Book excerpt: In the tropics, ongoing departure from the long-term climate average is more rapid and significant than anywhere on the planet, predicted to reach unprecedented conditions as early as 2020. Moreover, low latitudes harbor the majority of developing nations with limited capital available for monitoring water resources and climate change. As climate change intensifies, the interaction between altered precipitation regimes and modified vegetation and soil associated with expanding agricultural and pastoral land use can reduce the intrinsic resilience of watersheds and the ecosystems and societies they support. In this dissertation I provide insight into how climate change and land use affect watershed hydrology and channel morphology in the data-poor humid mountain tropics. I identified an unique expression of geomorphic equilibrium in mountain river channels relative to conventional metrics of geomorphic balance derived from temperate and semi-arid regions. Using physically based modeling of surface and subsurface hydrology paired with field-based channel measurements, I evaluated the response exhibited by watersheds in tectonically active steep mountain terrain under existing and altered climate and land cover scenarios. Watersheds converted from forest to pasture exhibit greater peak flow events, lower base flow and reduced resilience to increased rainfall intensity. My efforts provide a rapid and inexpensive procedure for deciphering the effects of land use and climate change without need for long-term datasets or a spatially comprehensive description of subsurface heterogeneity, allowing local resource management efforts to broaden to the watershed scale.

Book excerpt: In view of the rapidly expanding urban, industrial and agri cultural water requirements in many areas and the normally associated critical unreliability of surface water supplies in arid and semi-arid zones, groundwater exploration and use is of fundamental importance for logical economic development. Two interrelated facets should be evident in all such groundwater projects : (a) definition of groundwater recharge mechanisms and characteristics for identified geological formations, in order to determine whether exploitation in the long-term involves 'mining' of an es sentially 'fossil' resource or withdrawal from a dynamic supply. A solution to this aspect is essential for development of a re source management policy: (b) determination of recharge variability in time and space to thus enable determination of total aquifer input and to quantify such practical aspects as 'minimum risk' waste disposal locations and artificial recharge potential via (e.g.) devegetation or engi neering works. However, current international developments relating to natural recharge indicate the following 'problems' ; no single comprehensive estimation technique can yet be iden tified from the spectrum of methods available; all are reported to give suspect results.

However, although the role of water is seen everywhere, it is seen at its best in those regions where the climates are wet enough to support a forest vegetation with a continuous canopy. The seasonal fluctuations in the character of precipitation with snow in winter and rain in summer which characterize cool temperate forest climates and the legacies of recent past cold periods in high latitudes means that the landforms of the humid tropics should be regarded as the "normal" or "type" features due to erosion by running water.This discussion of humid landforms, together with J. A. Mabbutt's volume "Desert Landforms" completes a series of seven volumes on systematic geomorphology. It attempts to break with traditional approaches and to discuss humid landforms from the standpoint of the humid tropics. In addition, it seeks to demonstrate that the processes creating and destroying landforms are also those that regulate biotic activity at the earth's surface. The approach followed in this book is to describe the processes affecting the evolution of landforms in terms of the circulations of energy, water and materials before introducing the complication of legacies of different ages from the past. Theories of landform evolution are briefly reviewed in the final chapter.
