Download or read book Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts written by Federal Highway Federal Highway Administration and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts, Third Edition Hydraulic Design Series Number 5 (HDS 5) originally merged culvert design information contained in Hydraulic Engineering Circulars (HEC) 5, 10, and 13 with other related hydrologic, storage routing and special culvert design information. This third edition is the first major rewrite of HDS 5 since 1985, updating all previous information and adding new information on software solutions, aquatic organism passage, culvert assessment, and culvert repair and rehabilitation. The result is a comprehensive culvert design publication. The appendices of the publication contain the equations and methodology used in developing the design charts (nomographs) and software programs, information on hydraulic resistance of culverts, the commonly used design charts, and Design Guidelines (DG) illustrating various culvert design calculation procedures. The number of design charts provided has been reduced recognizing the increased use of software solutions; however, the full set of culvert design charts will continue to be available in the archived second edition of HDS 5. Book Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts

Download or read book Hydraulic Design of Highway Culverts written by Jerome Morrow Normann and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic Design series No. 5 combines culvert design information previously contained in Hydraulic Engineering Circulars (HEC) No. 5, No. 10, and No. 13 with hydrologic, storage routing, and special culvert design information. The result is a comprehensive culvert design publication. Hydrologic analysis methods are described, and references cited. Culvert design methods are presented for both conventional culverts and culverts with inlet improvements. Storage routing techniques are included which permit the designer to account for ponding effects upstream of the culvert. Unique culvert applications, erosion and sediment control, debris control, structural aspects, and long-span culverts are discussed and references cited. Inlet control, outlet control, and critical depth design charts, many of which are newly developed, are included for a variety of culverts sizes, shapes, and materials. New dimensionless culvert design charts are provided for the design of culverts lacking conventional design nomographs and charts. The appendices of the publication contain the equations and methodology used to construct the design charts, information of the hydraulic resistance of culverts, and methods of optimizing culvert design using performance curves and inlet depression. Calculation forms are provided for most of the design methodologies in the manual. The second edition corrected minor errors and provided both SI and English (U.S. customary) units for all equations and design charts.

Book Sizing of Highway Culverts and Bridges

Download or read book Sizing of Highway Culverts and Bridges written by Bruce M. McEnroe and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the methods and criteria that highway engineers have used to size culverts and bridges in Kansas and throughout the U.S. from the start of highway construction to the present. The focus is directed to methods actually employed by highway engineers rather than methods described in the research literature. Hydrologic methods are categorized as early or modern, according to whether a specific recurrence interval is associated with the design. Modern hydrologic methods are based on statistical analyses of systematic records of streamflow or rainfall data; the desired recurrence interval is an input to the design. In the early days, culverts and bridges were sized by empirical methods developed from experiences with existing structures during floods.
