Book Theory and Practice of Biological Control

Download or read book Theory and Practice of Biological Control written by C.B. Huffaker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Theory and Practice of Biological Control covers conventional biological control achievement in the major crop types and in public health problems. Composed of five sections encompassing 28 chapters, this book discusses the basic information concerning developments in other biologically based alternatives to chemical pesticides. The first two sections discuss the philosophy, theory, scope, history, and the biological and ecological bases of biological control. These sections also deal with the impact of predators and the host relationships of parasitoids and pathogens. The following section presents the methodological aspects of biological control. Discussions on the variability of natural enemies as encountered in biological control work; the fitness of individuals and populations; the ways fitness is being or can be influenced by importation procedures; and the ability of imported natural enemies to adapt to the new environment are included. The fourth section outlines the accomplishments of conventional biological control in various types of crops, forests, and public health areas. Lastly, the various components of integrated pest control other than conventional biological control that forms the essential ways used in the integrated control approach are covered in the last section of the book. This book is an ideal source for plant pathologists and researchers, microbiologists, parasitologists, and public health professionals.

Book The Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects

Download or read book The Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects written by Peter C. Barnard and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Entomological Society (RES) and Wiley-Blackwell are proud to present this landmark publication, celebrating the wonderful diversity of the insects of the British Isles, and the work of the RES (founded 1833). This book is the only modern systematic account of all 558 families of British insects, covering not just the large and familiar groups that are included in popular books, but even the smallest and least known. It is beautifully illustrated throughout in full colour with photographs by experienced wildlife photographers to show the range of diversity, both morphological and behavioural, among the 24,000 species. All of the 6,000 genera of British insects are listed and indexed, along with all the family names and higher groups. There is a summary of the classification, biology and economic importance of each family together with further references for detailed identification. All species currently subject to legal protection in the United Kingdom are also listed. The Royal Entomological Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious of its kind in the world. It is the leading organisation for professional entomologists and its main aim has always been the promotion of knowledge about insects. The RES began its famous Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects in 1949, and new works in that series continue to be published. The Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects has been produced to demonstrate the on-going commitment of the RES to educate and encourage each generation to study these fascinating creatures. This is a key reference work for serious students of entomology and amateur entomologists, as well as for professionals who need a comprehensive source of information about the insect groups of the British Isles they may be less familiar with.

Book A revision of the Chinese Gasteruptiidae Hymenoptera Evanioidea

Download or read book A revision of the Chinese Gasteruptiidae Hymenoptera Evanioidea written by Ke-xin Zhao and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gasteruptiidae Ashmead, 1900 (Hymenoptera: Evanioidea) is a worldwide distributed family, including two extant subfamilies Hyptiogastrinae and Gasteruptiinae and one extinct subfamily Kutujellitinae. There are approximately 500 extent species of this family are recorded in the world, with only 16 species in one genus are known from China. An extensive review of previously published literatures and previously unidentified specimens referred to Gasteruptiidae results in taxonomic revision of the family from China. This monograph includes identification of six new species and eight Chinese new record species, establishment of three new synonyms, and designation of three lectotypes. Descriptions and illustrations of the 28 valid Chinese species of the genus Gasteruption are provided and key to all Chinese species are made. The results of this monograph clarify some taxonomic confusion, richen the geographical distributions of Gasteruptiidae in China and provide facilities for further research in Chinese Gasteruptiidae.
