Book excerpt: A mechanistic model has been developed which for the first time considers the effect of hydrogen entry into a metal on the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (h.e.r.). The model enables computation of: 1) the hydrogen surface coverage and surface concentration; 2) the hydrogen adsorption, absorption, discharge and recombination rate constants; and 3) the h.e.r. coverage-dependent transfer coefficient, alpha and the exchange current density io, from a knowledge of the steady state hydrogen permeation current, cathodic charging current, hydrogen overvoltage and hydrogen diffusivity. The model predicts a linear relationship between permeation flux and square-root of the hydrogen recombination flux and provides an analytical method to determine the cathodic potential range for operation of a coupled discharge-recombination mechanism of the h.e.r. With modifications the model can treat permeation data for which 1) the mechanics of the discharge step involve a (proposed) selvedge reaction; and 2) surface hydrogen coverages are relatively high as in the presence of poisons (e.g., H2S or As2O3). Some of the existing literature data for hydrogen permeation in iron and nickel in acid and alkaline solutions are successfully analyzed. Book excerpt: This Grant focused on the investigation of the factors which affect hydrogen entry and permeation into metals/alloys that by themselves or in combination with other materials are used under conditions for which hydrogen embrittlement and cracking are a major concern. Factors that affect H entry include a broad range of metallurgical, environmental and interface properties such as adsorption, surface segregation, surface films and recesses in the surface. Research during this grant period focused on understanding how these parameters control hydrogen entry. The specific investigations included both aqueous and gas phase charging of hydrogen, utilizing primarily electrochemical techniques, in particular hydrogen permeation with the IPZ model, and microscopic methods in the case of aqueous phase charging, and ultra high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in the case of gas phase charging.

Its small mass and strong interaction with the host electrons and nuclei are responsible for many anomalous and interesting solid state effects. In addition, hydrogen in metals gives rise to a number of technological problems such as hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen storage, radiation hardening, first wall problems associated with nuclear fusion reactors, and degradation of the fuel cladding in fission reactors. Both the fundamental effects and applied problems have stimulated a great deal of inter est in the study of metal hydrogen systems in recent years. This is evident from a growing list of publications as well as several international conferences held in this field during the past decade. It is clear that a fundamental understanding of these problems re quires a firm knowledge of the basic interactions between hydrogen, host metal atoms, intrinsic lattice defects and electrons. This understanding is made particularly difficult by hyrogen's small mass and by the large lattice distortions that accompany the hydrogenation process. The purpose of the "International Symposium on the Electronic Structure and Properties of Hydrogen in Metals" held in Richmond, Virginia, March 4-6, 1982 was to increase our fundamental under standing of hydrogen in metals. Such knowledge is essential in solving technologically important questions. The symposium con sisted of twenty-two invited papers and seventy-two contributed poster presentations and attracted nearly 150 participants from thirteen countries. The proceedings of this symposium constitute this book.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes results of the past year on our continuing experiments directed to the problem of hydrogen entry and degradation of materials both of planar surfaces and for the more complicated recessed surface. For the planar surface the hydrogen permeation and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) techniques were used, and for the recessed surface the study used the hydrogen permeation technique and a microscopy/electrochemical probe technique. Microstructural effects and the role of microbes are also under study. In aqueous solutions both IR drop and acidification within recesses in iron surfaces were found to enhance proton reduction and hydrogen absorption. In addition, it was found that flat, smooth surfaces can form or develop recesses as a result of corrosion or other reasons, e.g., grain boundary grooves that form during corrosion of Cr-depleted alloy in sensitized stainless steel. These recesses were found to be just as prone to proton discharge and hydrogen absorption as pre-existing recesses. Distributions of anodic and cathodic reaction sites were analyzed within a propagating crack under cathodic protection conditions using an IR based model. Results are presented of STM studies of hydrogen adsorption from the gas phase on silicon. jg.

Book excerpt: Due to its small size, the hydrogen atom is, wanted or unwanted, an ubiquitous diffusant in many metallic systems. It has long been known for its harmful effect upon mild steel sheet; the deleterious phenomenon of hydrogen-embrittlement having been recognized since the early days of the industrial revolution. Its behavior in some metals is further complicated by its tendency to form hydrides with the metal, or with various non-metallic impurities. The ability of some metals and alloys to store large quantities of hydrogen - first recognized in the 19th century - is another complicating factor. The complexity of metal-hydrogen behavior was undoubtedly also the cause of the mistaken 'cold fusion' claims of the late 1980s. The present issue comprises a compilation of hydrogen diffusion and permeation data in metals. These data are believed to be 'pure': that is, free from the interfering effects of hydride formation, etc. The almost 600 entries, 201 tables and 41 figures cover the period from 1966 to 2013. These are supplemented by an original review, by T.B.Flanagan of the University of Vermont, which has as its subject, The Role of the Thermodynamic Factor in Hydrogen Diffusion in Metal and Alloy Membranes.
