Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by W. H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Salinity Effects on Soil water Diffusivity

Download or read book Salinity Effects on Soil water Diffusivity written by Luiz Antonio Lima and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salt effects on water movement in usaturated Yolo loam soil are explored by comparing soil-water diffusivity values determined by Bruce and Klute's method in soil columns treated with SAR values 0,5 and 15 and wetted with water containing 15, 5, 2 and 0 me/l. Sorptivity values for these conditions are also compared. Total soil solution concentration estimated by electrical conductivity measurements and NA and CA concentrations measured by flame photometry are discused. Salt effects on soil-water diffusivity were more pronounced at larger values of water content. Movement of water in Ca-saturated samples was significantly affected only when the soil solution concentration was smaller than approximately 2 me/l. Soil samples treated with SAR 5 presented reductions in soil-water diffusivity when the solution concentration was equal to or smaller than approximately 3,5 me/l and the water content larger than 0,35 cm3/cm3. The soil-water diffusivity was also affected when the solution concentration was equal to or smaller than approximately 2 me/l and the water content larger then 0,30 cm3/cm3. Soil-water diffusivity of samples treated with SAR 15 was affected basically at all values of water content when the soil solution concentration was equal to or smaller than approximately 3,5 me/l. When such concentration was a large as 5 me/l, reductions in soil-water diffusivity were apparent only for water contents larger than 0,25 cm3/cm3. Chemical analyses of soil solution after infiltration revelated that most soluble salts in the soil column were carried near the wetting front. Significant displacement of Na by Ca occurred in soils treated with SAR 5 and 15. Although Bruce and Klute's method does not apply for chemically unstable and swelling soils, the slope of the plot of distance to the wetting front versus square root of time fitted the Boltzman variable for the water content of wetting front satisfactorily. This fact suggests good reliabillity of reported soil-water diffusivity values.

Book Hydrological Systems Modeling Volume II

Download or read book Hydrological Systems Modeling Volume II written by Lev S. Kuchment and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-06-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrological Systems Modeling is a component of Encyclopedia of Water Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. This 2-volume set contains several chapters, each of size 5000-30000 words, with perspectives, applications and extensive illustrations. It carries state-of-the-art knowledge in the fields of Hydrological Systems Modeling and is aimed, by virtue of the several applications, at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Book Transport Processes in Porous Media

Download or read book Transport Processes in Porous Media written by Jacob Bear and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited lectures presented during the NATO/ASI conducted in Pullman, Washington, July 9-18, 1989. This is the third in a series of NATO/ASIs on transport phenomena in porous media. The first two, which took place at Newark, Delaware in 1982 and 1985, are devoted to various topics related to the Fundamentals of Transport Processes in Porous Media. The contents of the books resulting from previous NATO/ASIs are given at the end of this book. Transport of extensive quantities such as mass of a fluid phase, mass of chemical species carried by a fluid phase, energy and electric charge in porous media, as encountered in a large variety of engineering disciplines, is an emerging interdisciplinary field. The groundwater flow, the simultaneous flow of gas, oil and water in petroleum reservoirs, the movement and accumulation of pollutants in the saturated and unsaturated subsurface zones, thermal energy storage in reservoirs, land subsidence in response to charges in overburden loads, or to pumping of fluids from underground formations, wave propagation in seismic investigations or as produced by earthquakes, chemical reactors, water flow through sand filters and the movement of fluids through kidneys, may serve as examples of fields in which the theory of transport in porous media is employed.

Book Saline and Sodic Soils

Download or read book Saline and Sodic Soils written by E. Bresler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In keeping with the spirit of an Advanced Series in the Agricultural Sciences, we have attempted to address herein most of the current research areas being used to characterize, describe and manage salt-affected soils. Because of a certain amount of personal bias inherent in our individual viewpoints and backgrounds, some areas have been accorded more emphasis than others. It has been our goal, however, to provide either detail about, or at least a recent reference to, each major area of current soil salinity research. This information, coupled with what we hope to be a rather logical progression from descriptive material on equilibrium or near-equilibrium soil chemistry, through transport processes, to eventual management practices including some elementary economic decisions, should enable the reader to bridge the gap from introductory soil chemistry or soil physics texts to the basic literature of this area. The text will be perceived by the astute reader as somewhat uneven in its treatment of respective sections. We feel that this is to a certain extent appropriate, for it thus portrays the unevenness of progress to date in the corresponding areas of research. The management of saline and sodic soils remains largely an empirical semi-science or even art, whereas transport phenomena are normally dealt with in a much more theoretical (and also a much more highly mathematical) vein. Equilibrium soil chemistry has historically occupied an intermediate position with respect to its mix of empiricism and theoretical rigor.
