hymns ascribed to the Rishi Parucbchhepa. One of the peculiarities of these hymns, which are 'generally obscure and frequently unintelligible is 'to reiterate a leading word which occurs the third or fourth from the end of the first line, and sometimes also of the third, and to repeat it as the last word of the line. Thus we have here 3, line 1. S&num eahato.Tills--'--, viprant no Jdtavedatam; this is little else than a kind of alliterative jingle, but the scholiast.thinks it neoessary to assign to the repeated word a distinct signification.'---Wilson. 4 Busied with sacrifice, with spotted deer and spears, gleaming upon your way with ornaments, yea, our friends, Sitting on sacred grass, ye sons of Bharata, drink Soma from the Potar's bowl, O Men of heaven. 5 Bring the Gods hither, Sags, and offer sacrifice. At the three altars seat thee willingly, O Priest. Accept for thy delight the proffered Soma mead: drink from the Kindler's bowl and sate thee with thy share. 6 This is the strengthener of thy body's manly might: strength, victory for all time are laid within thine arms. Pressed for thee, Maghavan, it is offered unto thee: drink from the chalice of this Brahman, drink thy fill. '-, 7 Him whom of old I called on, him I call on now. He is to be invoked: his name is He who Gives. Here brought by priests is Soma mead. Granter of Wealth, drink Soma with the Seasons from the Hotar's Cup. 4 Addressed to the Maruts. Suited with tarriflee: all natural phenomena, and especially the fall of the periodical runs, being regarded as intimately connected with the sacrifices offered on earth. Spotted deer: 'the recognised animals of the Maruts, originally, as it would seem, intended for the...
