Book Hyde Park in the Gilded Age

Download or read book Hyde Park in the Gilded Age written by Carney Rhinevault and published by Images of America (Arcadia Pub. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyde Park was established in 1821 as a simple and small town on the Hudson River. Its claim to fame, however, and what attracts people still to this day, are the grand estates, lush landscapes, and lavish lifestyles of some of those who lived there. Wealthy families like the Vanderbilts, Rogerses, Roosevelts, Dinsmores, and Millses built homes to match their place in society. These estates popped up along the river during the Gilded Age. Hyde Park was a perfect location because of its easy access to New York City, where culture and society could be found, while providing country living along the Hudson for the many outdoor pleasures the wealthy enjoyed. One part of this work shows the wealthy river families, whose houses were built by prominent architects and filled with treasures from abroad. Other images show the families who worked as coachmen, gardeners, and parlor maids and made the lifestyles of the rich possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tampa's Hyde Park was a beautifully located frontier that was not discovered until the latter part of the 19th century. Scattered tiny settlements were farmed and fished along Hillsborough Bay. The fine climate and natural resources lingered until Henry B. Plant arrived with his railroad and steamship line in 1884. Then, like magic, Hyde Park exploded into a visionary community. O.H. Platt created Hyde Park's original subdivision, and Plant opened a fanciful jewel of America's Gilded Age, the Tampa Bay Hotel. In less than 10 years, the backwater that was located along the western edge of Hillsborough Bay became Florida's first magic kingdom. As the Victorian period ended and the 20th century emerged, Hyde Park embraced the aesthetics and cultural changes of the new century. Bungalows dominated new housing in Hyde Park, providing architectural modernism for the emerging middle class. Today, Hyde Park has among the largest intact collections of Craftsman and Prairie houses in the United States.

Book The Gilded Age in New York 1870 1910

Download or read book The Gilded Age in New York 1870 1910 written by Esther Crain and published by Black Dog & Leventhal. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drama, expansion, mansions and wealth of New York City's transformative Gilded Age era, from 1870 to 1910, captured in a magnificently illustrated hardcover. In forty short years, New York City suddenly became a city of skyscrapers, subways, streetlights, and Central Park, as well as sprawling bridges that connected the once-distant boroughs. In Manhattan, more than a million poor immigrants crammed into tenements, while the half of the millionaires in the entire country lined Fifth Avenue with their opulent mansions. The Gilded Age in New York captures what is was like to live in Gotham then, to be a daily witness to the city's rapid evolution. Newspapers, autobiographies, and personal diaries offer fascinating glimpses into daily life among the rich, the poor, and the surprisingly large middle class. The use of photography and illustrated periodicals provides astonishing images that document the bigness of New York: the construction of the Statue of Liberty; the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge; the shimmering lights of Luna Park in Coney Island; the mansions of Millionaire's Row. Sidebars detail smaller, fleeting moments: Alice Vanderbilt posing proudly in her "Electric Light" ball gown at a society-changing masquerade ball; immigrants stepping off the boat at Ellis Island; a young Theodore Roosevelt witnessing Abraham Lincoln's funeral. The Gilded Age in New York is a rare illustrated look at this amazing time in both the city and the country as a whole. Author Esther Crain, the go-to authority on the era, weaves first-hand accounts and fascinating details into a vivid tapestry of American society at the turn of the century. Praise for New-York Historical Society New York City in 3D In The Gilded Age, also by Esther Crain: "Vividly captures the transformation from cityscape of horse carriages and gas lamps 'bursting with beauty, power and possibilities' as it staggered into a skyscraping Imperial City." -- Sam Roberts, The New York Times "Get a glimpse of Edith Wharton's world." -- Entertainment Weekly Must List "What better way to revisit this rich period . . ?" -- Library Journal

Book Hidden History of the Mid Hudson Valley

Download or read book Hidden History of the Mid Hudson Valley written by Carney Rhinevault and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Albany Post Road was the vital artery between New York City and the state capital in Albany in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It saw a host of interesting events and colorful characters, though these unusual and extraordinary stories, as well as their connection to the thoroughfare, are oft forgotten. Revolutionary War spies marched this path, and anti-rent wars rocked Columbia County. Underground Railroad safe houses in nearby towns like Rhinebeck and Fishkill sheltered slaves seeking freedom in Canada, and Frank Teal's Dutchess County murder remains unsolved. With illustrations by Tatiana Rhinevault, local historian Carney Rhinevault presents these and other hidden stories from the Albany Post Road in New York's mid-Hudson Valley.

Book Elliott and Eleanor Roosevelt

Download or read book Elliott and Eleanor Roosevelt written by Geraldine Hawkins and published by Black Dome Press. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full-length illustrated biography of Elliott Roosevelt (1860-1894), brother to President Theodore Roosevelt and father to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, with extensive background information on the ancestors and extended family of Theodore and Elliott and the relationship between Elliott and the young Eleanor, who was left an orphan at age 10 when her father died at age 34. The book charts Elliott's happy early years growing up in one of the foremost and most respected families in New York City, through his late teens and early twenties as he traveled extensively through the still-wild American West, Europe, the Middle East and South Asia, his marriage to Anna Hall and their early years together as favorites among New York City society, the birth of his children, and then his precipitous decline into severe alcoholism and depression, estrangement from his family, attempts at recovery, and final tragic days following the death of first his wife, then his youngest son, and the collapse of his promising business enterprise, leading him to suicidal despair--but all the while, somehow, remaining a loving (and loved) father to Eleanor.
