Book excerpt: This important monograph is based on the results of a study on the identification of conceptual lumped rainfall-runoff models for gauged and ungauged catchments. The task of model identification remains difficult despite decades of research. A detailed problem analysis and an extensive review form the basis for the development of a Matlab- modelling toolkit consisting of two components: a Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Toolbox (RRMT) and a Monte Carlo Analysis Toolbox (MCAT). These are subsequently applied to study the tasks of model identification and evaluation. A novel dynamic identifiability approach has been developed for the gauged catchment case. The theory underlying the application of rainfall-runoff models for predictions in ungauged catchments is studied, problems are highlighted and promising ways to move forward are investigated. Modelling frameworks for both gauged and ungauged cases are developed. This book presents the first extensive treatment of rainfall-runoff model identification in gauged and ungauged catchments."

One way to address this problem is to improve hydrologic modeling capability through the use of spatial data and spatially distributed physically based models. This dissertation is composed of three papers focused on 1) the use of spatially distributed hydrologic models with spatially distributed precipitation inputs, 2) advanced multi-objective calibration techniques that estimate parameter uncertainty and use stream gauge and temperature data from multiple locations, and 3) an examination of the relationship between high-resolution soils data and streamflow recession for use in a priori parameter estimation in ungauged catchments. This research contributes to the broad quest to reduce uncertainty in predictions at ungauged basins by integrating developments of innovative modeling techniques with analyses that advance our understanding of natural systems.

Circular data arise in many scientific contexts whether it be angular directions such as: observed compass directions of departure of radio-collared migratory birds from a release point; bond angles measured in different molecules; wind directions at different times of year at a wind farm; direction of stress-fractures in concrete bridge supports; longitudes of earthquake epicentres or seasonal and daily activity patterns, for example: data on the times of day at which animals are caught in a camera trap, or in 911 calls in New York, or in internet traffic; variation throughout the year in measles incidence, global energy requirements, TV viewing figures or injuries to athletes. The natural way of representing such data graphically is as points located around the circumference of a circle, hence their name. Importantly, circular variables are periodic in nature and the origin, or zero point, such as the beginning of a new year, is defined arbitrarily rather than necessarily emerging naturally from the system. This book will be of value both to those new to circular data analysis as well as those more familiar with the field. For beginners, the authors start by considering the fundamental graphical and numerical summaries used to represent circular data before introducing distributions that might be used to model them. They go on to discuss basic forms of inference such as point and interval estimation, as well as formal significance tests for hypotheses that will often be of scientific interest. When discussing model fitting, the authors advocate reduced reliance on the classical von Mises distribution; showcasing distributions that are capable of modelling features such as asymmetry and varying levels of kurtosis that are often exhibited by circular data. Quantitative and qualitative information regarding streamflow is needed for several practical application intended at various locations. However, lack of historical streamflow records makes its prediction in ungauged catchments a daunting task. Most of the catchments present across the globe are either partially gauged or completely ungauged. The scenario worsens in case of developing countries. The subject of 'prediction in ungauged basins' (PUB) is not prevalent in India. Regionalization is an alternative way for streamflow prediction in ungauged catchments. The present study deals with few regionalization approach for daily streamflow estimation in thirty-two identified catchments located in the Eastern and Southern India. The first category of regionalization i.e. hydrologic model-dependent approach is carried out using spatial proximity [Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Kriging and Global mean], regression analysis and physical similarity in conjunction with Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for streamflow estimation in each catchment considered as ungauged in turn. The other type is hydrologic model-independent regionalization which is carried out using Flow Duration Curve (FDC). Area-Index, IDW, Kriging and regression analysis are the techniques used for information transfer from donor to receiver catchments. IDW and Kriging are the two techniques based on geographical distance between gauged and ungauged catchments produced superior results among all the implemented techniques in terms of Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE)-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR) and Percent Bias (PBIAS). SWAT based regionalization techniques displayed better capability for capturing the variation in daily streamflow than regional FDC based approach. This study investigates alternative methods based on the classification of catchments according to their flow regime, the assignment of ungauged catchments to a class based on physical characteristics of the catchment, and the use of similarity measures to transfer parameters from gauged to ungauged catchments. This report considers the methods that can be adopted in this type of approach, and the many variations that must be considered in their implementation. The methods are examined using a set of 99 catchments from the UK, and are seen to be efficacious in estimating the unit hydrograph time to peak and standard percentage runoff, as defined by the UK Flood Studies Report. A step-by-step guide and worked example show how the method can be applied in practice.

