Book excerpt: For millions of people around the world, Tibet is a domain of undisturbed tradition, the Dalai Lama a spiritual guide. By contrast, the Tibet Museum opened in Lhasa by the Chinese in 1999 was designed to reclassify Tibetan objects as cultural relics and the Dalai Lama as obsolete. Suggesting that both these views are suspect, Clare E. Harris argues in The Museum on the Roof of the World that for the past one hundred and fifty years, British and Chinese collectors and curators have tried to convert Tibet itself into a museum, an image some Tibetans have begun to contest. This bookis a powerful account of the museums created by, for, or on behalf of Tibetans and the nationalist agendas that have played out in them. Harris begins with the British public's first encounter with Tibetan culture in 1854. She then examines the role of imperial collectors and photographers in representations of the region and visits competing museums of Tibet in India and Lhasa. Drawing on fieldwork in Tibetan communities, she also documents the activities of contemporary Tibetan artists as they try to displace the utopian visions of their country prevalent in the West, as well as the negative assessments of their heritage common in China. Illustrated with many previously unpublished images, this book addresses the pressing question of who has the right to represent Tibet in museums and beyond.

Download or read book Being Material written by Marie-Pier Boucher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations of the many ways of being material in the digital age. In his oracular 1995 book Being Digital, Nicholas Negroponte predicted that social relations, media, and commerce would move from the realm of “atoms to bits”—that human affairs would be increasingly untethered from the material world. And yet in 2019, an age dominated by the digital, we have not quite left the material world behind. In Being Material, artists and technologists explore the relationship of the digital to the material, demonstrating that processes that seem wholly immaterial function within material constraints. Digital technologies themselves, they remind us, are material things—constituted by atoms of gold, silver, silicon, copper, tin, tungsten, and more. The contributors explore five modes of being material: programmable, wearable, livable, invisible, and audible. Their contributions take the form of reports, manifestos, philosophical essays, and artist portfolios, among other configurations. The book's cover merges the possibilities of paper with those of the digital, featuring a bookmark-like card that, when “seen” by a smartphone, generates graphic arrangements that unlock films, music, and other dynamic content on the book's website. At once artist's book, digitally activated object, and collection of scholarship, this book both demonstrates and chronicles the many ways of being material. Book excerpt: A stunning work on contemporary fashion spectacles, showcasing the most innovative, creative, and artistic high-fashion runway shows of the last twenty years. In recent years, as fashion shows have become a part of our collective imagination and an important part of contemporary culture, blockbuster productions have redefined the runway show as a form of entertainment and creativity on par with the clothes themselves. This book focuses on designers for whom fashion and the mode of presenting it have held equal significance: Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela, Hussein Chalayan, Viktor & Rolf, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Raf Simons, Thom Browne, and Imitation of Christ, among them. From the performance art spectacles of the first Alexander McQueen collections in the mid-1990s and the high-art concept shows of Hussein Chalayan in the late 1990s to the lavish beauty of Chanel haute couture in 2012, author Alix Browne explores the highest pinnacles of fashion today. Runway gives the reader full access to the theatrical and creative aspects of the production, in both intimate, little-seen runway shows from the pre-Internet era—many of the photographs here have never been published before—as well as major productions with elaborate sets and full-blown narrative. A thrilling, immersive, and inspiring look into the wide-ranging creativity of contemporary fashion, Runway is the most thorough book available on the subject. Featuring the most innovative fashion designers of the last twenty years, this book is a must for lovers of fashion and culture.

Book excerpt: Caroline Evans analyses the work of experimental designers, the images of fashion photographers, and the spectacular fashion shows that developed in the final decade of the twentieth century to arrive at a new understanding of fashion's dark side and what it signifies? Drawing on a variety of literary and theoretical perspectives - from Marx to Benjamin - Evans argues that fashion plays a leading role in constructing images and meanings during periods of rapid change. She shows persuasively that fashion stands at the very centre of the contemporary, where it voices some of Western culture's deepest concerns.

Book Materializing Memory in Art and Popular Culture

Download or read book Materializing Memory in Art and Popular Culture written by Laszlo Muntean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present, and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally, because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting. Chapters 1, 4, and 5 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 3.0 license.

Book Anrealage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kunihiko Morinaga
  • Publisher : Rizzoli Publications
  • Release : 2021-09-21
  • ISBN : 0847864863
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Anrealage written by Kunihiko Morinaga and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognized as one of the most innovative designers in contemporary fashion, Tokyo-based Anrealage is the brainchild of Kunihiko Morinaga. Born in 1980, Morinaga launched the brand in 2003, began showing in Tokyo in 2006 and Paris in 2014, and would later be the recipient of the Mainichi Grand Prize for design—Japan’s top fashion prize previously conferred to Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. Cerebral and tech-savvy, the Anrealage approach to design is forever putting high-concept theory into practice. Known principally for introducing photochromatic textiles into dresses that react and change colors in response to varying degrees of light, he has also received acclaim for juxtaposing contrasting textures with deconstructed elements to create unique silhouettes.A master of provocation, Morinaga has always been preoccupied byintegrating humanity with rapidly evolving technologies and is actually wary of modern society’s excesses. Bemoaning the smartphone’s impact on real world, person-to-person interaction, one of his most recent shows featured fabrics that repelled cellular signals. Anrealage has rightly won itself a devoted fashion following not only in Japan, but overseas as well, with recent insurgent collaborations with brands suchas Fendi, augmenting its growing influence with a firm grasp on how the street informs high fashion. Anrealage: A&Zis conceived as a celebration, approximating with printing effects (including augmented reality) some of the mystery and detailing associated with brand. The visual narrative itself provides an instructive look at the process of design from Morinaga’s own point of view—illustrating that he is at once comfortable with developing technologies and respectful of traditional approaches
