L'Association Internationale pour la Recherche en Hygiène Hospitalière, créée en 1968 par le Pr. Maisonnet, joua un rôle premier pour le développement de cette discipline. Plusieurs centaines de personnes de diverses disciplines, directement ou indirectement au service des patients, qui souhaitaient progresser dans la lutte contre les infections hospitalières, bénéficièrent de ses journées internationales de formation. Madame Saire Mauffrey est l'une d'elles. Elle a joué, à différents niveaux, un rôle moteur dans la lutte et la prévention des infections nosocomiales, en particulier dans la spécialité qu'elle connaît bien : l'anesthésie. A partir d'un mémoire de recherche, soutenu au sein de l'AIRHH, elle a rédigé un ouvrage de référence, vite épuisé.
