Download or read book Pierson v Post The Hunt for the Fox written by Angela Fernandez and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1805 New York foxhunting case Pierson v. Post has long been used in American property law classrooms to introduce law students to the concept of first possession by asking how one establishes possession of a wild animal. In this book, Angela Fernandez retells the history of the famous fox case, from its origins as a squabble between two wealthy young men on the South Fork of Long Island through its appeal to the New York Supreme Court and entry into legal treatises, law school casebooks, and law journal articles, where it still occupies a central place. Fernandez argues that the dissent is best understood as an example of legal solemn foolery. Yet it has been treated by legal professionals, the lawyers of its day, and subsequent legal academics in such a serious way, demonstrating how the solemn and the silly can occupy two sides of the same coin in American legal history.

Download or read book Dracula Scholar s Annotated Edition written by Christopher David and published by Christopher David. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A labor of love, this fully annotated edition of Bram Stoker's Dracula is meant for the university level literature student. Can be used as a resource when reading Dracula or on its own. Inspired by the La Trobe University subject Gothic Literature and its Children, and initially made up of notes taken for that subject, and driven by the editor's difficulty in locating a digital annotated copy at a reasonable price. Hundreds of hours of work has gone into this edition and it is being offered at a low price to ensure that as many students as possible are able to benefit from it. Some of the most recent literary scholarly approaches to the text have been incorporated into the annotations, alongside definitive articles and interpretations. Students are offered a never before seen enriched text that both enhances the depth of reading and prepares for further scholarly investigation. Sheds light on often dismissed and neglected parts of the text and considers different scholarly approaches to interpretation, including post-colonial and gender studies. This edition also includes definitions for obscure terms, explanations of key parts of the text and important historical notes. Relying on dozens of sources, including many known to have been employed by Bram Stoker. Includes images from the British Library and other collections, to help illustrate key aspects of the text. Lavishly illustrated throughout, including over 20 original and exclusive artworks. This edition is a scholarly reference, a beautifully formatted novel and a creative piece of art. The original text of the American edition of Dracula has been carefully edited to provide the closest possible presentation of Bram Stoker's original vision. Important differences between the American and British editions are noted in the annotations and the text has been completely edited to fix spelling errors and typos, where doing so enhances, rather than diminishes, the integrity of the text. Possibly the most accurate, and faithful to the author's original intentions, edition of the Dracula text ever published. Meant for the university level student, but equally engaging for the casual reader or anybody with an interest in Dracula. Deliberately priced to allow for maximum possible accessibility. A truly enhanced edition of Dracula, and a labor of love.

Download or read book Hunting and the Ivory Tower written by Douglas Higbee and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeen hunter-scholars explore the hunting experience and question common negative stereotypes Despite the academy having a reputation for supporting broad and open inquiry in scholarship, some academics have not extended this open-minded support to colleagues' personal pursuits. A variety of scholars enjoy hunting, which has been stereotyped by some as an activity of the unsophisticated. In Hunting and the Ivory Tower, Douglas Higbee and David Bruzina present essays by seventeen hunter-scholars who explore the hunting experience and question negative assumptions about hunting made by intellectuals and academics who do not hunt. Higbee and Bruzina suspect most academics' understanding of hunting is based on brief television news reports of hunter-politicians and commercials for reality TV shows such as Duck Dynasty. The editors contend that few scholars appreciate the complexities of hunting or give much thought to its ethical, ecological, and cultural ramifications. Through this anthology they hope to start a conversation about both hunting and academia and how they relate. The contributors to this anthology are academics from a variety of disciplines, each with firsthand hunting experience. Their essays vary in style and tone from the scholarly to the personal and represent the different ways in which scholars engage with their avocation. The essays are grouped into three sections: the first focuses on the often-fraught relation between hunters and academic culture; the second section offers personal accounts of hunting by academics; and the third portrays hunting from an explicitly academic point of view, whether in terms of value theory, metaphysics, or history. Combined, these essays render hunting as a culturally rich, deeply personal, and intellectually satisfying experience worthy of further discussion. A foreword is provided by Robert DeMott, the Edwin and Ruth Kennedy Distinguished Professor at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He is a teacher, writer, critic, and internationally respected expert on novelist John Steinbeck.
