Book The Economic Consequences of Iran Closing the Strait of Hormuz

Download or read book The Economic Consequences of Iran Closing the Strait of Hormuz written by Nathanael Schabrun and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: 4.5, University of Luzern, language: English, abstract: With my paper, I will illustrate the economic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for the world while giving a short update on the current political situation. Nevertheless, I will keep the focus on possible consequences of Iran closing the Strait, be it on an international or Iranian level. This analysis will be carried out based on recent research. Additionally, similar situations which occurred in the past, namely the conflict between the US and Iran in 1988, which culminated in “Operation Praying Mantis”, can be used to predict the consequences of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz nowadays. Further on, I will construct two scenarios: one of further escalation and another one of de-escalation. Three indicators, that is the development of the price of Brent crude oil, numbers depicting Iranian GDP growth, and the Consumer Price Index will allow me to deliver a prognosis, on what effects each one of these scenarios might have for Iran as well as the global economy. The hypothesis, which is going to be reviewed in the conclusion of this paper, is the following: “A closure of the Strait of Hormuz would have serious consequences for the global economy.”

Book Revisiting Hormuz

Download or read book Revisiting Hormuz written by Dejanirah Couto and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2008 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume "Revisiting Hormuz", gathers the proceedings of a Conference organized in March 2007 by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, through its Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian in Paris. The year 2007, exactly five centuries after the Portuguese first landed on the island of Hormuz, seemed to the scientific coordinators Rui Manuel Loureiro and Dejanirah Couto a very appropriate moment to bring together a large group of specialists that could establish the current state of the art in field of the history of Portuguese interactions with Hormuz and the Persian Gulf region. The chronological borders of the Conference, quite naturally, were extended to the early decades of the 17th century, to include the final departure of the Portuguese from Hormuz in 1622 and subsequent developments. Although the focus of the Paris Conference was supposed to be history, in any of its political, social, economic or cultural variants, the complex nature of Portuguese interactions with Hormuz and Safavid Persia, that spanned for more than a century, and also the existence of an important monumental heritage of Portuguese origin in the Gulf area, made the presence of art historians, architects, and archaeologists desirable.

Book Iran and the Strait of Hormuz

Download or read book Iran and the Strait of Hormuz written by James M. Esquivel and published by . This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iran's rearmament program has invited an array of interpretations of its current military capability to close or interdict the Strait of Hormuz (SOH) . The fighting in the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988), drove Iran's military forces down to minimal levels of equipment while increasing institutional disorganization. Air and ground assets ended the war in the poorest condition. Iran chose to rearm these forces first. However, in 1992, the focus widened to include the rebuilding of the Navy and those military assets physically near the Strait of Hormuz. This enlarged emphasis expanded Iranian military capacity to again challenge shipping transiting the SOH. With its new naval acquisitions, Iran is an increased threat to the interests of its neighbors and the West, particularly the United States. Now, the ultimate challenge for decisionmakers and strategic planners alike lies in accurately assessing the ability of Iranian forces to attempt to and, if possible, keep the Strait of Hormuz closed.

In the mid 1980’s, Dr. Shariat together with his wife, prayed, “Lord, use us to save Iran!” His passion for Muslims stems, in part, because of the murder of his brother, Hamraz, who was arrested in Iran at the age of sixteen on a minor political charge. After two years in jail, he was executed by firing squad. God showed Hormoz the best way to respond to this tragedy was to dedicate his life to bring one million Muslims to salvation in Christ. Join Dr. Shariat on a journey out of bondage to Islam to freedom in Christ. Learn what the Bible says about Iran and why Iran is just the beginning of something big, eternal, and of historical proportion that is already happening! Book excerpt: Some officials of Iran have recently renewed threats to close or exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's threats appear to have been prompted by the likely imposition of new multilateral sanctions targeting Iran's economic lifeline - the export of oil and other energy products. In the past, Iranian leaders have made similar threats and comments when the country's oil exports have been threatened. However, as in the past, the prospect of a major disruption of maritime traffic in the Strait risks damaging Iranian interests. U.S. and allied military capabilities in the region remain formidable. This makes a prolonged outright closure of the Strait appear unlikely. Nevertheless, such threats can and do raise tensions in global energy markets and leave the United States and other global oil consumers to consider the risks of another potential conflict in the Middle East. This book examines the Iranian threats to the Strait of Hormuz and analyses the implications of some scenarios for potential U.S. or international conflict with Iran.

Download or read book War With Iran written by Geoffrey Kemp and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War With Iran: Political, Military and Economic Consequences provides readers both a history of Iran’s relationship with the West and an expert’s estimation of what the political, human and financial costs of full-scale war with Iran might be. Authors Geoffrey Kemp and John Allen Gay of the Center for the National Interest utilize their years studying and informing America’s foreign policy in the Middle East to bring to life the possible outcomes of an American military intervention in Iran. Such a decision would not only have catastrophic consequences on the Persian Gulf, but would also endanger the whole world’s delicate economy by heightening instability in an already fragile but resource-rich region. Written for anyone with an interest in the future of American foreign policy, War With Iran explores what every player has at stake in the current crisis by analyzing every tension adjacent to it; from America’s staunch support of Israel to Iran’s own dogged pursuit of a nuclear weapon. Controversial, timely and thoroughly researched, this story stands as a preliminary caution against what would be a devastating meltdown of diplomacy, for which—if peace be the goal—there is always time.

Book Iran and the Strait of Hormuz

Download or read book Iran and the Strait of Hormuz written by Rodney A. Mills and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strait of Hormuz is widely viewed as one of the most important maritime chokepoints in existence today -- certainly it is the most important in terms of the global energy system, with one fifth of the oil consumed worldwide flowing through it each day. Iran has repeatedly threatened to disrupt the flow of oil through the strait, particularly in response to an attack, with potentially dire consequences for the price of oil and the world economy. A review of detailed open-source analysis, however, indicates that Iran's ability to close the strait is not a forgone conclusion, especially in light of the extensive U.S. military presence in the region. Furthermore, closing the strait would also have severe economic consequences for Iran. So, what is Iran's ability to disrupt the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and what is the potential impact to the global energy system? Under what circumstances might Iran attempt to do this? In light of the uncertainty, why does Iran continue to make this threat? This paper shows that Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz represents an information campaign against the United States, to which we have failed to respond adequately.

Book excerpt: On the islands in the Strait of Hormuz, off the southern coast of Iran, there is a common belief that the winds can possess a person, bringing illness and disease. The existence of similar convictions in some African countries suggests that the cult may have been brought to Iran from southeast Africa through the Arab slave trade. This history is rarely spoken about but these winds and the traces they have left on the islands and their inhabitants are the touchstone for Hoda Afshar's Speak The Wind. Through her subtle and perceptive images of the extraordinary landscapes, the people and their rituals, Afshar's beautiful and complex book attempts to picture the wind and its psychic entanglements, to form a visible record of the invisible.

Book excerpt: With every passing day, the stakes grow higher in the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel. What can we expect next? That's the subject of a riveting new book from bestselling prophecy author Mark Hitchcock. Iran has repeatedly declared its intention to wipe Israel off the map. And the moment Iran becomes a nuclear threat, not only the Middle East but the whole world will be in danger. A war against Iran holds frightening implications: global economic chaos, increasing Islamic tensions, and sky-high oil prices, among other things. In Iran and Israel, Mark Hitchcock brings a strong biblical perspective to these current events, answering these questions and more: Will this put us on the road to Armageddon? What can we expect in the days to come? Will there ever be peace in the Middle East? An eye-opening survey of where things stand, and how it all ties in with Bible prophecy.
