Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrotherapy: A Brief Summary of the Practical Value of Water in Disease for Students and Practicians of Medicine This volume is the outgrowth of a course of yearly lectures which have been re-written, revised and added to from time to time during the past seven years, and its publication is due to the demand of students and practicians of medicine for a small though complete volume on Hydrotherapy. The volume will fulfill its mission if it teaches in a fairly comprehensive way what hydrotherapy means and accomplishes, and succeeds in enrolling its readers into the growing fraternity of physical therapists through bringing this subject before them in a concise, clear-cut manner. The writer desires at this point to acknowledge his great indebtedness to the late Dr. J. G. Kuhn, of Hudson County, N. J., with whom he spent the summer of 1897 in the study of this subject and whose influence has been potent in molding the author's conceptions on this therapeutic measure. Doctor Kuhn practiced hydrotherapy for over fifty years, and his tempered experience has been accepted and adopted by the author in many of the therapeutic recommendations. The writer also desires to express his thanks to the J. L. Mott Iron Works for the loan of numerous electrotypes illustrating hydro-therapeutic apparatus and to Mr. H. L. Steidel for his assistance in the preparation of photographs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Hydrotherapy: A Guide to the Application of Water in Disease, for Students and Practitioners of Medicine The necessity for a special work on hydrotherapy still appears to be urgent, if the attention this subject receives in the average text-book be accepted as a criterion. One of the latest of these works on therapeutics says in its thirteenth edition: "The object of the bath is the reduction of the temperature, and unless this is effected no good results." And this false teaching emanates from a work which the majority of students use as a text-book and whose value in other respects is attested by its popularity. The author will complete in eighteen months a half-century spent in the study and practice of medicine. During the first half of this period he was uninformed on hydrotherapy; during the latter half he has endeavored to study and utilize water as a remedial agent. He has therefore subjected water to the crucial test of a control experiment. And he may conscientiously say that the comfort and satisfaction which the addition of this agent to his therapeutic resources has afforded him in the amelioration of suffering and saving of lives warrant him to devote the remaining years of his life to the effort of diffusing a better acquaintance with this neglected therapeutic weapon among his colleagues. When an eminent clinical teacher like Semmola, whose lectures on therapeutics were translated into German under the supervision of and with a preface by Nothnagel, writes of hydrotherapy "frequently real marvels of restoration in severe and desperate cases have been obtained by it," and this opinion has been echoed by Kussmaul in Germany, Charcot in France, and our own Draper and others of, equal credibility in their respective countries, who were not specialists in this branch, it becomes the duty of every conscientious physician to investigate and utilize it. To facilitate the latter this work has been written from the standpoint of the family and hospital physician. Each edition has been carefully revised, that which has been disproved has been eliminated, and all modern ideas have been incorporated. It has been the aim of the author to continue in the third edition the attitude ascribed to him by a reviewer of the German translation in the Berliner klinische Wonhenschrift, viz., as "the true friend at the bedside of the sick and suffering - a friend from whom one may draw counsel on all difficult questions of practice, with the assurance that only that which has been proven, sedulously examined, and critically sifted will be received for the benefit of the sick." Book The Uses of Water in Health and Disease

Download or read book The Uses of Water in Health and Disease written by John Harvey Kellogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Uses of Water in Health and Disease: A Practical Treatise on the Bath, Its History and Uses Since the announcement of the alleged discovery of Priessnitz, about fifty years ago, there has been no scarcity of books upon "Hydropathy," "Water-Cure," and kindred topics. With rare exceptions, these works have been, in reality, little better than advertising mediums for some individual or institution. As might be expected in works prepared for such purposes, they have contained numerous and flagrant exaggerations of the effects of water as a remedial agent, often representing it as a specific for certain maladies and a sure preventive of others. These extravagant accounts, together with various absurd teachings relating to methods of application, have rendered just the popular verdict indicated by the fact that the dingy shelves of nearly every second-hand book store in New York and Philadelphia, as well as other large cities, are laden with these musty old volumes which rest beneath the accumulated dust of years. The objects of this work may be briefly summarized as follows: 1. To present a careful and candid account of the nature of water and its physiological effects. 2. To explain the effects of water when used as a remedy for disease, and to demonstrate its value as a remedial agent. 3. To show that the employment of water in the treatment of disease has been practiced by the most eminent physicians of all ages, and is not a modern discovery.
