Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Ship Hydrodynamics: Fluid Mechanics, Ship Resistance and Propulsion Lothar Birk, University of New Orleans, USA Bridging the information gap between fluid mechanics and ship hydrodynamics Fundamentals of Ship Hydrodynamics is designed as a textbook for undergraduate education in ship resistance and propulsion. The book provides connections between basic training in calculus and fluid mechanics and the application of hydrodynamics in daily ship design practice. Based on a foundation in fluid mechanics, the origin, use, and limitations of experimental and computational procedures for resistance and propulsion estimates are explained. The book is subdivided into sixty chapters, providing background material for individual lectures. The unabridged treatment of equations and the extensive use of figures and examples enable students to study details at their own pace. Key features: • Covers the range from basic fluid mechanics to applied ship hydrodynamics. • Subdivided into 60 succinct chapters. • In-depth coverage of material enables self-study. • Around 250 figures and tables. Fundamentals of Ship Hydrodynamics is essential reading for students and staff of naval architecture, ocean engineering, and applied physics. This book was released on 2008-06-28 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Fluid- Structure Interaction in Ocean Engineering, held in Hamburg, July 23-26, 2007. The study of gravity driven water waves interacting with fixed or freely floating objects is an active and important field of research in ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of large amplitude ship motions or of marine structures in severe seas is still a delicate problem in the field of fluid-structure interaction. While three-dimensional panel methods have reached the state of maturity in linear sea-keeping analysis, the original problem, governed by strongly nonlinear boundary conditions, is far from being solved efficiently. The principal nonlinearities are associated with the variable wetted surface of the ship hull or the floating body and with the nonlinear hydrodynamic conditions on the free surface. Moreover, marine structures often must be modelled as multibody systems rather than a single body. This causes additional problems due to wave slamming on floating and fixed structures. Furthermore, problems such as coupled structural behavior of submerged or floating systems as well as various wind effects have to be considered for the proper design of offshore systems. This book collects contributions from leading scientists working on the following topics: Ocean waves, probabilistic models of sea waves, fluid-loading on structures including pipes, cables, drill-strings etc., behavior of floating systems, stability and capsizing of ships, coupled structural behavior, sloshing in tanks, CFD validation and verification.
Download or read book Basic Hydrodynamics written by A. C. Thompson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic Hydrodynamics explores the application of computers to problem solving involved in fluid flow. This book contains 5 chapters that cover the use of BASIC programming language in hydrodynamic problems and some programs with graphic output, as well as some simple finite difference, finite element and boundary element programs. After a brief introduction to BASIC programming, this book goes discussing the fundamentals of potential flow theory that will be used to calculate flows, which can be regarded as frictionless. These topics are followed by a presentation of some analytical expressions for potential flows. Chapter 3 outlines the computer based methods for solving problems within these flows, while Chapter 4 highlights some potential flow methods to the solution of groundwater flows. Exact solutions are also provided for comparison with the computer methods. Lastly, Chapter 5 considers free surface flows, such as linear waves and flows from jets. This work will be of value to engineers, designers, and computer programmers and scientists who are interested in computer application to hydrodynamics field.

Download or read book Experimental Hydrodynamics for Flow Around Bodies written by Viktor V. Babenko and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental Hydrodynamics for Flow around Bodies explains complex novel experimental methodologies to solve a wide range of important flow problems in industry and research. The book starts by examining the fundamental physical laws necessary for the optimization of techniques for hydro-aeromechanics, heat engineering, and other disciplines related to flow. The reader is then provided with detailed explanations of novel experimental methods, along with the results of physical research. These results are also necessary for the construction of theoretical models that provide improved descriptions for numerous problems in various scientific fields. Frequent discussions, examples of practical applications throughout the text, and foundational, theoretical materials help a range of readers engage and apply these methods to problems in fields including drag reduction, noiseless movement, optimal maneuvering, intense heat transfer, control of separated vortices, wind power, economical energy consumption, and more. - Provides instructions on the set up of innovative experiments for drag reduction that will be of great interest to researchers in aerospace, marine and automotive engineering - Describes, in detail, a variety of novel experiments to investigate boundary layer flow, together with experimental data that can be used with computational models - Assists with bio-inspired hydrodynamic design by providing models of a waving fin mover and investigations of analogs of hydrobiont skin covers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fascination of Fluid Dynamics contains a collection of papers by international experts in hydrodynamics, based on oral presentations at a symposium held in honour of Professor Leen van Wijngaarden on his 65th birthday. The book begins with a personal sketch of his life and scientific career. It continues with a mixture of papers that address recent developments in various branches of fluid mechanics. Many of the papers cover different aspects of multiphase flows: bubble dynamics, cavitation, bubbles and particles in turbulent flows, suspension flows, and wave phenomena in fluidised beds. Other topics that are addressed include: dynamics of jets, shock waves, MHD turbulence, selforganisation phenomena in 2D turbulence, vortex rings and the thermodynamics of tropical cyclones. This edited volume will be valuable reading for researchers, engineers and students interested in hydrodynamics, and in particular in multiphase flows.