Book excerpt: Water is a fundamental resource, essential for human activities and underpinning economic and environmental sustainability. As such, management of water resources is a critical task, even more so in this time of climate uncertainty and change. Though hydrologic models have long been used to address water resource management, there is a growing desire to develop more reliable, transferable, and physically meaningful hydrologic models in light of data scarcity and uncertainty. In this dissertation, the three primary topics of (1) statistical implementation of models under uncertainty, (2) hydrologic model development, and (3) model applicability/transferability under data scarcity are considered. As a result of this research, we have: (1) developed methods for improved statistical implementation of hydrologic models through the development of a formal likelihood function for ephemeral catchments, the creation of a framework for identifying adequate likelihood functions across catchment conditions, and the introduction of a time domain transformation that was not previously used in hydrologic modeling; (2) developed a new model of catchment hydrologic connectivity based on extensive empirical observations that was shown to be consistent with both external and internal hydrologic variables, as well as transferable; and (3) introduced a new hierarchical Bayesian approach that was shown to accurately quantify uncertainty at an ungauged catchment based on pooled information from similar gauged catchments. This dissertation is divided into six key chapters/manuscripts that each address various aspects involved in improving hydrologic model performance, whose cumulative contribution results in a better understanding of how to construct, implement, and apply hydrologic models to lead to improved water resource management and planning problems of societal importance.

Book excerpt: River stage or flow rates are required for the design and evaluation of hydraulic structures. Most river reaches are ungauged and a methodology is needed to estimate the stages, or rates of flow, at specific locations in streams where no measurements are available. Flood routing techniques are utilised to estimate the stages, or rates of flow, in order to predict flood wave propagation along river reaches. Models can be developed for gauged catchments and their parameters related to physical characteristics such as slope, reach width, reach length so that the approach can be applied to ungauged catchments in the region. The objective of this study is to assess Muskingum-based methods for flow routing in ungauged river reaches, both with and without lateral inflows. Using observed data, the model parameters were calibrated to assess performance of the Muskingum flood routing procedures and the Muskingum-Cunge method was then assessed using catchment derived parameters for use in ungauged river reaches. The Muskingum parameters were derived from empirically estimated variables and variables estimated from assumed river cross-sections within the selected river reaches used. Three sub-catchments in the Thukela catchment in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa were selected for analyses, with river lengths of 4, 21 and 54 km. The slopes of the river reaches and reach lengths were derived from a digital elevation model. Manning roughness coefficients were estimated from field observations. Flow variables such as velocity, hydraulic radius, wetted perimeters, flow depth and top flow width were determined from empirical equations and cross-sections of the selected rivers. Lateral inflows to long river reaches were estimated from the Saint-Venant equation. Observed events were extracted for each sub-catchment to assess the Muskingum-Cunge parameter estimation method and Three-parameter Muskingum method. The extracted events were further analysed using empirically estimated flow variables. The performances of the methods were evaluated by comparing both graphically and statistically the simulated and observed hydrographs. Sensitivity analyses were undertaken using three selected events and a 50% variation in selected input variables was used to identify sensitive variables. The performance of the calibrated Muskingum-Cunge flood routing method using observed hydrographs displayed acceptable results. Therefore, the Muskingum-Cunge flood routing method was applied in ungauged catchments, with variables estimated empirically. The results obtained shows that the computed outflow hydrographs generated using the Muskingum-Cunge method, with the empirically estimated variables and variables estimated from cross-sections of the selected rivers resulted in reasonably accurate computed outflow hydrographs with respect to peak discharge, timing of peak flow and volume. From this study, it is concluded that the Muskingum-Cunge method can be applied to route floods in ungauged catchments in the Thukela catchment and it is postulated that the method can be used to route floods in other ungauged rivers in South Africa.
