Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymnal and Liturgies of the Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum) This Hymnal and Liturgies is presented to the Congregations of the Moravian Church in America, in accordance with a series of enactments of the Synods of 1913 and 1920, of the Northern Province of the Moravian Church in America. A committee, constituted of nine representatives of the Northern Province and two of the Southern Province, was appointed to revise the Hymnal; a committee of five was also appointed to revise the Liturgy. To the former was committed the task of assembling all parts of the work, determining details of arrangement and of publication. Both committees aimed steadfastly to bring the new Hymn Book up to the standards of modern hymnological and liturgical practice, without impairing its Moravian character. This latest addition to Moravian Hymnals has behind it a long and noble ancestry. It is the lineal descendant of the earliest collection of its kind. The Unitas F ratrum, or Moravian Church, was the first among Protestant churches to publish a hymn-book. It appeared in the Bohemian language, at Prague, in 1501. It contained versions of old Latin Hymns, together with many original compositions, mostly by John Hus and Bishop Luke of Prague. Subsequent issues followed up to the year 1569, some of them appearing in the Polish and German languages. The tunes, printed at the head of each hymn, were partly Gregorian, partly folk-song melodies adapted to the uses of the sanctuary, and partly original compositions. The hymns of these collections were a power in the Church, in Bohemia, Moravia and the regions beyond. They gave life to public worship, they were sung in the homes of noble and peasant, they set forth the pure Gospel in strains that captivated thousands of hearts. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.

Book excerpt: The eighteenth century was a time of significant change in the perception of marriage and family relations, the emphasis of reason over revelation, and the spread of political consciousness. The Unity of the Brethren, known in America as Moravians, experienced the resulting tensions firsthand as they organized their protective religious settlements in Germany. A group of the Brethren who later settled in Salem, North Carolina, experienced the stresses of cultural and generational conflict when its younger members came to think of themselves as Americans. The Moravians who first immigrated to America actively maintained their connections to those who remained in Europe and gave them the authority for deciding religious, social, and governmental issues. But, as the children born in Salem became acclimated to more freedoms, particularly in the wake of the American Revolution, a series of disputes intensified the problems of transatlantic governance. While the group's leadership usually associated Enlightenment principles with rebellion and religious skepticism, the younger Brethren were drawn to its message of individual autonomy and creative expression. Elisabeth Sommer traces the impact of this generational and cultural change among Moravians on both sides of the Atlantic and examines the resulting debate over the definition of freedom and faith.
