Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of total joint arthroplasty throughout the world has contributed manifold benefits to patients who suffer from joint diseases. Concurrently, however, there has been an increase in revision surgery. Many orthopedic surgeons agree that durability of prostheses is an eternal problem. In particular, periprosthetic osteolysis recently has been identified as one of the serious problems affecting prosthetic dura bility. To improve durability, osteolysis and many other problems must be investi gated and solved both experimentally and clinically with respect to such aspects as prosthetic material, design, and biological and biomechanical behavior. This book comprises 37 papers that were presented by orthopedic surgeons and biomedical engineers at the 28th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Replace ment Arthroplasty, held in March 1998 in Kanazawa, Japan. The volume is thus a compilation of the latest knowledge about the pathogenesis and reduction of osteolysis and wear, newly developed total hip prostheses, and other current topics of total knee arthroplasty. We earnestly hope that this book will be of benefit to clinicians and researchers, and that it will contribute to the creation of more durable total joint prostheses in the future. A prime concern has been improved durability, for which a major factor is reduction of the polyethylene wear that leads to osteolysis. This book presents an update on the means by which the problems of wear and loosening are being addressed in total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Included are chapters on new surgical techniques for difficult cases, nonpolyethylene interfaces for THA, custom hip prostheses, and computer-assisted surgery. Arthroplasty 2000 also takes up current controversial issues such as posterior cruciate substitution versus retention in TKA. With contributions by eminent specialists in total joint replacement in Asia, Europe, and North America, this volume is a valuable reference for all orthopedic surgeons.

Book Bone Implant Interface in Orthopedic Surgery

Download or read book Bone Implant Interface in Orthopedic Surgery written by Theofilos Karachalios and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Total joint arthroplasty is an effective surgical procedure for end-stage osteoarthritis of major joints with satisfactory long term clinical outcome. A large and growing number of arthroplasties are performed annually worldwide and a great number of orthopaedic surgeons are practicing arthroplasty surgery as their main surgical activity. The biological behavior of the bone-implant interface is crucial for the long term survival of the artificial joint. All factors which have a positive or negative effect on the interface are of great interest for those practicing arthroplasty surgery. Basic scientists and the industry are continuously searching for new implant fixation mechanisms and improved materials. There is an accumulation of a great amount of basic science data (both biological, material and mechanical) related to the incorporation or loosening of the bone-implant interface. However, basic science data does not always translate to satisfactory clinical application, and orthopaedic practitioners often wonder which piece of information is clinically useful. A further problem is that basic scientists often speak their own scientific language and may not fully appreciate common clinical practice needs. In this textbook the biological and mechanical mechanisms of implant incorporation and loosening will be presented. All new data concerning materials and methods for incorporation enhancement will be critically analyzed. Data useful for clinical application will be stressed. Orthopaedic Surgeons will find information which will improve their clinical practice and basic scientists will be helped to understand and appreciate clinical needs.
