Book Hydro mechanical Coupled Creep Behaviour of Boom Clay

Download or read book Hydro mechanical Coupled Creep Behaviour of Boom Clay written by Weizhong Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-01-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creep behaviour, especially for underground radioactive waste disposal facilities, whose storage period far exceed the service time of most of the civil engineering underground facilities, is very significant. Boom Clay, an argillaceous rock chosen as a reasonable geological barrier in Belgium is first systematically studied in this book. A series of research tools such as laboratory experiments (4 years), field measurements (20 years), theoretical studies, back analysis and numerical simulations are used to study the mechanical behavior of this rock. Firstly, laboratory studies such as oedometer tests, HM triaxial tests, HM triaxial creep tests and SEM tests, etc. intuitively show the nonlinear behaviour of the argillaceous rock and it provides a basis for the theoretical studies. Secondly, considering the anisotropic mechanical properties and nonlinear creep potential of Boom Clay, a relatively complete theoretical system has been established. Thirdly, based on the field measurements in the last few decades, using back analysis method, the theoretical studies are verified. Finally, based on the study above, long term stability analysis of the underground disposal facilities is implemented and the risks facing future generations in the event of failure in the disposal system are also quantified through numerical simulation.

Book Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste in Deep Clay Formations

Download or read book Geological Disposal of Radioactive Waste in Deep Clay Formations written by X.L. Li and published by Geological Society of London Special Publications. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of research into the geological disposal of radioactive waste in Belgium, the HADES underground research laboratory (URL) was constructed in a clay formation in the early 1980s. This was the world's first purpose-built URL in a deep clay formation. Over the past four decades, the HADES URL has played an important role in the research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of geological disposal. It enabled the in situ characterization of the clay host rock, it allowed experiments to be performed under realistic geological conditions and it demonstrated the feasibility of constructing, operating and closing underground repositories. This volume presents several key contributions of the HADES URL to both Belgian and international research into geological disposal. It not only compiles some important RD&D results, but also illustrates the essential role URLs such as the HADES URL have played in developing concepts for the geological disposal of radioactive waste.

Book Distinct Element Modelling in Geomechanics

Download or read book Distinct Element Modelling in Geomechanics written by K.R. Saxena and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linear mathematical assumptions for procedures in other branches of engineering have little relevance for geoengineering, which must accommodate non-linear behaviors. Contributors to eight papers apply the breakthrough numerical modeling Distinct Element Method (Cundall, late 1960s). The design philosophy for structures or excavations in geotechnical engineering is different from that followed for fabricated materials like steel and concrete. The designer has little data both with regard to geological weaknesses and strength and deformation characteristics of materials before finalizing the designs. Also these characteristics vary from place to place. In-situ stresses due to gravity and tectonics and transient forces imposed due to rainfall and earthquakes make the matter more complicated. The pore waters carry the load initially before passing it on to the solids. For the analytical procedure, to be realistic, it should account for large displacements and non-linear behaviour including strain-softening. Because of these considerations, the designers have followed procedures based on simplifying assumptions such as linear, small strain, elastoplastic behaviour. Numerical procedures based on such assumptions, though very popular in other branches of engineering, have made little impact in geo-engineering. An attempt has been made in this book to compile the recent use of distinct element codes for solutions of some of the problems in geomechanics — particularly those involving excavations. It is hoped that it will provide an opportunity for the fraternity of geotechnical engineers to appreciate the opening of new frontiers in the use of computers for solving more challenging geotechnical problems.

Book Clays in Natural and Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement

Download or read book Clays in Natural and Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement written by S. Norris and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Publication contains 43 scientific studies presented at the 5th conference on ‘Clays in natural and engineered barriers for radioactive waste confinement’ held in Montpellier, France in 2012. The conference and this resulting volume cover all the aspects of clay characterization and behaviour considered at various temporal and spatial scales relevant to the confinement of radionuclides in clay, from basic phenomenological process descriptions to the global understanding of performance and safety at repository and geological scales. Special emphasis has been given to the modelling of processes occurring at the mineralogical level within the clay barriers. The papers in this Special Publication consider research into argillaceous media under the following topic areas: large-scale geological characterization; clay-based concept/large-scale experiments; hydrodynamical modelling; geochemistry; geomechanics; mass transfer/gas transfer; mass transfer mechanisms. The collection of different topics presented in this Special Publication demonstrates the diversity of geological repository research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to long-range surface forces sig nificant far beyond a single monolayer and felt over tens or even hundreds of molecular layers adjacent to an interface. The transi tion from the concept of short-range effects that reigned earlier to the concept of long-range forces simultaneously signified the transition from a two-dimensional world to a three-dimensional one, incomparably richer in physicochemical phenomena. This transition took many years and evolved through many steps. It began with the Gouy-Chapman theory of diffuse ionic atmospheres, which together with London's theory of molecular forces was used as a basis for the development (beginning in 1937) of the DLVO theory of stability of lyophobic colloids. Further elaboration of the theory involved the introduction of new types of force, and a generalization (in 1954) to the case of interaction between unlike particles (hetero coagulation). This theory is fundamental in such large-scale prac tical problems as flotation, water treatment, dyeing, soil science, microbiology, and interaction between biological cells. This book is the first comprehensive monograph devoted to sur face forces. This fact makes it easier to attract the reader's interest; yet, the reader's demands become all the more difficult to satisfy completely. Indeed, the research that we review and analyze here covers about 50 years of work. Much data has been amassed, so that the main problem was a careful selection and an alysis.
